For those of you who were hoping for a solid undercard for Pacquiao-Clottey, prepare to be disappointed. Most of this has been reported or speculated here already, but this confirms Bob Arum's plans for the undercard. If he is off suspension, the co-feature would be Antonio Margarito against Carson Jones, who recently exposed Tyrone Brunson. Alfonso Gomez would take on Jose Luis Castillo. The fourth bout would be a showcase for Dallas prospect Robert Marroquin.

Not bad for a boxing undercard IMO.

Clearly, something Boxing is yet to adapt to

MMA has nearly made itself a rival to Boxing’s combat sports crown by loading up events with worthwhile cards. Sure, part of this is due to the limited length of MMA matches, but regardless of the motivations of the origins, its something that really pleases fans and makes people less uncomfortable about spending $50+ on an event.

It would really be nice to see a worthwhile co main event one day.

There have been plenty of cards that were stacked top to bottom

In fact, that used to be Don King’s modus operandi. That’s just not Bob Arum’s way of doing things. Consensus, after years of experimentation with this kind of stuff, is that the cost of a good undercard is higher than the additional revenue brought in by having a strong undercard.

That said, there have been times when promoters have tried to have good undercards. Mayweather-Marquez had an awesome undercard on paper. It just didn’t turn out to be as good in reality.

Margarito should not be getting his next fight televised…..he doesn’t deserve it

I thought Soto vs. David Diaz was supposed to be on this card?

Boycotting Margarito

When this fight gets closer, expect posts discouraging hardcore fans from dropping any coin on this. Normally I would be delighted to buy a PPV event featuring Pacquiao vs. Clottey, but I will never ever support any boxing enterprise that promotes Margarito.

That is the big problem I have

I love Josh Clottey I think Pacq-Clottey will be very good Id be more than willing to pay for that fight but I have a real issue “supporting” a card with Margarito on it (so soon after his suspension)

Cotto

You guys need to be rooting for Margarito! The sooner he gets back in the ring the sooner Cotto gets to redeem his first loss by taking Margarito out when his hands aren’t filled with plaster.

naa – I don’t care if Margarito gets beat by Cotto in a rematch, I don’t want Marg to make any more money on a legacy of 100% pure bullshit. It’s the old “I’ll let Mike Tyson kick my ass for a million dollars” line. Who cares if he fights and loses, I don’t want him to fight because win or lose, he wins money.

Cotto will not rematch Margarito

This is what he has said several times and I have no reason not to beleive him.

Any concrete news on this 144 pound catchweight rumour?

by Falstaff on Jan 11, 2010 1:34 PM EST reply actions

No, and I'm not reporting it because I don't think Koncz is a reliable source

Arum and Roach have said no catchweight. Bloodsucking leech Koncz has said 144 pound catchweight. Arum and Roach make these decisions, not Koncz. Until I hear something from one of them (or Pacquiao himself), no need to put up an alarming post that’s probably based on BS.

And if it is at 144

I’ll lose a lot of respect for this fight. 145 for Cotto I honestly thought had no effect on the fight. It was a pound, and Cotto’s smallish for a welterweight anyway. No way Clottey can make it down to 144 in a healthy manner though.

Agreed. 144 would kill this fight’s legitimacy. Heck, any catchweight would. But I don’t think even Arum would be brazen enough to insist on one.

by Falstaff on Jan 11, 2010 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

I doubt those rumors too. The promoter is closer to the terms of the fight than the manager is. The manager is the fighter’s go-between to the promoter, not to the other side.

Arum has, of course, been known to speak untruths, but generally, when he does, he has a motive for it and you can tell he’s just BS’ing.

Koncz has retracted his statement about the catchweight

Everyone’s on the same page now. No catchweight.

I am still in disbelief that that ass hat Margarito didn’t get banned for life from boxing- in the US at least.

Ricky Hatton came closer to beating Manny Pacquiao than Marquez did to beating Floyd.

The punishment was handed down when they didn’t know if it was plaster. I think the logic was we’ll figure out all what’s going on and see what’s actually happening then dole out the punishment. Hopefully that’s true, but the way this year is going they’ll let him back in and the WBC will instantly give him a belt….

by Waldo Rastel on Jan 11, 2010 1:48 PM EST up reply actions

The longest suspension California has is “indefinite,” which means in a year you can ask for your license back. It doesn’t mean he’s going to get it, either.

It's not worse than a typical Top Rank undercard

It just follows the same formula all of their undercards do. One bigger name fighter who targets a specific demographic in a gimme fight. One solid fight between two guys who aren’t big names and aren’t that good. One fight showcasing a prospect.

Considering he’s still probably jockeying for leverage for a Mayweather fight eventually (i.e., if Pac’s PPV does well and Floyd’s tanks, then he could come back with a lot more leverage to get the fight made and possibly even change some of the terms in Pac’s favor), I’m a bit surprised he didn’t try to stack the undercard more than this.

I hate the way Arum leeches out of the Hispanic fans with Mexicans fighting cans because he knows they can draw in a certain number. Frankly, Margarito has as little place on this undercard as Chavez-Rowland had on November 14th. Really hoping this PPV bombs, because I’m starting to really dislike the way Bob Arum operates.

I think having Margarito on the undercard

May well backfire on arum and drive away a lot of potential buyers, especailly amongst the Hispanic fans.

I have to boycott and not buy nor support the broadcast if they put Margarito on there. Period. Other fans of the sport, anyone who says they love boxing should do the same. There is no other response. The sport is dangerous enough without…..don’t even get me started. Margarito should be banned for life. Period.
