Mosley-Mayweather announcement is coming

Months after the two of them got together in the ring for a semi-staged-feeling argument that had Max Kellerman making bug eyes, it looks like my prediction that this would be next for Floyd is coming true. Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports says that an official announcement for a May 1 fight between Shane Mosley and Floyd Mayweather Jr. is imminent.

Iole learned from Golden Boy's Richard Schaefer that all the details are ironed out and now we just play the waiting game to make it the real deal. Schaefer says that he hopes to have an announcement in the next few days. Richard's history is such that when he says that, you can expect something very quickly. I wouldn't doubt that tomorrow we'll know 100% for sure.

Mosley, who has admitted to taking EPO and "The Cream" and "The Clear" for a 2003 fight with Oscar de la Hoya, has agreed to Olympic-level blood testing, which ended the negotiations between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao a short while ago. Mosley said during all of that that he'd take whatever tests anyone wanted, as he positioned himself wisely to fill in for Pacquiao should that fight fall apart. When his January 30 bout with Andre Berto was canceled, it gave him even more leverage.

This was a no-brainer. Both are working with Golden Boy, both want the big paydays. This is the biggest fight there is in the welterweight division outside of Pacquiao-Mayweather. Mosley-Mayweather has been a fight on the minds of the boxing public for 10 years now, and while you can say it's happening too late, they're still two of the very best fighters on the planet, and present unique challenges for one another that nobody else really brings.

Honestly, I hate that Floyd-Manny went down the drain (for now) as much as anyone does, but you couldn't really ask for better "replacement" fights than Mosley-Mayweather and Pacquiao-Clottey.

Mosley and Mayweather will meet at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

I wouldn't put Pac-Clottey in the same category as this fight.

Clottey is going to fade like an old pair of jeans. Are they even getting a 24/7?

Every fighter has a game plan until he get's punched in the mouth.

They didn’t have time to put together a 24/7 and get production and all that. They’re doing a special preview show on March 6, though, like the old “Countdown To:” shows called “Road to Dallas.”

They should have just done it as a “Countdown” show. I really liked that intro music.

This is going to be a great fight

I think Mosley has a better chance of betting Mayweather than Manny but Im putting my money on mayweather

Really glad to see Shane get a big late-career payday like this.

i am real excited for this matchup … been wanting ssm and pbf to fight for years!

This is good in every way. It’s a great fight as it is. It sets a new standard for drug testing in major boxing events. And it puts some more pressure on team Pacquiao to make the fight down the line.

Good news

There is a very real chance that both Mayweather and Pac lose their respective fights. Also if Mayweather wins and goes on to fight Pac that should stop people from saying he avoids dangerous fighters. They are probably the two of the five best welters out there.

Hells Yes!

I am honestly as excited about this fight as the May-Pac. So much history and pent up bad blood (sorry I had too) that this will be a classic fight and 24/7. Hopefully GBP and Mayweather go all out again and at least try to get a decent undercard as well. Very Very Excited!

by waldo47 on Jan 29, 2010 2:43 AM EST reply actions

Yeah, I’m very interested to see what they do with the undercard. Maybe a Robert Guerrero fight? Given the limited options at 130, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Guerrero-Rocky Juarez sometime. It’s not like Juarez has a whole lot else to do either.

I guarantee Saul Alvarez will be on the undercard

He’s Mexican (on Cinco de Mayo weekend), he’s a big draw, and GBP will want to show off their shiny new toy.

Ortiz-Campbell might also be a possibility

Although that seems more natural to go on the Marquez-Khan undercard.

Wow

I just gained some respect for Mayweather. I thought he was copletely afraid Should I to fight someone that could beat him. I figured he’d fight someone like Paulie M. Good for Mayweather. I don’t know whether or not to pull for Mayweather now in this fight. I still don’t like Floyd, but if he wins then maybe we’ll see him fight Manny…

Happy to See Olympic Style Drug Testing

All major MMA fights should have olympic style drug testing- good to see that Mayweather didn’t look like a hypocrite here and avoid that issue with Mosley

by kibbled_bits on Jan 29, 2010 10:44 AM EST reply actions

That shut up the haters, didn't it!?

You have to respect Floyd as a fighter, he’s truly a great fighter.

And I’m so glad to see Olympic Style Drug Testing getting a mention in the sport, Flo Jo could pass negative.

Anyone got any ideas about the undercard? I heard Alvarez, Ortiz and Gurrero will all be on show.

I think we’ve long since established that if an actual grown-up uses the word “hater” in an argument, it’s a sure sign that they’re more interested in posturing than having a rational debate. (See link 1, link 2, many more comments in the same thread.)

Not meaning to be argumentative,

and I am glad this fight seems to be on its way, but no it doesn’t change the fact that the fight could have been made a few years ago, or that Shane is the first quality WW that Floyd is fighting and that he had to be backed into a corner to make it happen. That said—and, again—glad that this one is coming.

by Don From Prov on Jan 29, 2010 12:02 PM EST reply actions

It depends what you mean as quality WW

Baldomir and Judah were top 2 when Mayweather fought them, but if you’re definition of quality WW is about ability and not purely a ranking, Shane Mosley is probably the toughest WW Floyd has faced.

I don’t want to get involved in a flame war, so I’m backing away!

BTW, does anybody else think that Shane’s victory over Margarito has been blown way out of proportion and that he’s beginning his decline?

by Dafs on Jan 29, 2010 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

I think it’s definitely the time in his career where we can look for signs of decline, but no – I don’t think his win over Margo is overblown, he decimated a guy with an iron jaw. And no – I haven’t yet seen any signs of true decline.

Having said that, I don’t like his chances against Floyd, whether he’s declined or not.

Dafs: I believe

that a number of people were very high on Margarito as an unstoppable force when he fought Shane, and many folks thought that Shane was in decline: The two “facts” were supposed to add up to Shane catching an eventual beat down and very likely suffer the first stoppage of his career (none of this was, of course, universal thinking, but it was pretty widespread). Margartio had things to think about by the time he left his dressing room of course, but beyond his glove loading bust, I’d say that Antonio looked terrible as he approached the ring: He’d come in underweight (odd for a big welterweight), and while Shane was brilliant and made the outcome look like the only outcome possible, Margarito seemed unusually weak in the very first round, getting pushed around like one wouldn’t expect him to. Margartio might have had more problems than losing his loaded gloves that night. People were looking for decline in Shane then, and he’s older and ring-rusty now, so it couldn’t be a complete shock if he’s more vulnerable.

by Don From Prov on Jan 29, 2010 1:21 PM EST reply actions

I thought Mosley would win

as I’ve never been a fan of Margarito. I gave him no hope against Cotto (oops), and strongly disagreed with Steve Kim who was like a kid in a candy store every time somebody mentioned his name.

Anyway, I thought Berto would beat Mosley, as Margarito isn’t fast and Mosley was out-manouvered (not out-boxed) by Cotto back in 2007. I think Mayweather wins pretty comfortably, and Mosley is starting to decline but he can blame it on ring rust for all he wants.
