Pacquiao-Clottey picked up by HBO PPV
The final nail in the coffin for any possible Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight on March 13 arrived earlier today when HBO announced on their boxing Facebook page that they'd picked up the Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey fight. This indicates that Mayweather's next fight -- likely with Shane Mosley -- will be on May 1 or another date, but certainly not on March 13.
Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KO) will defend his WBO welterweight title against Clottey (35-3, 20 KO), who once briefly held the IBF welterweight belt. No word if the WBC "Diamond Championship" that Pacquiao won against Miguel Cotto will be on the line, but if the WBC can get their grubby hands on some of the money from this fight, I'm sure it'll happen.
No undercard has been officially announced yet, but two fights have been discussed. Former "Contender" star Alfonso Gomez would meet ex-lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo, and Antonio Margarito would return to action at junior middleweight against 23-year-old Carson Jones (23-7-1, 15 KO).
The first official press conference for the fight was held today at Cowboys Stadium. Michael Buffer called it "the most amazing press conference I've seen in 28 years."

Subject to getting his suspension revoked
We should find out in mid-February.
The other rumor I’ve heard is Saul Alvarez getting signed to Top Rank and getting a co-feature spot on the undercard.

I'm gonna skip this one as well...
Unless they improve the undercard I’m not paying $54.95 or however much to watch Pac fight somebody who lost to Cotto. Pac already beat Cotto. This fight wouldn’t be happening if Arum could get along with other promoters and didn’t have to turn to his own fighters to try and throw some crap together.
This will be a fine fight to watch on reg. HBO in HD on March 20th.
Obviously Pac is the favorite here but the logic that A > B, B > C therefore A > C doesn’t always apply to boxing. Styles make fights and all that jazz. Take Ali, Foreman, Frazier. Frazier beat Ali, Foreman beat Frazier, Ali beat Foreman.
I wish Mayweather vs Pac woulda happened too but I’d hate to miss the upset of the decade if it happens.

Cotto beat Mosley, Margarito beat Cotto, Mosley beat Margarito
You’re right that boxing matsh rarely works. It’s a shame Arum couldn’t have put Valero-Demarco on the undercard, that would have been excellent.

Cotto beat Clottey with a huge cut for basically the whole fight.
His best win is against Zab Judah. He’s not an elite fighter. He’s a decent opponent, but it’s not worthy of a PPV. I put Clottey with Collazo; good, tough opponents who haven’t been able to beat the top guys in the welterweight division.
The problem is, we just don't know
There are elites in the weight class, but only a few second tier guys, and then a big drop off. He convincingly beat one of the few second-tier guys out there in Zab Judah.
He lost close to two of the elites in Cotto and Margarito, and a lot of folks still argue that Clottey beat Cotto (though I’m not one of them. A number of other fighters (including Juan Manuel Marquez) have gotten a ton of credit for close losses, so why not Clottey?
And he’s whooped all the guys he’s supposed to beat. He’s beaten some solid third-tier guys in Shamone Alvarez, Jose Luis Cruz and Chico Corrales.
If he had some more guys from the top of the third tier or the second tier on his resume (i.e., Kermit Cintron, Isaac Hlatswayo, Carlos Quintana, Delvin Rodriguez, etc.), he’d probably get more credit. There’s no doubt in my mind that he’d beat all of those guys though.
You’re right that he’s there with Collazo. His resume is a bit better than Collazo’s though, and Clottey’s never been blown out like Collazo was against Mosley. I remember Clottey and Collazo were supposed to fight each other in a title eliminator a few years ago, but they both turned down the fight after the purse bid came in really low. I really wish that fight had happened, as it probably would have helped clarify things a bit with that second tier.

And I'm not buying it until Mayweather doesn't have to pay taxes.

Marg is on the card, so I’m boycotting.

The diamond belt was promoted as a catchweight title, so it should depend on what weight the fight takes place at.
Which will hopefully be 147
So far that seems to be the case which is good as far as I’m concerned. I’m not a big hater of catch weights I just doin’t think one would be neccessary here and that it would partially belittle the significance of the fight.

It wasn’t a catchweight title, it was a “super fight” title. It was a title for the WBC to stick into fights they wanted money from but had no belt to offer.

Eh
Somewhere in the middle. I can’t find the original press release now (the WBC’s website stinks), but according to this article, it’s “an honorary championship exclusively for fights between elite boxers” that would have a focus on catch weight fights.
But I’m sure the WBC will just make up the rules as they go along with that belt. They usually do.

tbh this isnt a bad matchup but i have no real interest in it. i just have no faith that clottey will actually continue to fight in the latter half of any of his big fights. i also think clottey is a solid fighter and a tough sob, but too slow, not mobile enuf, not high enuf workrate and doesn’t hit hard enuf to pose and real danger to manny. i may change my mind closer to the date but as of now i will not be buying this.
factors that may get me to change my mind, margarito doesnt get reinstated therefor not included in the undercard. bob/hbo make this card as a whole worth buying not just a main event fight.
bob/hbo make this card as a whole worth buying not just a main event fight.
Arum has no intention of doing anything actually interesting on the undercard and HBO can give lip service to caring about the undercard, but they don’t. Expect it to be usual Top Rank garbage.

He's wear whatever jersey they ask him to
No Texans jersey yet, but I’ve seen him in NY Giants, SF Giants, NY Yankees, Cowboys, Lakers and Spurs uniforms at one time or another.

How many times has a fighter coming off a loss...
…gotten an immediate fight with the #1 pound for pound boxer? I’m not saying Clottey couldn’t pull the upset. I know the triangle theory doesn’t work out in boxing. I’m saying Clottey doesn’t deserve this shot at Pac. The only reason it’s happening is because he’s with Top Rank too. And that doesn’t seem completely fair to me.
It happens
Zab Judah was coming off a loss when he faced Mayweather. So was DeMarcus Corley. De la Hoya was coming off an official loss and an unofficial one when he got Hopkins.
Outside of Mayweather, Mosley and Berto (who were tied up or not viable options for various reasons), who exactly would have been a better legitimate option for Pacquiao to fight than Clottey? The only other two options I can think of are Paul Williams (which wasn’t gonna happen for a whole host of reasons) and Timothy Bradley (who’s probably even less well known than Clottey), and arguably Marquez (who was also coming off a loss).

There was also nobody else to fight and he wanted to fight.

this is going to be friggin brutal to watch. gomez is just not really that good and very boring and castillo is about 4 years into being completely shot.
ill also be pretty amazed (and pissed off) if plaster fists gets to fight in the states EVER again, let alone in march.

Too
many PPV’s. Will only get worse I guess.
Well this was always going to be on PPV. It was going to be Top Rank-produced, now it’ll be HBO-produced and might get a 24/7 (though I doubt it).
