Brave selection I know. However, I’ll oppose anyone that loses to Chris Edwards

Are you American,if you don’t mind me asking? It’s just that you don’t usually find American writers covering UK or worldwide fights like you do.
Good on ye.
Although i can’t say i’m very excited about tonights Sky bill.
Napa will be doing his Mayweather impersonations(he’s got the shoulder roll down to a tee!) but punching with relative feather fists. Some like him.I’m not a big fan,but at least there’s some boxing on the box:).

by Matt Mosley on Jan 22, 2010 4:49 PM EST reply actions

I am American. I love watching international fights. I like to see how different crowds react to different styles and things like that. Boxing’s fanbases are so varied all around the world, plus there are a lot of great fights out there that aren’t going to get American TV coverage. This show isn’t exactly exciting, but you just never know.

Napa-McDonnell R1

Napa doing his usual as he starts off by shoulder rolling around the ring. McDonnell trying to stay at range and establish a jab, but Napa is a bit too slick so far. “Napa a defensive genius,” says Adam Smith, and I think “genius” is probably overstating it, but I suppose compared to McDonnell…

Napa gets inside and starts digging at the body. “McDonnell looking good and positive,” says Jim Watt, and I instinctively roll my eyes. Sneaky little right by McDonnell after they spin out of a tie-up. McDonnell has a small cut near his left eye. Clash of heads apparently.

Not much in the first round, as you’d likely expect.

Napa-McDonnell R2

Left hook by Napa. Quick right by Napa in counter. Napa starting this round a bit aggressively. Napa trying to get to the body, and McDonnell winds up backing him off with shots of his own. Right hand from McDonnell grazes Napa. Napa is getting himself in some bad spots when he comes in. I think McDonnell might just be a bit quicker than Napa expected, and Jamie has a pretty solid gameplan early on.

Napa holding McDonnell behind the head and throwing rights to the body, but nothing substantial gets past the arm. McDonnell is moving a lot, keeping Napa either at range or so far away he can’t do much. But Napa took this round with some good early work. McDonnell did some nice stuff adjusting in the second part of the round, but didn’t do much offensively.

Napa this time

His defense is ok I guess…

McDonnell threw quite a few jabs in the last 30 secs and it worked, he should do it more.

Napa-McDonnell R3

One thing McDonnell is doing very well is making Napa uncomfortable. Napa gets in close and McDonnell is hitting him, which he does not expect. Napa’s looking awfully off-balance early int his round. “Here comes Napa. Positive!” Jesus Christ. Positive/negative has made these guys even lazier than they used to be. They can just go “Positive!” instead of really talking about anything.

Napa trying to throw inside, and Smith says, “Head and body! Accuracy! Clean shots!” There was really nothing clean in there. Napa is throwing a lot more, and then Watt says Napa is digging in “some vicious-looking punches.” The man has won 19 fights and one of them was inside the distance. He does not have a vicious punch. “Hurtful,” says Smith.

This commentary is God awful. They’re refusing to acknowledge that Napa can’t punch. He can’t punch!

But this was a good round for Napa just on aggression. And that cut is getting worse.

Another one for Napa

One funny moment was when he missed completely to the head and the commentator shouted “Accurate, clean punches from Napa!”.

Napa-McDonnell R4

Now it’s starting to look like Napa has seized control of the fight tactically, and the cut is helping. McDonnell is looking a bit more tentative and not as quick to throw when Napa comes in on him. Those little rights that Napa shoots in can really do some damage to that cut, and Jamie knows that.

But without aggression, McDonnell is not going to win this fight, and Napa is clearly taking over now.

Adam Smith

reminds me of the nerd at school who probably reads up on boxing but really lacks the knowledge to be a tv commentator.I can tell for a fact he’s never been in a boxing ring. Not that that is essential but i’m afraid Smith is just a but of a gimp.

by Matt Mosley on Jan 22, 2010 5:27 PM EST reply actions

I think that is a bit unfair

Watt talks more sh*te in my opinion and he obviously has been in the ring. Sky’s biggest problem is having Watt as the co-commentator, sometimes his scorecards are borderline ridiculous. I quite like John Rawling

Bunce is just like a tabloid newspaper, imo. All hype and bluster but if he gets asked an awkward question about one of his favourite boxer/mates,he skirts around it and spouts a load of meaningnless crap.He used to do it regularly on his Setanta show and i’ve read him doing this in interviews on boxing website. He’s a phony,Bunce is,imo.

by LtfcPete on Jan 22, 2010 6:03 PM EST up reply actions

Not a different thing entirely.I said ‘maybe’ he is a fraud. My personal opinion is that he will change his opinions if it suits his personal gain, whether through gaining popularity with certain people or gainig favour with promoters, fighters, etc.IMO,that does make him a fraud. Not a serious fraud but a fraud non the less.
Yes,i would say a jingoistic fraud.Just my opinion of course.

Napa-McDonnell R5

McDonnell is looking like he’s starting to tire. Napa can’t punch, but he does have very good stamina and he’s cut this fight at a pretty crisp pace. The body shots may not be powerful, but they’re getting in there and taking some breath from McDonnell. Napa is proving himself in a different class now. Still, if you stuck Napa in with a top 20 bantamweight, eh.

McDonnell’s just out of rhythm entirely. Napa is just a lot more seasoned, well-conditioned, and smarter. He’s dominating now.

McDonnell getting aggressive again this round, sticking Napa on the ropes again. But then Napa starts taking over once more. Napa back on the ropes again, seemingly playing possum a bit, making McDonnell throw and mostly miss. Napa kind of took this round off, it seemed to me.

Napa-McDonnell R7

This round looks a lot like the last one. There’s not much attention being paid to the fact that McDonnell is doing much better than he was in the second through fifth rounds. Napa digs in some good body work, but McDonnell is really picking shots upstairs. “And again combination,” says Smith. Neither punch landed. Neither. They’re just assuming every punch he throws lands.

There’s a decent shot from Napa that doesn’t budge McDonnell a hair. Napa takes this round with a late charge.

Napa-McDonnell R9

This is far from a bad fight. In fact, it’s been quite enjoyable as a tactical affair, and the Napa-loving commentary has entertained me greatly anyway. But it’s also interesting watching McDonnell try everything he can, and now starting to get caught really flush. If Napa even had the power of Paulie Malignaggi or someone (relative to weight, obviously) he’d probably have buckled McDonnell, but McDonnell has to realize this guy can’t knock him out. He really doesn’t have a lot to lose by just going for it, but then there’s the fact that Napa (relative to quality of opposition) is pretty damn slick, too. Still, he’s been there to get hit more than enough, and there’s nothing about this performance — which is apparently just great — that leads me to believe Napa will ever have a shot on the world stage at 118.

McDonnell is still in this fight in his mind, and honestly if a judge (unlikely) gave him an extra round or two, this might be up for grabs. McDonnell is not letting Napa breathe anymore. He’s leaning on him, throwing his hands, trying to make this a pure brawl. Napa is just trying to not get hit, and he does land a few counter shots to keep McDonnell as honest as a Napa punch can keep an opponent.

McDonnell keeps warring on, and Napa is trying to meet him here and there, but it’s not his fight at all and it’s showing in the first half of the round again. McDonnell has made this one hell of a fun fight. This is a real sleeper entertainer. McDonnell lands some good, clean shots. All credit to Napa, too: He’s taken clean shots himself.

About 30 seconds left. McDonnell sure needs a KO. Napa firing back off the ropes, but McDonnell won’t let him actually get off of there. Now he does, taking it to center ring with 20 left. McDonnell with some combination shots that land. Napa and McDonnell are both worn out. Napa landing good shots! McDonnell landing good shots!

Hell of a fight. McDonnell thinks he won, apparently. I’m pretty sure he’s wrong, but this fight was closer than Watt and Smith made it out.
