I'm really interested to see how boxing plays out at Kokugikan

I’ve been there for sumo a number of times, but it’s a bit odd. Other than the upper deck, there aren’t any seats – you just sit on pillows on the floor (and since it was built a long time ago, the spots were made for 5’3" pre-war Japanese people). If I happen to wake up in the middle of the night, I’ll try to catch this, but otherwise you guys have fun. I really hope it shows up on Youtube after. I have a feeling this will be a good one.

Morning all.

Come on Rendall!

Such were the days, still, hot, heavy, disappearing one by one into the past, as if falling into an abyss for ever open in the wake of the ship; and the ship, lonely under a wisp of smoke, held on her steadwast way black and smouldering in a luminous immensity, as if scorched by a flame flicked at her from a heaven without pity.

Haha!

It really is one of the great football rivalries. Look out for River Plate-Boca Juniors, Roma-Lazio and Barcelona-Real Madrid for the biggest football rivalries. No joking, fans regularly get seriously injured – I think 20 died a few years ago – at River-Boca, such is the rivalry. Its a crazy game.

I’m still bothered by using the terms “monster” power for a flyweight. Like a midget boxer who KO’s a bunch of midgets doesn’t really have killer power ok.

by Waldo Rastel on Oct 24, 2010 5:09 AM EDT up reply actions

For his weight, that is mini monster power! Its all relative, power to division. Obviously if you put him in with Wladimir, his power wouldn’t be “monster”; but you put him in with Rosas, and it is “monster” power. Whatever, the guy is bloody nasty. Really enjoyed watching it.

Gonzalez-Rosas R1

Gonzalez with a gorgeous left hook to the body to start the round proper about a minute in. Another nasty body shot at about 1:40 of the round. Vicious. Another nice body shot, and Gonzalez slips after they get their feet tangled. Good right to the jaw by Gonzalez, then a left again to the body. He looks extremely sharp. Rosas looks at least two levels below Gonzalez in the first round.

Right hand by Gonzalez. Good right by Rosas comes after, and now they’re warring! Big right by Gonzalez! Uppercut! Down goes Rosas durring a back-and-forth! He’s up and will fight on. Gonzalez going for the jugular when they continue. Down goes Rosas again on a combination!

He’s up, but he’s not on good feet. GONZALEZ COMES OUT, HARD BODY SHOTS, DOWN AND THAT IS IT!

Nishioka-Munroe R1

Couple of southpaws, so we’ll see if either has trouble against the mirror. Nishioka throwing the jab to start, Munroe looking to counter, it appears. Munroe does look very loose, not tight whatsoever. Munroe keeping a nice, tight defense to start, but Nishioka landing the better shots. Nothing huge, but Monroe is definitely on defense to start this fight. Now Munroe on the offensive late in the round. Nishioka throwing the jab, but not landing. Munroe stalking but has no openings. Nishioka takes the opening round, but a nice start for both, to be honest.

Nishioka-Munroe R2

Now Munroe pressing to start the opening round, as Nishioka is coming out aggressively but gets pushed back a little by Munroe. Nishioka with some nice body work, but Munroe comes right back at him. Left to the body by Nishioka. Two shots to the body by Munroe, who refuses to take a backward step. Left hand by Munroe upstairs, glancingly landing. Body shot by Nishioka. This is another good round in what is shaping up to be a very good fight. Left hand Nishioka, body shot Nishioka. Munroe with a little flurry and gets a good right hand in after a left to the body is mostly blocked.

Really good round. Munroe is fighting his fight, Nishioka is fighting his, and the styles and meshing.

Both men staying aggressive. Nishioka doing the flashier work, and now doing the full-on better work. Body shot by Nishioka, but still Munroe won’t step back, and lands back shots of his own. Left by Munroe, and a jab. But then there’s Nishioka throwing hard in return. Left hand by Nishioka. Left to the body by Nishioka. Munroe with a quick flurry. Another good round. Good, tactical, aggressive fight by both through three.

Munroe coming out fast, and Nishioka there to meet him. Now they’re gonna go again. This is not massive trading, but both guys are clearly here to fight. Munroe digging to the body. Body shot with the left by Nishioka. Munroe throws, Nishioka backs off, and resets. Nishioka breathing heavily. Back to the body by Nishioka. Munroe is really aggressive now. Good right hook by Munroe, just keeps throwing. Munroe’s defense has been very solid so far. Left hand by Munroe! Good shot! Munroe looks great this round. Body shot Nishioka, not all the way there. Now Nishioka opening up, but still getting mostly blocked. About a minute to go. Munroe with another good left. Nishioka back to the body, then upstairs. Munroe backing him down most of this round — another good left to the head. Great round for Munroe.

Munroe coming out VERY hard here in the fifth round. He might wind up leaving himself open to a good Nishioka left counter. And here comes Nishioka now! Left hands! One to the body! This is definitely a fight now. Good left by Nishioka hurts Munroe! Now Nishioka is unloading! Another left! Munroe might be in trouble, but he’s just ready to throw back! Nishioka with another hard left! Munroe eating shots to the body! Munroe coming back now! They tie up. This is a hell of a good fight.

Boy these guys are really going. Nishioka throwing HARD lefts to start the sixth round. He seems to have figured out Munroe as much as he’s going to — that is, Munroe is definitely still in this fight, but meeting a lot of adversity now. Nishioka is clearly aware that Munroe is not to be trifled with. Nishioka with a hard body shot, now going upstairs. Nishioka starting to have his way a bit — not without resistance from Munroe, but proving his superiority a bit, IMO. Munroe is just a hell of a good fighter, though. He earned this shot, and he’s earning it in the ring, too.

Munroe landing, but here comes Nishioka with a hard body shot! And another! He’s digging in to the body now! Munroe staying in there with him! He’s definitely feeling those blows, but not bowing yet. Left hand Nishioka. Good uppercut by Munroe gets in before Nishioka can land. Body shot by Nishioka after. Nishioka looking stronger and stronger — lands again to the body, and hard. Another one to the body. He’s tagging Munroe down there. Really good round for Nishioka.

Nishioka 10-9
Nishioka 68-65

What a good fight this is.

Nishioka’s a wonderful fighter to watch at times. His defense is shoddy, but offensively he is brilliant.

Nishioka-Munroe R8

Left to the body by Nishioka. Just hammering Munroe to the body now. Munroe just will not back down, but he’s getting beaten up inside. Good shot by Nishioka gets a rise from the crowd. Nishioka starting to really turn it on, but then Munroe lands a right hook and a left to the body. Long left by Munroe catches Nishioka moving back, so not a full shot in there. Another body shot by Nishioka. This was another competitive round, as all have been, but Nishioka wins another one. Munroe is there with him, but just that step behind.

Nishioka-Munroe R9

Munroe finally starting to look a bit tired. He’s really worked hard so far, and with not enough result. Nishioka with a left to the head. He’s really taken the momentum of this fight. Munroe is clearly tiring, I’d say. He’s just having trouble getting off first and his jab isn’t there anymore, and he’s been worn down by some great body work. Munroe is a good, valiant fighter, and if anything might move up in my 122-pound rankings even if he does lose this fight, as it appears he will. I’d favor him over Steve Molitor without a second thought at this point.

God, Munroe has fought his ass off, but to this point, Nishioka has simply been the better fighter. No shame in that — this was a closer round than the last few, but I thought clearly Nishioka’s.

Nishioka-Munroe R10

Munroe coming out stalking — just obviously stalking and looking to land some big shots. Three jabs and a body shot by Nishioka. Munroe just can’t quite keep up with Nishioka’s footwork. Hard right hook to the body by Nishioka. And another. Nishioka still landing to the body. Munroe getting desperate and has definitely been drained by that body work. Munroe with a body shot. Nishioka hurts Munroe! Munroe in trouble! 20 seconds to go! Nishioka going for it, but Munroe comes back!

Good body shot, now Nishioka hammering Munroe to the head! Munroe getting beaten up now. Nishioka is really on a roll, way stronger at this point, and just the better man. He’s just a better fighter. That’s all there is to it. Munroe has been good so far, just not good enough. Another left by Nishioka. Now a body shot once more. Munroe with a left upstairs! He just won’t give up. You have to admire his effort. He’s been as good as he can be. But he needs a miracle.

Munroe out with a left, then another glances Nishioka’s head. Munroe is going to go for it. Munroe with a nice left that hurts Nishioka a bit. Munroe throwing and throwing to start the round. Now Nishioka coming back hard! Big flurry by Nishioka! Munroe comes back, and then Nishioka bounces out. GOOD body shot by Nishioka hurts Munroe. Munroe firing, but still getting hit to the body. Nishioka throwing hard and landing with just under a minute to go! Nishioka hammering to the body! Now he’s going for the kill! Munroe throws back! He’s gassed hard in there. Nishioka with a left, Munroe trying to tie him up. Munroe cut now under the right eye. Nishioka with a left but it’s short. Munroe fighting, Nishioka fighting, and it’s over! Really good fight — mostly one-sided, but a really, really competitive fight.

I'm not sure how 'great' Nishioka is, to be honest.

He seems really good coming forward, but as OliGold said earlier, he is weak defensively, and a quicker guy than Rendall Munroe probably would have given him a whole lot to think about.

Munroe has many many things going for him, but lightning speed isn’t one of them.

And as for Munroe:

this was a really good performance, and I certainly don’t think any less of him for losing a tough, competitive fight to the consensus #1 in the division.

I’ve like Munroe for ages, and I’m really pleased that he got his shot, and I really feel he can be proud of his efforts in there.

I had it 118-111 Nishioka

I think the scoring is pretty irrelevant seen as it was a fairly emphatic win for Nish.
Adam Smith continues to lead the way for the “International Gimp of the Year” award.
He’s winning by miles.
I was quite disgusted by him saying that Jesus Chavez wasn’t on the same level as Jorge Linares and that Chavez had quit.
That was harsh and showed the idiot’s lack of knowledge of the sport as it is obvious to anyone who follows the sport closely that Chavez is years past his best and probably shot while Linares is a young man at or close to his peak.
Smith the simpleton was talking as if it was mad as a competitve fight.
Smith is a fool and nothing more than a glorified errand boy who has most likely sucked his way up to get where he has at Sky.
I have an intense dislike for the man.

Credit to Rendall though. He fought the best he could.
Nishioka was just too skilled and moved to the side every time Munroe tried to get him to the ropes for his inside work that he’s best at.
First time i’d really seen Nishioka apart from the odd youtube clip and i was quite impressed by his power, skills and smarts. His experience also shone through.
Munroe showed the good chin that he has in thge past and did well to see the full 12 rds with some of the shots he took.

John Rawling and the dreadful Smith really show themselves up regularly with their lack of insight.
Personally i think McGuigan is the only world class analyst we have who can really break down a fight and/or fighter and shows excellent judgement.
Other than him i don’t mind Darke,McCrory and Nelson and i think some of the young fighters like Jamie Moore and Nathan Cleverley have taken to it well.
Robert McCracken is one of our better trainers as you know but i don’t think the studio is the place for him judging by how he didn’t really have much to say on saturday night.

I think Johnny Nelson is really terrific in the studio. He’s not a puppet like so many guys allow themselves to become. Even when I disagree with his analysis of a fight or a fighter, I at least know he’s being honest, and I think he assesses young talent pretty well.
