Ustinov is just awful

I really mean that. Just awful.

Do you think if the Klitschko brothers ever do a double main event supercard, the main support will be Banks-Ustinov?

Ugh

They signed Afolabi recently, so hopefully they’ll start using him as bigger support.

If he gets punched in the head and goes full Memento now, all he’ll ever have to do is direct two mirrors against each other, and he’ll know his name again. (I doubt he can operate the two mirrors, though.)

I watched the pretty entertaining Lewis-Briggs fight just the other day, again, and although Briggs’ defense hasn’t improved from the shoddy shield he wielded then, man, it was a lot easier to take him seriously at 228. Yes, 228.

Vitali-Briggs measures up, sadly, to Wlad-Peter.

By about the third round, this will be over, but not done. Surprise: strings of one-round KOs against nobodies (or in Briggs’ case, KOs with one one-round NC for variety’s sake) do not put you in proper fighting shape.

I’m a Yankee hater, but if the Rangers built a 5-0 lead and lost again today, it would be kinda cool, in the way it is when two trains wreck into each other.

Klitschko-Briggs R1

Right hand Vitali right off the bat. Left hook, but not much on it. Not that he needs a ton on his punches. Right hand over the top again. Vitali is coming out pretty fast. Briggs is a smidge hesitant, as usual, cocking his right hand back, as usual. Briggs is about a foot short on a right. Huge right by Klitschko clocks Briggs. Briggs is letting that get in constantly. I think Briggs is already huffing and puffing. Right hand Vitali again. This is not looking good for Shannon Briggs, to say the least. Easy round for Vitali.

Klitschko-Briggs R2

Briggs continues jabbing to the body. Left hook Klitschko. Briggs moving around a lot more to start this round at least. Klitschko backs him up with pawing jabs. Left hook lands again for Vitali. That backs Shannon down again. Left hook again. Briggs just won’t uncork the right. Right hand Vitali cracks yet again. He’s looking very good in this one. Briggs is still just using a jab to the body. Another jab lands for Vitali. Right hand by Briggs to the body. Now still going to the body. Little flurry by Klitschko. Briggs still going to the body. Right hand Vitali clips Briggs this time. Briggs backing down constantly. Another flurry by Vitali. This is total dominance. Vitali has almost no respect for Briggs. Another right. Shannon throws a right but misses.

Klitschko-Briggs R3

Left hook Vitali. Shannon goes to the body, then up top, nothing landing. Right by Klitschko. Briggs bites on a feint something awful. Almost comical. Left hook by Klitschko. Right hand Klitschko, and another. Briggs has absolutely got to head hunt him and throw caution to the wind. This isn’t a bad fight, but it’s all Vitali. Briggs with a body shot. Klitschko with more rights. Jabs from Klitschko. Briggs looks tired. I could be wrong about it, but he’s looking tired. Cracking right from Klitshcko punctuates another dominant round.

Klitschko-Briggs R4

Briggs comes out and throws a long right, but Vitali ducks back and it misses. Briggs throws some chippy body shots when they tie up. Vitali seems to have either felt those or been pissed off by them. Maybe both. Two rights from Klitschko. Briggs is moving around, but not doing a lot. Body shot by Shannon. Right hand Vitali. Briggs seems to be getting a little more active, at least in terms of movement. Right hand inside by Vitali. Briggs is still getting pounded in there. Two rights and a left hook back down Briggs.

Briggs misses a right halfway into the usual round, then Vitali opens up and nails him a few times. Briggs is looking a little discouraged, but — oh, now he eats a big right hand over the top. Another right. Briggs just has no defense at all. Another nasty right by Vitali. Briggs is taking these shots nicely, but he’s just getting “pwned” in there as the kids said four years ago.

Klitschko just starting to take Briggs apart at the seams now. Every time he throws it seems like he’s landing, and fairly hard. Another big right. And another. Left hook. Briggs throws back but misses. He’s totally out of this fight. Right hand Vitali. Short right from Klitschko. Stiff right Vitali. Left hook Vitali. Everything he’s doing is working. Right hand, jab inside after. Left hook grazes, and another stiff right from Vitali. Jesus, Briggs is definitely holding up, but that’s about it.

Right hand Klitschko. Another right by Klitschko, but that one wasn’t all the way in. Briggs getting hurt now, about a minute into the round. Vitali really laying it on thick. Briggs wobbling around as Klitschko puts the pressure on. Briggs is about to hit E on the gas tank. Another just nasty right with about 5 seconds left. Another right, and Briggs is getting hammered! Another right hand by Vitali. You gotta hand it to Briggs for how long he’s held up. Briggs backed down again. Vitali wants the finish. Briggs throws a right, his corner is excited. But he can’t find Vitali. Another right by Vitali hurts Briggs. RIght hand again. He’s also following those with lefts that aren’t huge, but are getting in. Stiff right ONCE AGAIN. For God’s sake. This is getting butt fugly.

Left hook Vitali. Right hand again. Just destryoing him now. Briggs misses a right, Vitali keeps bombing on him. Another right lands. Briggs is going again with a minute left in the round. Vitali is landing at will now. This is totally one-sided, even more than earlier. Briggs is tired, beaten up, and continues to get demolished.

Klitschko again lands a right hand. Right hand again. Vitali seems to have taken his foot off the gas. The referee is screaming at Briggs’ corner for … swearing. Jesus. Grow up. Who cares? It’s a fucking fight, for fuck’s fucking sake.

Shit.

He actually stopped the action for that. Goddamn.

And we’re back to fighting and it’s all Vitali still. Rights landing, lefts landing, everything landing. Briggs has some gas left, shockingly, but he’s just not in this fight. Now wobbled with another right. 20 seconds to go in the round. Klitschko backing him down with long shots. 10 seconds to go. Another right! Left hook, and the round ends. Briggs is all sorts of discombobulated.

Another right hand immediately. I think I had the highest guess for how long this would go (RTD-9) but even I’m surprised watching this that it’s gone this long.

Right hand again. Briggs is a mess. Hard, short right. Another right. Left hook, jab, right hand, right hand. Klitschko killing him! Klitschko unloading! Seriously, stop the fight. This is disastrous. Right after right after right after left after right after left. Briggs is getting utterly destroyed. This is just brutal. Briggs can’t get away from anything. Right, left, right, right, left, right. A minute left in the round. Ref isn’t going to do anything apparently. Another laser right. Briggs actually shoots in with a left hook to the body, then leans on Vitali.

Right hand again. Right hand, right hand. Left hand. Left hook. They call it target practice, which makes target practice sound hard. Two more shots. Briggs is a mess as the round ends.

Vitali looked about as good as you’d expect a heavyweight champion to look against a journeyman who was never much more than a club fighter. It’s not Vitali’s fault there’s nobody to fight, but this was a cruel mismatch and never should have happened. The last three or four rounds definitely should never have happened.

I dunno, to me Briggs only had one really good win in his career— the miracle KO of Liakovich. The Foreman fight was a robbery, and Ray Mercer was ancient when Briggs KO’d him in 2005. He had no other wins against anything resembling a top 10 contender. Briggs hung around a long time and had a nice run beating up some stiffs, but he was never a true contender in my book.
