Marvin Sonsona beats Jose Lopez by UD

Sonsona

‘Marvelous’ Marvin Sonsona bacame the youngest Filipino champion in history with a decision win over Jose Lopez moments ago at Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada capturing the WBO junior bantamweight title in just his fourteenth pro fight. Both fighters felt each other out in Round 1, but in the second stanza the taller rangier Sonsona had great success in landing hooks and uppercuts under Lopez’s attack and hurt him in the closing seconds. In Round 4 Sonsona dropped Lopez hard with a well placed hook, but the cagey Puerto Rican champion survived the round.

Haven't seen the fight, but according to people who saw it, it was a close fight. The knockdown and a point deduction from repeated low blows by Lopez secured the UD win for Sonsona. Hopefully, we'll see a video soon. I knew this wasn't going to be an easy fight for Marvin. Congratulations are in order for Marvelous Marvin Sonsona, the youngest Filipino Champion in history.

Even considering it was reportedly close, it’s amazing what Sonsona has done. He’s 19 years old and he beat a very legit, very experienced guy.

Have you seen the fight?

I have a link to the videos if you want me to email it to you. Oh and apparently, Sonsona isn’t the youngest Filipino champion in history. That honor belongs to Morris East. He beat him by two months. Doesn’t take anything away from Sonsona. He’s an amazing talent. After watching him fight, It’s obvious why Donaire Sr. wanted to help train him. He’s very similar to Nonito. Rough, but similar.

BTW

Vic Darchinyan is already calling him out for unification. How fun would that be?

Evidently, the card was such a success that Casino Rama will already be hosting his first defense (against TBA) in November.
