ah, hell
We’ll probably miss the live start of the ShoBox card then. Or maybe, if Bute gets Brinkley out quick, which is very possible. Either way we’ll have this fight and at least the Tarver fight (in another thread) tonight.

There are different
ESPN3 fight times listed on every ESPN source—the schedules aren’t always at all trustworthy on ESPN—I’m tuning up for 9:00 pm in case of. Can’t trust ‘em. It won’t take Bute long, in any case.

It said 9:30 earlier in the week. Maybe they pushed it back or were just estimating.

Officially boycotting Pacquiao vs. Margarito.
In the US there is no undercard for Bute-Brinkley.

Oh, maybe that’s why there are conflicting hours… the undercard is:
Ionut Dan Ion vs Andres Pablo Villafane
Adrian Diaconu vs Omar Sheika
Officially boycotting Pacquiao vs. Margarito.
yeah I think that's probably it
I know the UK show has the undercard, but the ESPN3 show just has the main event.

Kevin Connors and Sergio Mora will be the commentators for this one
Jon Anik and BJ Flores will do tomorrow’s Klitschko/Briggs fight.
Wonder how Mora is as an analyst.
Michael Robinson leads the Seahawks in completion percentage, yards-per-attempt, and QB rating.
You know what I wonder? Are boring fights aware that they’re boring? Do they watch their own fights and go: damn, what a stinker? Or do they live in eternal denial… I’m being forced to re-watch Mosley/More btw…
Officially boycotting Pacquiao vs. Margarito.
Forced?
(They live in eternal denial, I’m sure of it.)
If love would die along with death, this life wouldn't be so hard--Andrew Vachss
Mora seems to live in denial about a lot of things pertaining to his career. Guys like Mora tend to think they’re misunderstood, amazing practitioners of “the sweet science,” like they’re Willie Pep or Floyd Mayweather. But then I have lots of thoughts on guys being called “great defensive stylists” who really just don’t like to fight at all. Mayweather’s a great defensive stylist, because he turns his defense into offense. Sergio Mora turns his defense into hugging.

I think I'm just going to watch the UK feed of the Bute-Brinkley show
ESPN3 is kind of unstable during prime hours and the UK commentary will probably be better, although I have enjoyed Mora as a commentator the couple of times he’s done little bits on FNF and the like. Mora predicted that Breidis Prescott would lose to Miguel Vazquez.

Dan-Villafane R1

Two southpaws. Jo Jo with a jab to the body. What’s a good J-word for “body”? Villafane is really uncoordinated early. This is a ten-rounder. They keep mentioning that Dan lost in June but not noting that almost everyone felt it was a robbery. That’s what I like about these smaller cards. The commentators never like to question boxing officials, like they’re afraid that the Turkish boxing officials are going to get them blackballed. Or else he doesn’t really know. I don’t know, but I like to assume guys calling boxing on TV pay as much attention as I do.
Villafane on his bike and really doing nothing in the opening round. Dan is just trying to time him some, it would appear. Body shot lands for Jo Jo.
Dan 10-9
Uneventful. Biggest thing for me in this round is I decided to just call him Jo Jo Dan from now on and forget “Ionut Dan Ion.” It’s not like I call Winky Wright “Ronald.”

Dan-Villafane R2

Villafane opening up with two jabs that miss and a flurry of sloppy punches that miss. Right hook and straight left from Dan. He’s clearly the far superior technician and much smarter, better-schooled fighter. Commentator just called this a “stylistic gridlock.” What a great way to put it. Dan’s cutting off the ring and then mostly feinting. Slow left from Villafane misses. Then he’s back on his bike. He’s landed nothing. Another uneventful round.

Dan-Villafane R3

Dan coming out this round looking to get more aggressive, but lands just a jab. Dan with a right hook to the body, now goes back with a jab after Villafane ties him up. Dan is going for the kill this round. He’s far more aggressive now and throwing with purpose. Right hook by Dan, then a left hand. That’s worked a couple times. Right hook to the body, then smacks him to the head. Right hook to the body again. That’s landing at will now. Villafane is tying up whenever Dan really starts throwing. Villafane lunges, misses, gets hit, ties up or runs. He already looks really tired. He’s been out of the ring since May 2009, they say, so that’s probably not helping. Dan with a left, Villafane ties him up yet again. Easy round for Dan.

If Villafane were interested in mixing it up he’d be knocked out by now, I reckon. Dan is better at everything, and noticeably so. Left hand and right hook, then Villafane ties him up in the corner while ducking down to Dan’s waist. BIG LEFT HAND AND DOWN GOES VILLAFANE! That’s going to be it. He’s not interested in getting up.

Fight is exactly what you’d expect. Gaudet going about 80% speed against a totally overmatched guy. Labarda with a left, but then Gaudet clocks him with a right as it gets exciting for about six seconds. Now they’re throwing, as Labarda appears ready to hurl something at the wall and see if it’ll stick. Left hook by Gaudet as Labarda recklessly charges in. BIG left hook by Gaudet! Body shot follows. Labarda takes it and stands. Body shot strays a little low from Gaudet, and then the round ends.

Gaudet-Labarda R3

Left hook Gaudet. Labarda really trying to fight, so at least there’s that. He’s just not good enough. Labarda lost his last fight to Billy Dib by TKO-6. Right hand Gaudet. He’s being reckless now and throwing power shots. Another right. This is a lot like the first fight. Labarda is just too slow to give Gaudet any actual problems. Gaudet is still a couple rungs below being truly world class, but he’s a decent fighter.
Gaudet hurting Labarda now with about 35 seconds left in the round. Labarda ties up. Uppercut Gaudet. He’s just firing power shots now, using a jab just for show.

Diaconu-Sheika R4

Sheika with a right. Diaconu does look a little off. It’s probably just the rust, but he’s not as sharp as he could be for sure. And Sheika, even shot, is no chump. If anything, he’s got too much heart to be a total rollover patsy. Diaconu starting to pick up a bit of steam, but then he’ll go back to his shell and wait on Sheika, who isn’t exactly wild about throwing first. He knows his best punches come when Diaconu leaves himself open, and Diaconu has done that plenty so far.
Sheika with a left to the body, then Diaconu throws back. Sheika “strays low” again. These punches just don’t look low to me, but whatever. Low’s whatever the ref says it is. Diaconu pressing again in the final half minute. Then he backs off.

Right hand Diaconu. Not a lot to really describe with this fight — Diaconu is slowly but I think surely gaining steam and taking over the fight. Diaconu-Sheika R8

Right hand Sheika, partially blocked, AND HERE WE GO! IT’S A WAR NOW! And Diaconu is the one to back down. Sheika is coming out this round to war, and he needs to. Diaconu landing shots now, and he’s gotten it back to the pace he wants. Good right by Sheika, then Diaconu lands in return. Sheika shoots an uppercut that misses. Diaconu landing again in the final 10 seconds. Spirited round from Omar, but not enough.

Diaconu-Sheika R9

Diaconu still in control. Omar’s right hand still has power. And now he’s backing Diaconu down again. I think they’re both tiring out a little bit — Omar because he’s old, and Diaconu because he’s been inactive. Rights and lefts from Diaconu. Now Diaconu nailing him with about 30 seconds left. Montreal crowd really comes alive.
Big rights by Diaconu! Sheika’s defense is really gone it seems. Diaconu tearing him up now. Sheika got beaten up in this round, even though he landed some good shots.

Sheika stalking and trying to land that big right. Diaconu not doing a ton anymore, maybe just trying to seal the win, which he surely has on the cards. Diaconu lands counter shots. “This a real crossroads fight for Sheika.” It’s been a crossroads last seven years for Sheika. Right hand Diaconu. Another. Sheika can’t find him. Diaconu pounding on him late in the round, because Sheika’s still trying his best to win this fight. Big finish for Diaconu.

The ESPN3 quality is really good tonight for me. I love to watch smaller NCAA football on Saturdays and it’s generally pretty choppy, but tonight it’s crisp. So that’s nice. Right hand Brinkley. Bute’s really waiting on him more than he probably needs to, but Bute doesn’t get aggressive until he finds a really good reason to. Really, I think Bute is being far too tentative here. He doesn’t look bad or anything, just not as good as you might expect early against Jesse Brinkley. Brinkley really trying to be aggressive. That might be the best “trademark punch” in boxing today. There it is again. Brinkley fires back with a right after another one lands. He can’t budge Bute. BIG SHOT AGAIN AND BRINKLEY IS DOWN AGAIN! Referee calls it this time.
Lucian Bute KO-9

You must hate Kelly Pavlik.

Arum would be out of his mind to match Pavlik up with a guy who fights like the last guy who beat Kelly and has legit power in his hands. To be completely honest, I don’t see any advantage Pavlik has and it would most likely be a one sided beating.
"Dawson was NOT a hype job. Dude schooled Adamek, beat Tarver twice (neither competitive), beat Johnson twice (once close, once a wipeout) and even beat Harding when Harding was still good. That is not hype. Those are results. I love how people see a guy lose once and all of a sudden nothing they ever did means anything. You are dead wrong."

Bute is a freaking beast.
He’s not human.

To be fair, Bute did a terrible job of finishing the fight in the 6th round. Jesse was done and he should have closed it up right there.

I hear how many here feel about Bute ...but let's see him fight someone better than
Andrade, Miranda and Brinkley; three guys to whom the word elite is rarely applied.
Let’s not forget that it was Kelly Pavlik’s destruction of a then formidable Miranda that launched his soon to be over-hyped career.
He does
and he’s very, very good, but it’s the truth he’s favored in Canada, and has not fought the likes of, say, Froch, Ward, or Abraham. And he’d have to fight a lot harder if he did—which he might well do, probably will do, but not a certainty
