Oscar de la Hoya, Bernard Hopkins to host Campillo-Shumenov rematch
Light heavyweight titlist Gabriel Campillo will rematch Beibut Shumenov on January 29 at Las Vegas' Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, and "hosting" the event will be Golden Boy Promotions leaders and future Hall of Fame fighters Oscar de la Hoya and Bernard Hopkins.
FOX Sports Net will televise.
Campillo (19-2, 6 KO) beat Shumenov (8-1, 6 KO) by close decision in Kazakhstan last August. Shumenov, 26, was attempting to win a major title in just his ninth professional fight, after blowing through guys like Montell Griffin, Epi Mendoza and Byron Mitchell very early in his career. By all accounts, Shumenov made a fine showing for himself against Campillo, too.
What I find most interesting about Shumenov, though, is that he's clearly not overly concerned with unbeaten records. He wants titles and money (he also runs KZ Event, which has gone very well for him thus far) like all boxers do, but he's moved so fast that he was risking his record when he faced a journeyman like Donnell Wiggins in his fourth-ever pro bout. You don't see guys move that fast, really. Even Yuriorkis Gamboa was babied a bit more than that.
Oscar and Hopkins "hosting" the event will hopefully help them drum up some interest, as neither of them have any name whatsoever in the United States.
Tickets for the event are priced at $150, $125, $100, $50 and $40 and go on sale tomorrow morning. You can get tickets at the venue, all Ticketmaster locations, or at Ticketmaster.com.

Not that there was a better place anywhere else in the U.S. to have this fight, but there’s no way in hell anyone shows up to watch this in person.
Kind of what I’m guessing, too. Even with Oscar throwing his name in there to help matters, who the fuck is paying $150 for this? Not that it’s a bad fight, either, but Dawson-Tarver couldn’t sell in Vegas.

We'll see whats more profitable
Selling 30,000 tickets at $10 a pop or trying to get people in there for a lower end fight in Vegas.
I guarantee you that the ticket prices for Tarver-Dawson were way higher than this. This is about on par with the prices for an FNF type show.
Anyway, anyone know whether this will be televised? Would be interesting if it was. I heard the first one was good, but I could never track down a copy.

I can’t imagine it’ll be on TV. ESPN has Brinkley-Stevens that night, and Shobox has Abregu-Garcia. Maybe the Ring will get it online.

Actually, it IS going to be televised. FSN will have it.

Sweet
Brinkley-Stevens could be a really good fight for as long as it lasts as well. Good ‘domestic-level’ clash.

yeah
All in all that’s a pretty kickass night of potentially very fun fights, then Mosley-Berto the next night on HBO.

Isn't there a question about Shumenov paying people?
Besides that, I rather like the guy. Gotta love a prospect so willing to risk his record.
I think Byron Mitchell might have said something, but I also might be wrong about that. Campillo’s fighting him for a second time, so the check must have come through.

He didn't pay Campillo for the rematch
because he said Campillo skipped out on his post-fight drug test, then they settled the matter by Shumenov paying him but getting a rematch on neutral ground.

Shumenov’s a talented guy, but I’ve heard rumblings about his difficulty finding camps willing to work with him and some serious questions about the money backing him. Not just about payment to Campillo (which is shady) but regarding their backgrounds. I think he has a strong chance of beating someone like Campillo in a rematch but I’m interested to see how a decision might go down.
