Bad Left Hook Best of the Decade - Knockout of the Decade

Now that 2009 has wrapped up, we can take a look at the best of the decade that just was.  We still have fighter, fight and round of the decade left to go.

When voting, please only consider the time that the fighter was in the specified weight class during this decade.  Also, I'm not going to count obvious ballot stuffing when I tally these up in a couple weeks.  Due to ballot stuffing patterns, the Manny Pacquiao fight isn't in the poll, but votes will be counted in the comments.

Videos and nominees after the jump, below the poll

VOTE +1 AFTER THIS COMMENT FOR A VOTE FOR PACQUIAO-HATTON

Personally, it’s my knockout of the decade, but based on prior voting patterns, there would be no way to determine what it should really be if I actually stick it in the poll. Depending on whether it looks like we have way more votes than usual, I may just count the “other” tab as votes for Pac-Hatton.

I think the reason why it’s not in the polls is because Pac-huggers will just overwhelm the votes, right? =) But a vote here for Pac-Hatton anyway, one of the most memorable KOs of all-time.

Pretty much

Every time I put Pac in the poll, we get about 10 times as many votes as usual and all of the extra votes are for Pac.

A couple of other sparklers for consideration

Randall Bailey KO4 Francisco Figueroa:
Bailey flicks out a great blinding cover jab, followed by a murderous right cross that’s so crisp it looks like they sped up the tape.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tCFhWJg1Z8

David Tua KO1 Michael Moorer
One of my favorite “delayed reaction” KO’s of the decade.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlS82LC3fTo&feature=related

Kelly Pavlik KO8 Jose Luis Zertuche
A very pretty cross “puts Zertuche to sleep”, in what turned out to be the big auditioning tape for the next middleweight champion.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HchCpnORAqk

And, obviously, this fight missed the cutoff by a couple of months, but as long as were talking KOs in the past ten years…

Oleg Maskaev KO8 Hasim Rachman
Oleg shows why people still (sort of) care enough to see him get torched these days. This was the sort of KO that blows the roof off at a good fight party.

Maskaev-Rahman was in 1999

Otherwise that certainly would have made it on the list.

Yup, I remember the fight was very close to Christmas. Holy mother, that was sheer chaos… a very memorable clonking.

Not sure why my “Pavlik KO8 Zertuche” didn’t come up bold, but it’s not a comment on the KO. It was a very sinister, bone-chilling punch, and one of the few moments this decade where I reallythink we saw a good, fast-thinking ref save a fighter’s health or life.

I voted for Allen Green

that was pure destruction, and it was in the first round. There had been no punches thrown, no tiring out. He went out there and KTFO this dude without there being a fight.

P.S. – was that guy okay? Thats as bad as I’ve ever seen a fighter be knocked out.

by mason_beer on Jan 8, 2010 10:27 AM EST reply actions

He was never as aggressive after that

Codrington was a pretty good fighter, but he had a rotten chin and pretty bad stamina as well. Made it to the finale of The Contender a few years back where he lost to Sakio Bika in the finals in a pretty good fight.

You left my favourite two of your list!!

Not even an honorable mention for Randall Bailey knocking out Frankie Figueroa?
Or Danny Williams knocking out Mark Potter?

Some people are acting like Pacquiao should be expected to have just gone, "Yeah sure, let’s do something I’ve never done before because your dad made some dumbass baseless comment."

Bailey-Figueroa was an oversight I guess

I figured it was only the third best KO of this year, but I’ll put it in the honorable mentions.

You know, I voted for RJJ's behind the back KO because I'm a fanboy

but I rewatched Pac-Hatton and immediately regretted it. Good lord, that still gives me chills. And it also reminded me that Lampley, who I basically like, absolutely, positively, blew that call. He sounded like he just got out of bed with “Oh my gosh. What a straight left hand.”

by The Boxer Rebellion on Jan 8, 2010 10:58 AM EST reply actions

and then asking "will he beat the count?"

when Hatton was on the ground gasping like a fish out of water (which was actually pretty scary). I’m sure he’d like that call back.

by The Boxer Rebellion on Jan 8, 2010 10:59 AM EST up reply actions

That Ko needed no call

Shocked awe would probably have bene the best response! Personally I dropped my beer and jumped around a bit while shouting but that’s not the point…

fair point

Honestly at the time, I celebrated for a couple of seconds, then was immediately concerned about Hatton’s safety, because he did NOT look good for a couple of minutes there.

by The Boxer Rebellion on Jan 8, 2010 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

I’m sure he’d like that call back.

Yeah I bet he would too. I think he was just so caught up in how utterly dominant Pacquiao was against Hatton that he was genuinely as shocked as most of us watching. When Pacquiao knocked Hatton out with that left, I had a few friends over for the fight. None of us really exploded or went, “OH SHIT!” or anything. Just kind of, “Oh fuck…that’s it. Wow.” I think Lampley was kind of in the same boat.

thing is what do you look for in a knockout, the reaction of the person getting knocked out, if its that its gotta be Tszyu Zudah

If its looking for sweet boxing i think Roy Jones with his bob 2 the left, then 2 the right, accompnied with a sweet right hook, or maybe Lewis Ko’ing of Rahmann,

damm this is hard,

Im going for Lewis Rahmann, 2 fantastic punches

by Sweet science on Jan 8, 2010 10:59 AM EST reply actions

Incredibly hard to call

But I went for donaire’s insanely good counter against Darchinyan. I’m not too sure about it though as many of these are very, very close.

was the most entertaining KO hands down. Watching Judah “chicken walkin’” round the ring, with no idea where he was has got to be one of the most bizarre sights I’ve seen in 40+ yrs. of watching boxing. Peace!!

For actual shock value

Danny Williams over Mark Potter for me. Danny hadn’t been able to throw a legitimately hard punch since about round 2, and his shoulder had popped even further out of place in round 6. The fact that Jim Watt was in the middle of saying he had to be pulled out and that he would just be knocked out made it even more sensational.

I reckon Carl Thompson knocking out Rothman is also worth a shout – that was a stunning right hand from absolutely nowhere when Thompson was being hit around the ring.

tszyu v. judah got my vote. its one of my all time favorites for a few reasons. a couple being kostya is one of my all time favorite fighters and two, i have always loathed zab (and max kellermans man love for him) and it was fun as hell seeing him get ktfo and cry like a baby afterwards. tua v morrer was a good one too.

its a different decade but since this blog wasn’t around in 2000 id recommend taking a look at some of the best of the 90s. more of those are coming to my mind that of the past decade. simon brown vs. terry norris 1. shocking defeat by norris. i probably cried myself to sleep after that one. speaking of brown, hes the victim of one of the most brutal ko’s ive seen at the hands of vincent pettway. that was is famous for brown throwing punches while he was knocked out. also take a look at the first gerard mcclellan vs julian jackson 1. brutal fight and knockout by the g-man there. tyson ko over razor ruddock in their first fight, tyson ko over botha and of course mercer’s near killing of tommy morrison. theres also one i seen live that was pretty damn brutal to see live. bazooka quartey vs. jung-oh park. park looked like he was a just pulled from a head on collision with a freight train after 4 rounds of getting the ike’s jab and right hand bounce off his face over and over. poor park never fought again

one of mine too.

my favorite of all has to be vs Agostino Cardamone. jackson was fading as a fighter and coming off the 2 vicious beat downs by g-man. he was getting beat up again by cardamone and rocked in the first then unleashed a left hook from hell and knocked cardamone silly to win the vacant wbc belt.

Part of the problem too

Is that the further back you go, the less likely it is to be on Youtube. Juarez-Diaz was named by every major publication as knockout of the year, yet is nowhere on the net. I’m shocked that Briggs-Lyakhovich isn’t up there, which certainly would have replaced something on the poll had it been on Youtube.

One more from the 90’s worth a mention was Jimmy Thunder vs. Crawford Grimsley. From an aesthetic perspective, that might be my favorite knockout ever. Just stormed in there and turned the guy to jello with one punch.

But only because of the caliber of the other events and victims. Bailey’s sunday punch was poetry in motion. If you designed a robot to pull it off it, I doubt it could demonstrate that blinding combination much better.

I think the worst knockout of the decade was one that wasn’t even scored a knockout:Martinez KO7 Cintron, with Cintron staring up at the ref in disbelief, thinking it was a head butt that made him see all them pink elephants. The recent parking lot A&B Grano pulledon Kauffman was up there too. That was both great and awful, actually. I half expected Jimmy Hart to run into the ring with a folder chair.
