Saturday Open Thread: Prizefighter and Whatever Else

The fourth edition of Prizefighter Heavyweights is live later today.

We're not going to do live round-by-round coverage today, but those who are watching Prizefighter or anything else today can feel welcome to use this thread and get a discussion going. You can talk about whatever you want in this thread (keep it as clean as normal, of course) -- football, basketball, hockeyball, baseball playoffs, the state of boxing today, upcoming fights, whatever. I'm gonna catch the big Michigan-Michigan State game (I bleed blue, but the Spartans should win by a couple of scores) and relax in this final week before thank God, the boxing schedule picks back up to any degree next Friday.

Anyone got any leanings for Prizefighter?

I’m on Sprott, think this format will suit him down to a tee and I think if his sister hadn’t died before the last one of these we might’ve been spared all of this Audley Harrison mess that has developed since his win.

I expect one of the nobodies to win, but if it’s a name guy, it’ll be Sprott.

I laid a triple on nobody

All the names are beyond shot at this point. Could still pull it out, but these guys really shouldn’t be boxing anymore.

I think Skelton or Sprott deserve to be clear favourites but the rest of the field is wide open. The prices were big so i thought i’d have a few quid on Danny Hughes at 14-1.
He’s got the experience of being in one before,is still young and is a big, tall lad.
I thought he looked ok in the last one and at those prices thought it was was worth a bet.
It was between him and Declan Timlin for me,who was 11-1 but Timlin hasn’t fought for 2 years and is pretty small for a heavy nowadays.

by Matt Mosley on Oct 9, 2010 2:39 PM EDT reply actions

2 1/2 years for Timlin.

by Matt Mosley on Oct 9, 2010 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes

I thought Hughes looked decent in the last one, if he actually gave a fuck he looks like he might have something but unfortunately he looks to be a white, ginger version of Carl Baker..

by LtfcPete on Oct 9, 2010 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I can see that myself. :)
A lot of it with these short tourneys comes down to who’s motivated the most and who’s trained correctly for the explosive short amount of rounds.

by Matt Mosley on Oct 9, 2010 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

True

Sprott is always in decent nick, kept up a good workrate for the full 12 vs Audley just a few months ago that’s why I go with him. We’ll see anyway!

by LtfcPete on Oct 9, 2010 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Sprott

has been notoriously inconsistent his whole career and often just doesn’t turn up,doesn’t fight at all.For that reason i went with Skelton in the BB pick em game but then Skelton might well have shot his bolt now and Sprott might be gearing up for one last shot at a decent level fight.Skello has beaten Sprott twice though, albeit at the longer distance.
I can’t say i would be confident in picking any of em to be honest. That’s why i thought it was wotrth a wager.

by Matt Mosley on Oct 9, 2010 2:54 PM EDT reply actions

I don't mean to namedrop (I do)

But Skelton is a good family friend and if he wins I’ll be really happy so I’ve got two horses in he and Sprott, should make for decent viewing if not of the highest quality

by LtfcPete on Oct 9, 2010 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

No,thats interesting to know.I’m quite looking forward to this one(and i never thoguht i’d say that when Skelton is involved :)

Good evening, all.

Nice to see Adam Smith isn’t commentating, and that we’ve got Ian Darke back in the box. Rooting for Skelton to pull through – he’s always made for pretty good fights, and just strikes me as a really nice bloke.

He seems in pretty decent nick, at least condition-wise. As long as one of Skelton or Sprott wins it, I’m not too bothered right now.

Heard a bit about McBride not taking this too seriously

Although I don’t know how much the rastafarian Danny Williams has done in training I’ve had a very small wager on him to take out one of the greatest heavyweights of the modern era

by LtfcPete on Oct 9, 2010 3:29 PM EDT reply actions

McBride

looked out of shape to me when they introduced them all.Mind you i’ve never seen him fight before so maybe that is his normal look?
I know what you mena with Skelton but his stamina is not usually a big problem,or is it?(i haven’t seen his last few fights).

by Matt Mosley on Oct 9, 2010 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Not usually but I thought he gassed a bit against Rogan when I thought he had the fight in hand and he apparently looked his age against Swaby last time out

Listening to Sky wax lyrical about McBride, you really would believe he’s the greatest heavyweight since Ali.

I know i have given Bunce soem stick in the past and i will never be his biggest fan but at least he knows what he’s talking about(for the most part:).

McBride’s sheer size is doing for Skelton here. All this leaning – coupled with his huge frame and ridiculous weight – is leaving Skelton exhausted. That was just about the worst piece of refereeing I’ve ever seen.
