Saturday Open Thread: Prizefighter and Whatever Else
We're not going to do live round-by-round coverage today, but those who are watching Prizefighter or anything else today can feel welcome to use this thread and get a discussion going. You can talk about whatever you want in this thread (keep it as clean as normal, of course) -- football, basketball, hockeyball, baseball playoffs, the state of boxing today, upcoming fights, whatever. I'm gonna catch the big Michigan-Michigan State game (I bleed blue, but the Spartans should win by a couple of scores) and relax in this final week before thank God, the boxing schedule picks back up to any degree next Friday.

Anyone got any leanings for Prizefighter?
I’m on Sprott, think this format will suit him down to a tee and I think if his sister hadn’t died before the last one of these we might’ve been spared all of this Audley Harrison mess that has developed since his win.
I expect one of the nobodies to win, but if it’s a name guy, it’ll be Sprott.

I laid a triple on nobody
All the names are beyond shot at this point. Could still pull it out, but these guys really shouldn’t be boxing anymore.

I think Skelton or Sprott deserve to be clear favourites but the rest of the field is wide open. The prices were big so i thought i’d have a few quid on Danny Hughes at 14-1.
He’s got the experience of being in one before,is still young and is a big, tall lad.
I thought he looked ok in the last one and at those prices thought it was was worth a bet.
It was between him and Declan Timlin for me,who was 11-1 but Timlin hasn’t fought for 2 years and is pretty small for a heavy nowadays.
Yes
I thought Hughes looked decent in the last one, if he actually gave a fuck he looks like he might have something but unfortunately he looks to be a white, ginger version of Carl Baker..
Sprott
has been notoriously inconsistent his whole career and often just doesn’t turn up,doesn’t fight at all.For that reason i went with Skelton in the BB pick em game but then Skelton might well have shot his bolt now and Sprott might be gearing up for one last shot at a decent level fight.Skello has beaten Sprott twice though, albeit at the longer distance.
I can’t say i would be confident in picking any of em to be honest. That’s why i thought it was wotrth a wager.
I don't mean to namedrop (I do)
But Skelton is a good family friend and if he wins I’ll be really happy so I’ve got two horses in he and Sprott, should make for decent viewing if not of the highest quality
Good evening, all.
Nice to see Adam Smith isn’t commentating, and that we’ve got Ian Darke back in the box. Rooting for Skelton to pull through – he’s always made for pretty good fights, and just strikes me as a really nice bloke.

Adams looks teriffied in there. Del Boy might have been a bit hyperbolic in his descriptions of Adams’ ‘talents’!

He seems in pretty decent nick, at least condition-wise. As long as one of Skelton or Sprott wins it, I’m not too bothered right now.

Heard a bit about McBride not taking this too seriously
Although I don’t know how much the rastafarian Danny Williams has done in training I’ve had a very small wager on him to take out one of the greatest heavyweights of the modern era
McBride
looked out of shape to me when they introduced them all.Mind you i’ve never seen him fight before so maybe that is his normal look?
I know what you mena with Skelton but his stamina is not usually a big problem,or is it?(i haven’t seen his last few fights).
Listening to Sky wax lyrical about McBride, you really would believe he’s the greatest heavyweight since Ali.

Cor, Sheridan is such a monster. Just released a country album, I think – 22 stone prop by day, country singer by night!

Yeah. He is 6’4, 6’5 though, which is pretty enormous for a prop.

Thats a big guy.
Union forwards are bigger than League in general,i think.
I know there’s no one in league that weighs that 22 stone anyway.
Saying that Paul Anderson (prop) was about 6’2" and 20 stone when he played at Bradford though.

Bloody awful viewing. Neither guy looked good, and I’d be surprised if Skelton doesn’t make pretty light work of either one.

I think it’ll be tight. Lots of mauling a one or two decent punches wins the round, could go either way I think.

Well, McPhilbin looked pretty good. Timlin is clearly finished, but McPhilbin could be a serious player in this whole thing.

Wonder if Darke was given a swan song
He’s going to be doing the USA/Colombia soccer game in Pennsylvania this Tuesday.
I don’t watch Prizefighter so how does this tournament work? Is it like one gigantic tournament done in a night?

Sweet. So what happens in the case of injury?

Unlucky mate. Hughes needs to hit the treadmill and he could do something domestically. He’s no worse than someone like Olabamiwo
So is Hughes. Sprott’s a better fighter, but its okay viewing. Horrible cut, stoppage shortly methinks.

Good to see
Barry McGuigan on board.I wonder if he’s with Sky for the long term now or what?I hope so.
Now they just need to offload Adam Smith and there will be no more complaints from me :)
Adam Smith is a complete gimp
Looks and sounds as if he’d have more fun at a night of bowls than a night of boxing
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. McGuigan and Nelson in the studio is a pretty good duo; they’re about the only two pundits whose opinions I really respect.

Bunce was on that prizefighter highlights show the other day, bit random seeing as he’s never worked for them before (to my knowledge)
I know i have given Bunce soem stick in the past and i will never be his biggest fan but at least he knows what he’s talking about(for the most part:).
I just didn’t like when he would seemingly favour his mates and was biased rtowards the Brit fighters when he was on Setanta.
I was suprised to see him on Sky too. though
I remember him interviewing Ola after the Maccarinelli win, and basically arguing with Ola that it was a fluke. It was quite embarrassing, to be honest.

Yeah I saw that. I do like Bunce, but if Sky were to make him a regular feature, he’d really grind on my nerves. The show didn’t look like it was produced by Sky, to be honest, which leads me to think it was some sort of Bunce DVD he’s doing, or something like that. Not quite sure.

RE Sky announcement of Munroe-Nishioka.
I am really, really excited for that fight. Provided Munroe’s chin stands up to Nishioka, that could be a very good fight.

here you go so far

heavyweight Kevin McBride 34(29)-7(6)-1 W Franklin Egobi 15(10)-3(0)-0 SD 3 3
heavyweight Shane McPhilbin 2(2)-1(0)-0 W Declan Timlin 7(4)-0(0)-0 TKO 2 3

McBride’s sheer size is doing for Skelton here. All this leaning – coupled with his huge frame and ridiculous weight – is leaving Skelton exhausted. That was just about the worst piece of refereeing I’ve ever seen.

Yep. Skelton really should have been stopped, to be honest – he was out on his feet. Still, was an okay ish fight (searching for positives on what’s been a pretty rubbish show).

Yeah
Sprott and that McPhilbin lad have been the only two to show even a bit of actual boxing skills, imo.
I think they saw it wrong to be honest but my BB pick is still going! :)
I now think Sprott will beat him though. He must be knackered now.
Skelton’s a good bloke, but blimey his maths is poor! How did he think he’d won 29-28 while losing a 10-8 round!

If you look at my site on www.tedsares.com, you will see a photo of me standing next to McBride and I am a very big man. Look at how big he is.
A MONSTER
Pray for Nick Charles
I fought from lightweight to light heavyweight as I grew during the 50's. My best weight was 175-178 depending on the venue.
I am 6 feet

Sprotty
had a really confident look on his face in his fight and will still be fresh. His size could be an issue but i think i’ll have to go with him.
That’s the kiss of death now for all the Sprott backers :)
Part of that is his own fault though. He has put in some terrible “performances”.
He looks OK tonight though.
Don’t really mind. Like them both.

I am starting to really, really, really hope that Audley KO’s Haye.
Haye is a disgarceful hype machine and Harrison will be extremely motivated to prove people wrong and achieve what he set out to do.
I can’t really see it happening but stranger things have happened.
I know they won’t be getting my PPV money.Replay fight if ever i saw one.
Haven’t seen anything. They will most liekly rely on the mainstream buys just looking at the main event. Not sure how they will work it in with Pac v Marg unless they don’t show that on moral grounds. :)
That’ll be much later on though won’t it. Isn’t it a sellout at the arena? I can’t believe it if it is. I’m going to the UFC at the weekend in London and the difference in value between the two is ridiculous
Yeah, non stop Smith. No stop domestic fights.
When are Sky gonna show some real world class fights???
