Hot boxer alert

From yesterday’s weigh-in:

Ogledis Suarez and Shantel Martinez fought once before, with Martinez winning a controversial decision (and still Suarez’s only loss). The rematch is a title eliminator.

Jones-Brudov Rd 1

Jones comes out strong with his jab right off the bat. A nice 1-2 combination. As an aside, jeez Jones looks fat. Consider he’s 6’4" and fighting at cruiserweight (and started his career at welterweight), he should be pretty thin, but he looks about Sam Peter sized.

Brudov snaps off a couple of jabs of his own, and attempts a couple left hooks that mostly whiff. Brudov circling and Jones stalking. Jones throws a really slow right hand. Junes just being much more aggressive than Brudov. Big uppercut for Jones. Brudov throws a combination and Jones gets his head out of the way before it gets there. There’s really a huge handspeed difference between the two, but that didn’t keep Jones from landing the better punches that round. We’ll see if his conditioning comes into play.

10-9 Jones

Jones-Brudov Rd 2

Brudov moving forward a bit behind the jab, mostly to the body. Jones with a few jabs that have very little snap on them. Brudov with a strong jab to the body. Jones is being inconsistent about using his reach advantage – for a while he keeps Brudov away with the jab, but when he stops throwing, Brudov gets in there. A lot of posturing in the middle of the ring. Brudov with a jab that snaps Jones’s head back. Jones with a swooping right hook. He tries to steal the round at the end, but almost nothing lands. Not much going on for either guy that round, but I give the slight edge to Brudov.

10-9 Brudov
19-19

Jones-Brudov Rd 3

Jones with a couple of jabs to start. The jab is starting to have a little more on it now. Brudov whiffs with a few shots, then finally lands a jab of his own. Jones catches Brudov with a short right hook. Brudov triples up the jab. At some point, if he wants to win rounds in Panama against a Panamania, Brudov will need to land something other than a jab. Jones controlled with his jab in the first half of the round, Brudov with his in the second, but at least Jones also landed that decent hook, which proves to be the difference maker for me.

10-9 Jones
29-28 Jones

Jones is fat as hell

The guy actually has talent, but he just doesn’t fight

"Dawson was NOT a hype job. Dude schooled Adamek, beat Tarver twice (neither competitive), beat Johnson twice (once close, once a wipeout) and even beat Harding when Harding was still good. That is not hype. Those are results. I love how people see a guy lose once and all of a sudden nothing they ever did means anything. You are dead wrong."

Jones-Brudov Rd 4

The two go back and forth with jabbing – Jones with four jabs, Brudov with four of his own. Jones feinting a lot but not throwing much, and Brudov manages to sneak a couple of shots in there. Jones is starting to do his uncoordinated James Toney routine a bit. Speaking of which, have I mentioned how fat Jones looks yet?

Jones pressing forward with some slow punches, and Brudov backs him off with a jab. Brudov circling backwards, and Jones just stalks and doesn’t throw. A combination from Jones elicits cheers from the crowd but didn’t have much effect. A couple of nice right hands from Jones at the end of the round makes it a tougher round to score, but for me it’s still…

Brudov 10-9
38-38

Jones-Brudov Rd 5

Jones throwing the jab while Brudov bounces around on the outside a bit. Brudov jumps in with a jab and Jones catches him with a right hand. Brudov with a nice 1-2 combination that snaps Jones’s head back, probably the best punches of the fight so far. Jones back to throwing the jab, now with a bit more conviction, but also a bit looping. Brudov misses a jab and Jones comes over the top with a right hand. Brudov trying to stick and move now, but he’s not doing enough sticking. Jones with a solid jab, and again a flurry of mostly ineffective activity by Jones at the bell.

Brudov 10-9
Brudov 48-47

I wouldn’t be surprised if the judges have it 49-46 Jones though. The rounds have all been tough to score so far.

Jones-Brudov Rd 6

Brudov throws about the first 15 punches of the round, mostly jab but a good right hook to the body mixed in there. Jones seems to be taking the round off a bit, and his jab is getting lazy again. Brudov dancing around the outside and not throwing punches, but not getting hit either. Jones with a decent right uppercut to the body followed by a right hook. Jones is trying to use his jab as a weapon and not to set up other punches, but he’s not throwing with enough conviction for it to really be more than a hinderance. Jones is being much more active than Brudov overall for the second half of this round though. Brudov with a right hand that gets through around the bell.

Hard round to score. Jones didn’t do anything for the first minute, Brudov didn’t do anything for the last minute and a half. Edge to Jones.

Jones-Brudov Rd 7

Brudov lands a jab, then gets out of the way of the nexxt few punches Jones throws. For the first time in the fight, they exchange punches a little bit, with Jones probably getting the better of it. Brudov has a cut under his left eye, looks like the kind caused by abrasion from repeated punching. Jones with a big combo that’s partially blocked. Brudov with a couple of snappy jabs.

Jones with a right hook that’s blocked, but Brudov tries to counter and Jones catches him when he repeats the hook. Jones more active than Brudov overall this round, while Brudov was more accurate. Edge goes to Jones on the harder punching.

10-9 Jones

Jones-Brudov Rd 8

Brudov with a couple jabs, and then Jones remembers to start throwing his and stalks forward behind a push jab. Jones with a four punch combination, mostly blocked. Big right hook for Jones, also half blocked. But these are getting through enough to do some damage still.

Brudov with a series of jabs that mostly get blocked. The two come inside for one of the first times tonight and end up wrestling a bit. Brudov with a straight right-left hook combination, but it had nothing on it. Jones gets Brudov against the ropes for a second, but can’t take much advantage. Jones then with another decent combination, this time landing most of his shots, and Brudov looks a bit bothered. Jones with several powerful shots that land clean in the last 10 seconds. Widest round of the night so far.

Jones 10-9

Jones-Brudov Rd 9

Brudov jumps in with a right hook that catches Jones, but follows it up with nothing. Jones starting to finally put his punches together the last few rounds, and he’s thrown a couple of combinations this round already. Jones with sort of a half-hook half-jab that lands and catches Brudov off guard.

Brudov with a body shot. He’s standing in there, but now Jones is throwing back and Brudov starts to shell up a bit. While Brudov is clearly much quicker, he’s having problems with the size and power difference. In-ring, Jones must outweigh Brudov by 25 pounds. Jones with a nice right hand that was set up by the jab. Jones coming forward behind punches from both hands now. Jones seems to finally be getting into a groove. Again, he throws a number of big shots in the last 10 seconds, though Brudov sneaks in a few of his own.

Jones 10-9

Jones-Brudov Rd 10

While there haven’t been lots of wild exchanges, this has been a pretty smart fight by Jones and a decent tactical fight to watch. Jones seems to be coming on strong at the right time though.

Brudov with a couple of jabs, followed by a left hook, but none of it really lands. Brudov with a jab now that does land. Brudov with a jab-jab-straight combo that all finds the target but has little to nothing on it. At this point Brudov is just trying to throw scoring blows, sacrificing power in favor of trying to accentuate his quickness. Jones with a combination of hooks and uppercuts – once again mostly blocked, but enough got through. Brudov with a nice series of punches, landing the hardest shots he’s landed in several rounds.

Brudov with a 1-2 that lands, and jones misses when he tries to fire back. Jones witha series of overhand rights, a few of which land, but most of which get blocked. Again a flurry by Jones near the bell, but this time nothing comes even close to landing.

Brudov 10-9
Jones 96-94

Jones has switches to southpaw this round. Not sure why. He paws out with some bad right jabs, and the referee calls for the doctor to look at Brudov’s cut. Maybe he switched so he could target the cut better.

They come back out and Jones is still fighting southpaw. Just seems like a really strange time to make that switch. Brudov seems somewhat confounded by the switch in stance. He’s not getting shots off. The referee takes another look at Brudov’s cut and decides enough is enough.
