BLH Continuous Quiz Thread

I was considering chucking together a massive list of quiz questions, and publishing them as a one-off quiz for a bit of fun. However, there are many other people out there with many more random, trivial and fun bits of knowledge than me, and as such I thought this would work better.

THE RULES:

Questions must not be posted as replies, they must start a new reply chain.

Answers to any question should be posted as replies to the question in er... question. :)

In case of any doubt as to who is right, the person posing the question will decide, but may be over-ruled if factually wrong by any member of site team.

If a question is too difficult or obscure, and no-one can answer it for a period of time, the user posting the question should post the answer as a reply, and then bask in the glory of being a boxing quiz/trivia God. (Only after a reasonable period of time has passed, though, give us a chance!!)

Any answers posted without hitting 'reply' will be deleted; likewise for questions posted as replies.

Using Google/Boxrec is not permitted. There is no way to govern this, but this is a bit of fun and using online research tools is not in the spirit of the game. It would also make you, y'know... kind of a loser.

FanPosts are user-created content written by community members of Bad Left Hook, and are generally not the work of our editors. Please do not source FanPosts as the work of Bad Left Hook.

Specifically (and this will kill the question, I think), it was something Leonard had that Duran didn’t. He said it was a really minor thing, but the fact he had it and Duran didn’t was a major factor in their respective performances.

No. Apparently Sugar Ray Leonard said that it was bloody cold in there that night,

and that his team having coincidently brought along a blanket to ringside was a key to his performance.

Duran was stalking around in corner between rounds, and was basically freezing up, while Leonard was wrapped in this blanket between rounds, sat there like a nun. He said it was obvious the cold had an effect on Duran, and Duran’s corner didn’t have a blanket, or a towel, or anything really, to wrap him in. Leonard also said it wasn;t preplanned to have the blanket in his own corner, it was pretty lucky, but he said it was a major factor in how the fight turned out.

Why are these incidents particularly memorable?

The "Fan Man," James Miller, landed during the 1993 heavyweight fight
between Riddick Bowe and Evander Holyfield. When the lines of his paraglide
tangled, he hit the canvas, and one of his legs got caught in the top rope of the
ring. Fans dragged him down and gave him a beating. After his release from the
hospital, he was charged with dangerous flying and released on bail. As it turned
out, he was the only one who got knocked out, as Holyfield beat Bowe by a
majority descision.

In 1997, Oliver McCall suffered an emotional breakdown in his heavyweight
title fight with Lennox Lewis. This was altogether a chilling memory, but not
altogether unexpected.

Also in 1997, Mike Tyson was disqualified for twice biting Holyfield’s ears,
claiming he was retaliating because of head butting by Holyfield

by Phill on Oct 28, 2010 4:40 AM EDT up reply actions

I know that Mills Lane DQ'd Tyson, then rescinded the decision due to Holyfield asking him not to.

Then Lane told Holyfield if he did it again, Lane would DQ him. So Tyson did, and Lane did.

This might have something to do with fights having their original result changed. Something like-

Fan Man incident fight was officially called a NC, but then it was decided to carry on instead.

-McCall fight might have been called a DQ or something due to McCall refusing to fight or defend himself, but was changed to a TKO for Lewis.

-Tyson/Holyfield originally a DQ3, then changed to DQ4? Due to the third round ending? Hmmm….. I don’t think that’s right, but kind of thinking out loud here.

Funny how someone effectively has two nicknames...

One all encompassing, “The Fen Tiger”, and another which sits like a middle name, ‘Boy’.

My parents told me he told them he was training again (they live about half a mile from him and drink in the same pub) and asked if I wanted to go over and spar with him at his house. They said I could stay at their house afterwards so I wouldn’t have to go home if I didn’t want to. My response was “even at his age, I reckon if I go in with him I won’t be staying at your house, I’ll be waking up tomorrow in hospital!!”

Wow! That’d be some experience. Dave Boy Green was my first ever boxing idol. He also competed on the original ‘Superstars’ with judo champ Brian Jacks back in the 70’s when I was just a nipper. They didn’t call him the Fen Tiger for nothing – what a fighter!

I also do not agree with this.

I mean, obviously Louis was a fantastic fighter, but ‘best puncher’ and ‘best fighter’, while not being mutually exclusive by any means, are certainly not the same thing, either.

I’d much rather take a shot from Louis than Lewis, for example. Or Tyson. Or Tua. P4P, I don’t necessarily think Louis was a better ‘puncher’ than Prince Naseem Hamed, or Julian Jackson, or even someone like Marcos Maidana or Randall Bailey. And those are just guys from the (relatively) modern era. There absolutely must have been other guys throughout history who were better punchers than Louis, even if he was a much much better fighter than them. I mean, did Louis hit harder than Shavers? No way, no how, not in my book.

I just checked this out, and Hamed's record makes funny reading.

http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=004462&cat=boxer

Where did the WBO belt go, if it wasn’t at stake in the Barrera fight? (It isn’t listed on Barrera’s record either… and there is no mention of either guy being stripped of it)

How was the IBO title still vacant if Barrera had already beaten Hamed for it? (Yet again, there is no mention of Barrera either defending it, vacating it or being stripped of it.)

How come I remember the Calvo fight being for the European belt, but Boxrec has it (for Hamed’s second fight in a row) for the ‘vacant IBO title’?

Have Boxrec screwed the pooch here?

And more importantly, where’s my dinner?

I just looked through Barrera's record too....

It’s weird that he also beat Morales the year after beating Hamed, and that was for the WBC featherweight strap, yet there is no mention of that strap further on in his record either.

Did he defend? Vacate? Did the belts just disappear up Jose Sulaiman’s ass? You decide!!

Scott just emailed me with the info on the whole lot.
Hamed vacated the WBO title on September 30, 2000, a month after defending it against Augie Sanchez. Hamed at the time was tired of boxing politics, having been forced to vacate the IBF and WBC titles in the past due to commitment to the WBO. After beating Hamed, Barrera vacated the IBO title.

As for the European belt, Calvo had won the European championship on May 25, 2001, but gave it up on January 25, 2002, four months before fighting Hamed.

I was certain that Hamed’s last fight was for the European belt. Apparently not. So he went out as a World Champion, then? lol!!

Nah,

The knock on Hearns in the first Leonard fight was his inability to tie Ray up and clinch when he needed to clear his head. In the same way Bruno would freeze when he got badly buzzed and offer an easy target.

William and Sosa inflicted terrible punishment on each other prompting referee Ron Lipton to stop the fight. To save both fighters for another day; the fight was stopped. Clearly, neither warrior could continue the mutual bloodletting (though Sosa complained bitterly, albeit wrongly that he was still ready to go). It was a rare "double knockout," which officially was ruled a technical draw. Sosa suffered a fractured cheekbone while The Prince sustained a nasty orbital eye cut.

That said, Mickey Vann was always good, in my opinion, and never really gets the accolades he deserves.

Which prominent fighter legally changed his first name to his boxing nickname, and made his former first name his middle name?

This one’s a layup, I think.

Probably one of the old, old old timers

Of the post 1880’s fighters, I’d guess Jim Jefferies, who had less than 25 fights. That Spanish-Jewish fighter from the 1700’s (Ignacio Mendoza I think was his name) only had five or so officially recorded fights, but way back then people didn’t keep track too well.

Nice work JC!

He lost back to back fights (both by TKO) in Boston 1978. Hagler reckoned Finnegan was the toughest man he ever fought. Kevin beat a young Sibbo but lost three close 15 rounders to Minter,

I’ll also go through this thread and try to get all the questions that weren’t answered and include them too.
