Tonight at 9pm EST on HBO pay-per-view, Manny Pacquiao makes his return to the ring to face controversial Mexican star Antonio Margarito. The two will vie for the WBC 154-pound belt, which would give Pacquiao a dubious claim to being an "eight-division world champion."

BTW, undercard starts airing on ESPN3 at "7 pm"

The time being in quotes because they seem to always start about a half hour later than they say they will over there. For those who don’t get ESPN3, you can probably also catch a stream at Top Rank’s website.

Politics over promotion I assume

I believe he was born in one place and grew up in another.
The new hometown must serve him back home.

24/7 has completed its last show. The insults have been exchanged. The apologies have been made and accepted. The training camps have now closed down. The weights have been recorded. The opinions have been opined. The hype has ended. Haye has waxed Audley. The smoke is now clearing. LET’S GET IT ON!!

Richie Mepranum wins by split decision

I had it a draw, but I won’t complain about 58-56 Mepranum. Decent fight, both guys went balls to the wall for the last 30 seconds. I doubt Mepranum will ever be any better than he is right now though. Not enough power, not enough speed. He could improve technically quite a bit, but even then he’ll have a hard time making it to championship level.

I do get where you’re coming from though. I’ve nailed it in my head not to take any bait in boxing, and that any “injury” or “floored in sparring” article that pops up in the media should be ignored. These “distractions” happen all the time in Pacquiao’s camp, it’s just that this time it’s being used as another way to spin the fight.

by Dafs on Nov 13, 2010 8:16 PM EST up reply actions

you think margaritos actually mentally there to fight and win or is he just posturing dafs?

by boxzilla on Nov 13, 2010 8:18 PM EST up reply actions

It’s tough to call. I think he’s going in with a gameplan which is not based purely on survival, but I think Arum has some guidelines laid down (contract stipulations like the bullshit 150 pound catchweight) that has already played with his mind and made him settle for the pension.

I must say, Arum’s job of promoting Pacquiao is nearly on par as the handling and marketing of De La Hoya. Genius.

by Dafs on Nov 13, 2010 8:24 PM EST up reply actions

ya its interesting …. paul got to me and has me questioning the validity of this fight even more then i already was

by boxzilla on Nov 13, 2010 8:27 PM EST up reply actions

Everything Paul says about Pacquiao/Arum must be taken with a pinch of salt. But I do tend to take a similar, if slightly less biased view on the situation. But I do tend to agree that by the time a fighter steps in the ring with Pacquiao, his chances of getting out there victorious is the same as Andre Berto selling out the Cowboys Stadium next year. Zilch.

by Dafs on Nov 13, 2010 8:33 PM EST up reply actions

your right … all i hope is that this is a real fight. and margo doesnt pull what fraudly did earlier today.

by boxzilla on Nov 13, 2010 8:41 PM EST up reply actions

What’s even more suspicious is that Haye said that he had a bet down that he would win in the 3rd round, which could explain why the fight was fought at a Gabe Brown pace for the opening two rounds. That shows that Haye was carrying Harrison, and displays how much of a mismatch the fight was from the start. Hell, somebody tell the conspiracy theorist in me to shut up, or for me to stop drinking.

by Dafs on Nov 13, 2010 8:45 PM EST up reply actions

no conspiracy there … it was clearly stated so drink away

violation??

Could that admission get DH in trouble with the Boxing Board?

by Iron Beach on Nov 13, 2010 8:47 PM EST up reply actions

It’s a stupid comment to make after a fight anyway. I understand pre-fight, because it helps to generate interest and messes with the opponent’s mind, but post-fight Haye gets nothing except for sketchy publicity out of a remark like that.

by Dafs on Nov 13, 2010 8:51 PM EST up reply actions

Not to mention

it pretty much is an admission that he knew he was fighting a shot fighter with no chance…wonder how his fans that apent big bucks to attend will feel about that?

by Iron Beach on Nov 13, 2010 8:54 PM EST up reply actions

As far as trouble, I doubt the WBA would want to risk losing a 3% purse cut from a potenital Klitschko – Haye fight down the line.

Rios-Lowther R1

It’s Jim, Max and Manny tonight. Their best team, amazingly.

Rios shoots a left hook, misses. Rios is clearly out of shape — Max even calls him “fat and out of shape.” They’re pretending that Rios had more than a couple weeks to get ready for this fight, which is pretty frustrating. Not a lot of action in the first 1:30. Rios opens with a right to the body. Left hook by Rios. Lowther landing some sharp shots, right and left hands. Rios with a left to the body. Left hook by Lowther. Both guys throwing hard now. Lowther takes a left to the chin.

Rios 10-9

Closer than it really should have been, but I thought he landed the harder blows.

Rios-Lowther R1

Lederman gave the first to Lowther, and it’s more than defensible.

Right to the body by Lowther. Rios with a good little flurry. Left hook by Lowther. Rios landing some good shots to the body. Good left snaps Lowther’s head back. Rios getting in there. Hard right lands, but not totally clean. Rios having a really nice round, even though he’s not as strong as he usually would be. Lowther actually fighting alright, but I think that’s a case of conditioning. He’s in good shape, Rios isn’t, and Rios is still just plain out-fighting him.

Rios 10-9
Rios 20-18

Rios-Lowther R3

Really not a bad fight so far, should mention that.

Lowther moving and punching now, trying to keep RIos out of range to open up. But Rios is getting right at him, because he just stays going forward. He won’t take a step back. Rios eats body work, but walks through it. Good right by Rios. Jab snaps Rios’ head back again. Rios is simply a better fighter, even out of shape and on short notice. Rios starting to really back Lowther down this round, and starting to dominate the fight. Good body work from Rios, always going at Lowther, and this is exactly why people like Brandon Rios as a fighter.

Rios-Lowther R4

Lowther is doing the best he can here, but Rios is just all over him. Even when he’s not doing much offensively, he’s messing with Lowther defensively. Lowther is landing clean shots, but he can’t back Rios down to save his life. Lowther landing clean shots. Actually might be taking this round, but then Rios starts landing good shots and backing Lowther down again, and might be taking this at the end.

Rios 10-9
Rios 40-36

It’s just a case of Lowther not being able to hurt Rios.

Rios-Lowther R5

Lowther corner talked about stopping it between rounds, but he comes back out.

Lowther trying to stay out of Rios’ wheelhouse as much as he can, which just means trying to stay the hell away from Rios. Rios hurts him with a big shot! Lowther wobbles, doesn’t fall, and tries to hang on. Rios starting to really tag him and take over this fight. This probably won’t last past this round. BIG SHOT! And it’s stopped!

Rigondeaux swings a hard left and misses to start. Couple of southpaws, and Cordoba has the height, but we’ll see what happens. First real test of Rigondeaux’s career. Cordoba not backing away from Rigondeaux, really. Both shoot right hooks. Nobody taking advantage in the first two minutes. Pretty tight first round, so I’ll wimp out. Didn’t think anyone took advantage.

Cordoba just is not as aggressive as I thought he would be, as Brick said between rounds. He’s just not doing much, and Rigondeaux is happy with that, because it means he doesn’t have to work very hard to look better than Cordoba. Not much of a thriller so far, but it is what it is.

Rigondeaux-Cordoba R5

Rigondeaux and Cordoba just… the styles are clashing, and it’s odd that Rigondeaux won’t keep going to the body, even though Cordoba has shown a weakness there. What we’ve got his a hyper-talented fighter against a pretty good fighter with guts. I like Ricardo Cordoba, but he’s just not on Rigondeaux’s level, and it’s no shot at Cordoba. Few guys are on Rigondeaux’s level as far as pure talent. I’d take him over anyone at 122, which might sound crazy, but hey. Toshiaki Nishioka is 34, then there’s Ryol Li Lee, etc.

Rigondeaux using his boxing, using his amateur style, and just, as Manny puts it, ticking off the click. Sadly he’s still landing more and better shots than Cordoba. Rigondeaux-Cordoba R\9

This is getting to the point where Rigondeaux is, frankly, “running.” I HATE throwing that term around. I really do. But he wants nothing to do with Cordoba, and it’s very obvious. This is saying a lot about Guillermo Rigondeaux, and not all of it is great.

I'll be honest

I didn’t make this fight as one-sided on paper as you implied. Then again, I really rate Ricardo Cordoba.

Rigondeaux still moving, moving, moving, moving. Landing pot shots, but moving, moving, moving. Cordoba stalking, sort of. Body shot by Cordoba. Little right hook by Rigondeaux on a counter. The clear fact is this: He’s much better than Cordoba.

JSK starting to land some thudding body shots. Jones is on his bike, he’s not back from that incredible and possibly dumb display of punching in Rd 2. JSK pressing on him and taking the round through the first two minutes. Jones is EXHAUSTED. JSK throwing while he’s bleeding! That’s a good amount of blood coming out from JSK, but Jones is totally out of it and JSK is still in this fight. JSK pushing him back easily.

Good right by Jones, but it’s still JSK pushing the action and taking this fight where he wants it to go. Jones doesn’t have much power left, and JSK is no chump. Jones with a couple good shots, though. Maybe he’s getting there. Body shot by JSK. Body and head shots by JSK. Jones throwing now, but JSK still out-fighting him overall. Good 1-2 by JSK. And now he backs him down again. Jones with a little flurry, but JSK right there with him.

Kell Brook has never fought anyone on JSK's level, sadly

But the only reason JSK is even competitive is that Jones punched himself out. Alfonso Gomez pretty much routed this guy.

Jones-Soto Karass R9

Boy, I like Mike Jones, but he’s flat-out losing this fight. Just losing this fight. They’re going to take a look at JSK’s cuts — and nothing comes of it. Jones waking up a bit after that break, and starting to land some shots and taking the momentum. JSK making a charge with 40 seconds to go now. But Jones landing some counter shots in return and starting to take this round over in a somewhat dominant fashion, despite JSK’s body shots. I give this round to Jones, but he’s still behind.

Jones 10-9
Soto Karass 87-84

Gamesmanship running high. Now Margarito camp is complaining about Manny’s wraps.

Roach has been demanding a urinalysis prior to the fight

Margarito also complaining about the way that Roach wrapped Pacquiao’s hands

The fight will go on despite the controversy. Texas will conduct a urinalysis after the fight on both men.

I’ll have a quick story on this controversy in the locker rooms. Roach accusing Margarito of using Ephedra, a stimulant.

Jones-Soto Karass R10

Jones showing more as the fight chugs along, showing plenty of heart. JSK having a really rough time this round, though having small moments. Jones is clawing his way back into this fight while the HBO team, as usual, is four rounds behind.

Jones 10-9

Brutal beat down, but Margo showed tons of heart and may have gotten a bit of redemption

in so doing. Manny is the greatest thing I have ever seen in a ring.

I think so. And the reason is that he ALWAYS comes prepared to do his best. Something Ali and Sugar Ray Robinson failed to do.

That’s why I say “ever.” I never saw “Hammering Hank” and I awlays thought Aaron Pryor was special, but Manny’s improvement as he moved up and his ability to use everything a fighter can use to the max cinches it for me.

Have you seen better?

I haven’t, but my age range puts me out of appreciating Robinson’s greatness as fully as I could. This fight, which seemed set up as a farce, actually became something special, though, and I can easily say Pacquiao’s the most special fighter I’ve born witness to in my lifetime.

Yeah. Everytime I think he has met his matc, he shocks me. Christ. Margo looked so much bigger in there tonight, but

it didn’t mean a thing. What I need to do now is figure out how many of the 8 titles involved catch weights.

Or am I wrong? There was a title involved in the Cotto fight, right?

He is one of the greatest performers in any sport I have ever witnessed.
Easily in the same class as Ali and Jordan.

When you consider what God gave him to start, his size….and where he is today….I find it hard to think of anyone who has climbed to higher heights.

We are blessed to have seen what we have seen from this man.

Oh, I think he surpasses Ali. Manny is always prepared and in great condition. Thta's not something

you can say about Ali—who was frequently sloppy and lucky to win several of his fights. Manny has more dimensions as well.

By best comparison would be Pep and. of course Hammering Hank, but I give the nod to Manny at this point,

Margo rugged and game,

but also one-dimensional and easy to hit…. Margo does come to rumble, however, he can’t box for spit… Tony M. can still compete at 148 to 154 with ease as a contender, but he needs to be selective in finding slow, plodding brawlers who will stand and trade with his azz…. A savvy boxer with finess will always bother and trouble him greatly…. WORD!

NOTE:

I really doubt that team Packy will ever again venture up at 150 pounds in the future…. “The Packer” is best suited for fights contracted no higher than 147 pounds… TRUTH!!

Berto’s unworthy, and Mosley should probably retire himself, fond as I am. Khan would be a fun fight, actually, but the trainer conflict, and the fact that they’ve sparred together and like each other, has to prevent it. Pac-May, on the other hand, is better off as a dream fight than a reality, stylistically, so much as I still want resolution there, I’ve moved on. (And guess who really loses, historically, with it not happening?)

From my Margarito article from a little while ago:
Sometimes you just have to allow yourself some irrational fandom, or so I am now telling myself as justification for my feelings toward Margarito. He now is my boxing equivalent of the girl you know is so bad for you, who you know should be left in the past, but you still secretly want her to call and ask to see you. You can hate her, you can pretend you’re deliberating over whether you will accept her invitation to spend a night with her, and you can refuse to admit to anyone else that you actually want to see her again, but there was once something that made you sit up and pay attention when she walked into a room, and even if she cheated on you, if she treated you like shit and even if you know that having her in your life is a really bad idea, you still want her, even if only to know if she still has that ability to make you feel the way you once did, even if really it’s the feeling that she once inspired that you crave rather than actually her. I want to see Antonio Margarito fight again, and my gut tells me I want to see all those things once more that made me a fan. I want to see amazing resilience, and guts, and the ability to stare down a rhino, and Margarito once made me feel awe when I watched him fight as a result of his encapsulation of those characteristics. My head wants to see Manny Pacquiao beat the shit out of him, but my gut just wants him to be there, to see if he can produce that feeling of awe one more time.

Well done, Mr Margarito. I was genuinely amazed and gratified that you made it to the final bell. Great resilience.

Only thing was, as much as he could have stared down a rhino, Manny Pacquaio ain’t no rhino….

Now, Toni, you’ve given me that one more night of appreciation for some truly remarkable attributes: please retire now, andleave this as your (partial/slight) redemption.
