Right now I can find basically every Japanese channel there is besides TV Tokyo, which I can only find on KeyHole, which sucks for boxing.

Poonsawat-Hosono underway

I’m watching, but the quality isn’t much. I’ll just update with round scores or major happenings in the fight.

I fell behind just watching. Pretty tight fight so far. They could have held this in a phone booth.

Felt like Hosono was able to muscle him somewhat early, but now Poonsawat is holding his ground and starting to land some really solid shots.

Hell of a round, really kicked up near the end. Poonsawat up 48-47 through five on my card.

R6: Poonsawat 10-9

Poonsawat is starting to move and groove a bit more and at moments outclassing Hosono a hair. It’s definitely Hosono starting to show the effects of a rough, very active first five rounds. Hosono needs to get himself back in this and fast.

Alright, have a far better stream now, but it’s also way ahead of where I was, so I’m going to cash in my chips on the Poon-Hosono fight and wait to call the Salgado fight proper. This is in the tenth and I don’t know how the fight went in rounds 7-9, but Hosono is definitely looking the worst for wear and is being backed down by Poonsawat whenever the titlist brings the fight to him.

I think the TV card has Poon up 96-94, but I can’t tell.

Man, stamina’s no issue for these guys. It’s the 11th round and they’re both landing good shots (Poon landing more) and both staying very, very active, and neither has really so much as wobbled. Both of these guys have perfectly strong KO rates too so we’re not talking about feather-fisted dudes.

What I have seen of this has been a pretty damn good, competitive fight.

Salgado-Uchiyama R1

Salgado staying at distance to start, making Uchiyama reach for him, but then Uchiyama sends Salgado back into the corner, more of a shove than anything though. Right to the body by Uchiyama. Salgado shoots in looking for an uppercut. Uchiyama is using a pretty tight guard to keep Salgado’s lunges from scoring effectively to start.

Pretty solid opening round for the challenger.

Uchiyama 10-9

Salgado-Uchiyama R2

Uchiyama shoots with a BIG right. Salgado looks very, very normal in there so far, and he looks sloppy trying to box from a distance. He’s not comfortable in close with Uchiyama, and not effective from the outside. He’s landing a few potshots now and again, but it’s clear that Uchiyama is controlling how this fight moves. BIG LEFT HOOK by Uchiyama! Salgado backs off slowly, and might not be as hurt as it appeared at first. Salgado with a right that clips Uchiyama! Spirited finish to this round.

Salgado-Uchiyama R3

Uchiyama trying to trap Salgado in the corners early in the third, or at least keep him on the ropes. Salgado’s defense is extremely loose and he’s leaving himself absolutely wide open. And he’s getting hit too. Salgado is almost leaving his feet on some of these surges into action, but he’s not landing punches. Salgado is wild, starting to look desperate offensively, and defensively, just there to be hit all the time. A faster guy probably would’ve put him on the mat by now.

JCS starting to land to the body a little bit near the end of the round.

Salgado-Uchiyama R4

Salgado starting to rattle Uchiyama just a little bit halfway into the round, partially because he’s getting a little rough with him. It might be his best idea. BIG right by Uchiyama! Salgado firing back, not hurt. Salgado can take a shot, which we’re finding out. He’s eaten two or three in this fight that should have been wobblers but he took them quite well and stayed very calm even if he was shaken a little.

Uchiyama loads up a ridiculous right hand and misses badly. He might let himself get trapped in a gameplan where he looks for one shot, and Salgado is trying to throw in combination now.

Closest round of the fight.

Uchiyama 10-9
Uchiyama 40-36

Replay shows that the big right landed behind the ear.

Salgado-Uchiyama R5

This is getting some powder keg elements to it, it feels like. Salgado has to know he’s behind, and probably behind 4-0. It seems like if he’s patient he should be able to time Uchiyama, but now Uchiyama times him with a left hook counter. Uchiyama loads up and lands again with the right hand, and he’s just plain winning the war of the little things. Tactically, he’s much better than Salgado, more technically sound, and I think he might be a bit stronger than him too. Salgado has rarely pushed the action effectively in this fight, maybe twice so far.

This is getting close to a point of no return for Salgado here in his first defense. As quickly as glory comes in boxing…

Uchiyama 10-9

Salgado-Uchiyama R6

Salgado is so consistently countered and so rarely lands a good, clean shot of his own. I don’t know if we’re seeing how good Uchiyama is or how big of a fluke Salgado over Linares was. Right now I’d guess a bit of both, but Salgado always has his power if he can find Uchiyama at any point.

But instead he’s just countered hard twice more, then popped to the body. Salgado is getting reckless and desperate, or should that be desperate, then reckless? He’s being beaten soundly by a better boxer.

Every moment it almost breaks loose, Uchiyama expertly settles it down. In terms of his ring generalship and savvy, he’s been very impressive.

Salgado-Uchiyama R7

Salgado trying to box more this round. Probably the last thing he should be trying. But his constantly motion around the ropes has him landing some potshots, so there’s that. Uchiyama can’t cut him off, and can’t really land much as a result.

I guess this was a Salgado round.

Salgado-Uchiyama R8

I mean, we’re clearly cruising to an Uchiyama title win, aren’t we? That’s obvious, isn’t it? Salgado might have won the last round. I might have given it to him out of pity, too.

Uchiyama goes back to cutting off Salgado at every turn, landing some big shots in the final minute of the round, and dominating the fight again. I don’t mean to downplay what is a very fine performance from Uchiyama, but Juan Carlos Salgado looks like absolutely nothing special at all. He never should have gotten a title shot, never should have won it, and now Uchiyama is reaping the rewards against a weak titleholder.

Salgado-Uchiyama R9

The biggest event this round is Uchiyama going to the corner to get his glove re-taped. This is a really one-sided fight at this point, and while I’m not bored, there’s no intrigue. Salgado is out of his depth, Uchiyama is dominant, and at the end of it, you know what we get? The WBA title essentially held hostage in Japan by a fighter who isn’t going to travel with the belt. Woo hoo.

Salgado-Uchiyama R10

Salgado really isn’t showing much gumption here. Hell he was more reckless earlier in the fight than he is now. Continually getting tagged with big right hands is probably a deterrent, though, and I should consider that.

Toward the end of the round Salgado actually kicks it up, and I think he sneaks out another round.

Salgado-Uchiyama R11

I did speak too soon on Salgado trying to win this fight. He’s now throwing just about everything he’s got and starting to make a stand. Uchiyama lands some heavy stuff at the end of the round and it looks like Salgado could tip at any moment! The bell may have saved him.

Salgado-Uchiyama R12

Uchiyama really swinging for the knockout with a bit over a minute left in this round. He’s actually got Salgado — who needs a KO — on the retreat. Sometimes the best defense is a good offense and DOWN GOES SALGADO!!!

He’s up at eight but on Dream Street. Uchiyama charges! HE’S UNLOADING! SALGADO IS OUT ON HIS FEET AND IT IS OVER WITH UNDER 20 SECONDS LEFT! WHAT A FINISH!

TAKASHI UCHIYAMA, I LOVE YOU
