Pacquiao-Clottey a done deal in Dallas
As expected today, the fight between Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey for March 13 has been finalized, according to all reports, including this one from Dan Rafael at ESPN.com.
The bout will be held at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas. Bob Arum attended the Cowboys-Eagles playoff game yesterday with other Top Rank officials, and was so impressed with the venue that he already started figuring out how many seats they'd get in there (50K), a possible catchweight (no catchweight), etc.
A formal press conference announcement will come later this month, likely after the Cowboys' January 17 game against the Minnesota Vikings. That game will be in Minnesota, but there's still a chance the Cowboys could host the NFC championship on January 24.
There's been no official statement from HBO, but I'm guessing this is going to be on HBO pay-per-view. One thing about that I find interesting is the continuing idea that Antonio Margarito will be featured on the undercard, and how that will come across on TV with the HBO crew calling the action.

I agree
This is as hard or may been an even harder fight than PBF, because of the size difference.

Clottey probably won't do enough to beat pacquiao

I’m guessing this is going to be on HBO pay-per-view
Rafael says du Boef has indicated that Top Rank is currently set to handle the PPV, but they’re willing to take offers. Not that Pacquiao has ever fought on Showtime or that Floyd will actually fight in March.

Yeah, that’s why I’m guessing HBO. Mayweather isn’t going to fight in March and Top Rank would be really stretching it not getting some HBO money for a show this ambitious.

On a PPV, it's just the marketing
HBO doesn’t pay extra to have their name attached to the PPVs. Other way around.

Margarito
Depending on who he fights and what happens, could this be a tryout, so to speak, for the Tornado to take on Pacquiao next? This blog has reported now that if Mosley wins (and i think he will), he’ll fight Mayweather later in the year. That takes both Mayweather and Mosley out of the picture until the fall and Pacman likes to fight. If he gets past Clottey, who else is at that weight left? If Berto wins, you could make that fight.

Timing is fine for Floyd-Pac next. Mosley-May is going to happen in May and Pac-Clottey will happen in March 13. Both should be ready to go at the end of the summer. I hope Margo is not on this card and frankly I don’t think he’ll be reinstated. However, I don’t doubt Arum’s ability to give us a worse option than Margo…..

Roach said in the past that there’s no way they’d ever fight Margarito. Too big physically. That may have changed, but Freddie has also said that Margarito should be banned for life. Margarito may also be coming back at 154 pounds. I mean loaded gloves being their own giant issue, Margarito did have trouble making weight for Mosley, and it was well-publicized.

Pac won't fight again until the fall
Elections are mid-May. He wouldn’t even schedule another fight until after he knows whether he won.

Boys, I’ll be there for sure. I’ll work on hosting a party at a nearby hotel, as I sure ain’t driving home from a crowd of 100,000 like the Cowboys fans.

more like 50,000 but I think we get the point. Sounds cool!

Well, I said I’d stop believing this was all a ruse when press conferences and the like were scheduled. So, bleh.
It’s a good fight. I’ll watch.

Interesting style match-up. Clottey is quite a bit stronger than Cotto and a good deal more durable. But he’s not as good a boxer and has a less potent offense. Would I be surprised if Manny somehow makes this look easy? Not really. His speed is such that slow fighters tend not to get much going against him(JMM being the exception. But I also don’t think he’s as slow as some people have made him out to be. Slow of foot maybe…). On the other hand, would I be surprised if Clottey manages to impose his considerable mass on Manny? Nope. I think the natural strength difference in this fight is huge. Perhaps the most telling stat is height and reach. Clottey, 5’8" with a 70" reach. He might be a “huge” welter in terms of mass but not height and reach. Which is probably why Manny’s camp preferred him over Yuri. I think camp Pacquiao is of the mind that anyone Manny can hit consistently, Manny can beat. Early prediction: Manny UD.

Pac v Clottey
I, for one, am not excited by this bout at all. In fact, I feel (perhaps unjustly) that Arum is ramming this down our throat. He sure won’t get my PPV for this one. Don’t get me wrong, I think Clottey is an outstanding fighter, but with PAC being (supposedly) P4P, we (the fans) deserve better.
Didn’t F. Roach say sometime ago that Manny has maybe “one or two” fights left? Is THIS the kind of competition we want to see him against IF it’s his last or next to last fight?
Man, for 40 Fuckin’ Million dollars (or thereabouts), the fight should have been made and we shouldn’t have to settle for Clottey.
IMO, Arum, Manny and Money (and all others concerned) should be ashamed of themselves. Shit, I’ll bet most all of the viewers of this site would fight King Kong for a fraction of that. Plus, Boxing gets yet another (and very well deserved) Black Eye.
Dana White must be feeling good.

Ugh
Is THIS the kind of competition we want to see him against IF it’s his last or next to last fight?
Yes. This is remarkably challenging fight for Pacquiao who is, realistically, no where near being a natrual welterweight and will have to overcome considerable strength, a tricky style and a damn good defense if he is to win.
This is arguably his hardest fight yet and while I get it that you are upset that the Mayweather fight isn’t happening (yet), you should still be happy that Pacquiao is taking on such considerable challenges.

I think he’s a natural junior welterweight at this point, so he is somewhere near being a natural welterweight. But otherwise I agree.

They have to feed him 5 times a day to make him reach 144
I’m not sure what his natrual fighting weight is to be honest but I don’t think it’s very near 147. I would actually be very interested to know his walking around weight. Any guesses?

But he came in at 144 in his last fight at 130.

I didn't know that
I still don’t think he is more like 140 or 135. Not that it really matters seeing as he destroys in pretty much any division under 154!

Ugh
“remarkably challenging”? I truly hope you are correct. I see your point about the weight issue and agree that Pac is taking on a “considerable challenge”…..However, I can also foresee (and hopefully I’m wrong) Clottey being way too slow and fighting his usual (in championship bouts) “just enough to loose” performances. I’ll try to keep a “glass half-full” attitude about this, but I can’t help but feel that this will be relatively one-sided.
by Wansen on Jan 11, 2010 4:48 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
If it’s one-sided (which could happen, though I don’t think it’ll be that bad), then that will only be because Pacquiao is that good, not because Clottey is unworthy. Clottey is a more-than-credible opponent.
by taco pal on Jan 11, 2010 5:29 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Clottey may be a bit slow
but I think that if he uses the jab he can do good things early. I agree that he is probably going to be outworked due to not doing nearly enough in the later rounds.

Early prediction
Manny Close SD. Clottey is very annoyed and Mayweather says “everyone thinks Clottey won anyway”.

Pacquiao vs Clottey Fight
Well for Manny Pacquiao it’s time to move on the drug testing issues will not make the fight happen between Pacquiao and mayweather. I think mayweather is just using the drug testing issue for not fighting pacquiao this so early. I think he’s reserving it for he’s last and final fight before he actaully retire. Now back to pacquiao vs clottey i think it is a good match why? It’s better than the loud mouth malignaggi who is totally mismatch for pacquiao. Though Bradly and Foreman was also a great idea but clottey is a perfect match up for pacquiao. Well wait for the next announcement between pacquiao and clottey match up in coming more days. Thank you!
