- Bill Clinton had been in office for only 5 months

- Current beltholder Marvin Sonsona was two years old
- Mike Tyson was in prison
- Nelson Mandela had just been inaugurated as President of South Africa days earlier
- O.J. Simpson was a beloved football hero and movie star
