Which is the best trilogy of all time?

Boxing fans have had the great pleasure across the decades of seeing some amazing fights, with great fighters leaving it all in the ring. However, some guys do this more than once, and we even end up with a trilogy of great fights in some special cases. I was thinking earlier today about which of the best trilogies I have seen would get my vote, and just decided to put it to a more general audience.

I'll apologize now for a few of things:

1. I'm almost certain to forget at least one trilogy I should include, and this is something I regret in advance, if such a thing can even really happen.

2. I'm not counting Vasquez/Marquez IV as part of their saga. I'm just not.

3. I'm far too lazy to put up links to all of the fights included. I'm sure that most are on Youtube, and if not the others can be found elsewhere.

4. I'm not discounting fight series that went more than 3 fights, such as Robinson/LaMotta. They include trilogies, and therefore deserve consideration as fight series.

5. I'm not including Jones/Tarver. No way, no how, is Antonio Tarver getting on my list....

Right: to the poll. I suppose there are many ways to view this question, and you could answer based on cultural context, relevance to the sport, historical nostalgia, quality of fights/fighters, which one you personally just like more, which you'd be most likely to put on for a beer/boxing night, or even just which one you've watched the most. It's your call, because all of those things add up to making something 'great'.

Enjoy!

Great Fanpost

I would have loved to have gone for Holyfield v Bowe,Vasquez v Marquez or Gatti v Ward but in the end,for both quality and star power i had to go Ali v Frazier, even though the 2nd one was pretty boring.
Some great trilogies listed there though and it’s not easy for me to pick just one.

Also

some of the old classics i have only limted knowledge about.
I know Zale v Graziano is up there with the best though.

Great idea for a fanpost

And will look to refresh my memory/gain a view of some of the old ones later. Naturally the Vazquez-Marquez trilogy is the one I know best, and good point on not counting the fourth one.

It’s the only one where all three fights were FOTY quality.

Yup.

I decided on Griffith-Paret instead, but at that point I didn’t realise I could have more than 10 options, and forgot to add the Benvenuti-Griffith one when I did realise I could basically do as I pleased.

I would guess that Benvenuti's the best Italian boxer of all time

Not counting the many Italians who were born or fought in the US, of course! Those Griffiths fight take me back. Great time in the 60s for the ‘middle’ weight divisions, Welter to Light-Heavy. Griffiths, Tiger, Benvenuti, Foster, et al.

Yes

but i think it’s fair to say that Ali v Frazier was part of a much deeper and higher quality heavyweight division than was the super bantamweight division of Vasquez v Marquez.
5 or 6 of those on the list (inc the 2 mentioned) rate very closely together at the top though, imo.

by Matt Mosley on Nov 18, 2010 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

RE;My vote for Ali v Frazier.I think 1 +3 were so good that they make up a lot for 2 being mediocre.
I mean "The Fight of the Century and “The Thrilla In Manilla” are two of the best fights ever,at any weight, imo.

by Matt Mosley on Nov 18, 2010 5:12 PM EST up reply actions

2 isn’t so much mediocre as just bad, which is why I couldn’t vote for it….Ali just kept his distance, and accordingly, nothing happened. I took the trilogy thing seriously and went Vaz-Marq. Three great fights, all with a different character. The fourth fight is their ‘The Phantom Menace.’

by El Destruyo on Nov 18, 2010 9:08 PM EST up reply actions

I could not agree more.

There are great trilogies….and then there is the greatest.

Two was a place holder…but One and Three was as greeat and as meaningful as any two fights in boxing history. Lewis and Schmeling included.

It was

about as devastating a KO as i have seen and any mention of a rubber match has surely got to be looked at in no less than a year when Williams has had chance to rebuild.
I think he will go back down to 154,maybe even 147 now though where they don’t hit as hard.

Much of what can be written about South African boxing can be found in the drama that unfolded in the four great fights between Brian Mitchell and the late Jacob "Dancing Shoes" Morake

Morake and Mitchell had fought a total of 34 rounds, but this time Mitchell stopped the game Morake in the twelfth and final round. Morake had taken a significant amount of punishment in the fiercely contested fight. A dehydrated Morake collapsed in the 12th round and never regained consciousness. He was hospitalized and died the following day of head injuries. Some say that in the final rounds, he clearly was unable to defend himself, but I have never been able to corroborate this though Gavin Evans makes reference to the bout in his compelling book Dancing Shoes Is Dead: A Tale of Fighting Men in South Africa (Black Swan, 2003). Evans believes Morake’s courage, his trainer’s desperate hope, and what he terms the inaction of the referee all contributed to the tragic ending. After deep self-reflection, an emotionally devastated Mitchell returned to the ring in March 1986, knocking out Julio Ruiz in six rounds at Sun City.

In the end, he and the classy Mitchell had a great rivalry going, and according to South African boxing lore (and in a bizarre twist of fate), Morake stated to friends before his fateful fight with Mitchell that he’d rather die than lose.

Like Ghostman above

I enjoyed Ward-Gatti personally the most, and I’m voting that way, because they are—well, what they are, really, and with the release of the Ward movie may/will have a type of historical importance, because I think it will spark a much-needed up-tick in interest in the sport. Ali was the sport, but it was one of the most popular sports in the U.S. at the time—with the movie, Mickey’s a crossover star when the numbers are down.
