Video: Shane Mosley and Andre Berto with Max Kellerman

Reigning welterweight titlists Shane Mosley (WBA) and Andre Berto (WBC) will meet on January 30 in Las Vegas, live on HBO World Championship Boxing. This is one of the best matchups we're likely to see all year.

Mosley, 38, looked as good as he ever has as a welterweight in his dominant victory over Antonio Margarito one year ago. Berto, 26, is the rising star of the division, past a prospect but without that definite, arrival-announcing victory yet on his sheet. Like Mosley, Berto was at his best last January, when he beat Luis Collazo with a brilliant 12th round charge.

Here is a clip of the two of them sitting down with HBO's Max Kellerman to hype their showdown.

Interesting

Berto: I hope Mosley gets old…..
Mosley: I’ve dealt with fast people, your punk ass is in trouble
Berto: Sure you aint old?
Mosley: Yup! I’ve seen your fight with Rivera….
Berto: …

Berto-Rivera

If Shane Mosley is hoping to constantly catch Berto off balance and score flash knockdowns while losing every other moment of the fight, that’s a pretty horrible gameplan.

It was more of a “You are not untouchable” comment than, this is the gameplan comment.

Luis Collazo proved a lot more than Rivera did.

Nice

The Kellerman Pac-Cotto interview was actually good natured.
These guys look like they’re ready for a war. This is the fight event of the first half of the year so far. With the Pac-mayweather fight falling through, nothing compares to that potential clash.

with all the crap surrounding pacquiao mayweather the media attention for this fight has kinda fallen by the wayside this just got me hyped up for it, i wonder if the year layoff affects mosely probably not tho mosely always comes prepared to throw down, early prediction Mosely by empathic ko

I like this interview style...

The face-to-face nature of it really creates alot of underlying tension.

Agreed.

This format, which borrows from reality television by the way, is really successful in framing the conflict. More close-up interviews like this please!

For some reason I can’t really articulate, a feel like a session with Clottey and Pacquiao would come with a good amount of unintentional comedy. (Not that that’s a bad thing!)

by taco pal on Jan 10, 2010 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I could see that

Clottey drips with arrogance which is really rather comical and Pacquiao is, well, a little mad.

I think I was thinking more along the lines of how Pacquiao doesn’t speak English very well, while Clottey has some odd verbal mannerisms, and both have heavy accents so neither might understand what the other is saying.

it seems every year hbo, steps up their game and try and deliver an even cooler boxing experience for the fans, looks like Max has a lot to do with that, and you have to admire hbo for that, they treat boxing like royalty.Hope to see what else they have in store for the fans.

Their production values are always top-of-the-line. But their decisionmaking on selecting fights often leaves something to be desired. And sometimes their bulls*** level just gets to be unbearable. Kellerman’s especially.

by taco pal on Jan 10, 2010 2:43 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah they spend money on real shit fights sometimes, but on the other hand they get fights like Martinez Williams done, im pretty sure we’ll get too see the rematch made. Yeah Kellerman talks a lot of shit sometimes, Katsidis the second coming of Gatti Marciannon plus they gotta get rid of Lennox

by Eploos on Jan 10, 2010 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

Right. In addition to the Katsidis stuff, there are three Max-shticks that have really been getting on my nerves lately:

1. “Everyone is TERRIFIED of Paul Williams.”

True, people aren’t exactly itching to fight him, but he just exaggerates it sooooo much.

2. “The four sanctioning bodies have no legitimacy so never mind these crappy titlists, the REAL best fighters in the division are [these guys, who happen to be HBO house fighters who we’ve been trying to market]”

It’s true that the sanctioning bodies have very little legitimacy, but half the time he does this spiel, the beltholders he dismisses are better than some or all of the HBO fighters he’s talking up. Or the HBO fighters aren’t even really in the division he’s talking about.

3. His intro to the Bute-Andrade rematch was suffocatingly biased. There is a very legitimate argument that Bute was not robbed in the first fight, and Max was utterly shameless in making it sound as if it was the worst, most obvious robbery in the whole history of the sport.

i know you what mean, yeah no one is asking to fight Williams some of it is because yeah hes a real threat and he presents so many different stylistic match up problems for a lot of dudes at the lower weights but a lot of it is because the dude really has no fan base anywhere.I also agree with the second point although i feel like the titles worth is made up of the fighter who holds that title, the Pacman winning the WBO title from Cotto can be seen as pretty worthless because Miguel won it by beating Petter"who the hell is he"Jennings but Miguel imo made that title mean something, it was more than paper.I never got to see the Bute Andrade intro, but for all of Max’s faults he geniunely cares about the sport and loves the sport is passionate about it, i cant say that for everyone on tv that covers boxing Gus Johnson springs to mind and i find him much more offensive to listen to than Max.

That style of interview is very nice. It allows the fighters to comment off the other persons answer and definatly makes it more personal and builds tention
