Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

At Dan Rafael's ESPN blog, people inside boxing react to the news that Antonio Margarito is likely to be licensed by the morally bankrupt Texas State Athletic Commission. It's not positive.

Well,

I’m just thankful that I had no use for Texas to begin with.

I suppose I'm cast as the darkness, because I comprehended their light not at all; at least not in the way they wanted me to.

I like Austin.

And I was only using hyperbole. I’m not foolish enough to think an entire state is anything except a bunch of wildly different people. No offense meant. Just talkin’ junk about a state that (sort of) spawned Dubyah.

I like Austin too. reminds me of Minneapolis (where I’m from), with good food and no winter…so it’s like Minneapolis ‘cuz there’s music I guess.

I’m from the UK so i don’t know that much about how some states in America differ from others. The impression i get of Texas is that it is a very pro Republican, hardline state though. Can someone elaborate and let me know more?

It has nothing to do with the state itself. It’s that their athletic commission has zero credibility left. Like I said yesterday, this is the commission that:

1. Licensed HIV-positive Tommy Morrison to fight
2. Re-licensed Evander Holyfield after he was banned by the state of New York
3. Gave Edwin Valero a license even though a competent commission like Nevada’s will not due to real medical concerns

Add this Margarito crap, and you’ve got a clear case of a commission that does not have any interest in doing the right things.

Don't Forget

the ridiculous scoring in the Diaz v Malignaggi fight by the Texan Gale Van Hoy OR the fact that the ref was the son of the commisioner.

by Matt Mosley on Jan 22, 2010 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

The incompetent referee who has proven his incompetence on several occasions. Laurence Cole is a horrendous referee. He got himself suspended once, in the Juan Manuel Marquez v. Jimrex Jaca fight. Marquez had a bad cut caused by an accidental butt, and Cole took him aside and told him he was ahead on the cards and could stop the fight if he wanted to.

heh

as god awful as this sounds i don’t pay any attention to politics, but when i heard that Rick Perry pretty much covered up that innocent dude’s execution (the guy who allegedly burned down his home with his wife+kids still in it) i suddenly got the urge to vote. too bad that we’re so stupidly conservative that we’ll vote for anyone with an® next to their name

yea – we love the old magic needle here and as Family Guy stated “You’re retarded? In TX, we execute the retarded”.

I’m supporting the female in this upcoming one, lesser of two evils. But I would like to see the Feds call Perry’s bluff on the secession shit. They burned and raped Atlanta last time, I think they still know where the matches are.

Just another reason why Arum got upset when

Mayweather didn’t want the fight in Texas. Watch Arum’s actions he always has motive with what he says, does, and acts. I can just imagine that Arum pushed Manny to thinking Mayweather was bullying him. Well Arum might get what he wanted…. margs on Manny’s undercard.

This will setup Manny vs Margarito so Arum can try and put more money in his pocket.

Manny v Margs

will be a joke fight when there is Mayweather still out there.Ridiculous!!!!….Will it happen??…I wouldn’t bet against it.:).

by Matt Mosley on Jan 22, 2010 4:52 PM EST up reply actions

Arum is risking PPV buys. With the posabilaty of a Mayweather fight in the not to distant future (if Manny an Floyd win), Manny wants to keep his PPV buys high. Floyd has more time to advertise and promote, plus people will pay to watch if they think he will lose. Add in the fact you have people suspecting Manny to be on PED’s and Marg is a cheat, the Mayweather-Mosley fight will sell way more. Floyd will want the bigger cut since he is now the bigger draw and you have an instant road block.

I'm Incensed

that Margo’s gonna get licensed.:).

by Matt Mosley on Jan 22, 2010 7:04 PM EST reply actions

Agreed Matt...

This is downright criminal. Margarito deserves a lifetime ban from boxing as not only did he cheat, he also put at least one life at risk.

Another reason for people to bash the sport we all love.

This guy should be banned from fighting in the US. Let him fight in Mexico. It is bile -provoking
