Showtime Bantamweights Headed to Tacoma

After originally scheduling the show in Leon, Mexico, promoters for Showtime's December 11 bantamweight double-header were met with reluctance from the network, so the show moved to Los Angeles. Apparently, no venue was located there, but finally there is an official site for the event. Fight fans in the great northwest can head to the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma for the event, which features a rematch of a great 2009 fight between Yonnhy Perez and Joseph Agbeko, and the always-entertaining Vic Darchinyan facing Abner Mares.

The winners of the two fights will meet in 2011, with the losers obligated to meet in a second fight, too. What happens if there's a draw in December? Oh, why be that way. Knock on wood and all that.

This show will go head-to-head (well, it'll start a little earlier) with a junior welterweight double-header from HBO, featuring Amir Khan-Marcos Maidana and Victor Ortiz-Lamont Peterson. Which card are you more excited about?

These are genuinely two really good cards. I do, however, think the HBO fights are slightly more intriguing, as I can’t see Agbeko beating Perez in any way, shape or form. Darchinyan-Mares is probably the best fight of the lot, but Khan-Maidana and Peterson-Ortiz are both very intriguing match-ups.

I’m hoping HBO has the spirit of the holidays and holds off until 10:30 for their card. The bantamweights start at 9pm.

I voted for Showtime, but i’m hoping for amenable scheduling too. Barring that, I always watch Showtime live, becasuse HBO will broadcast early Sunday—so I just don’t go online till after I see it, and it’s the same as live for me. If it were one or the other, I’d go with HBO for this one, being the only person alive who likes Victor Ortiz.

Hmmm. Which card do you reckon will draw better ratings? I imagine we’ll only get Khan-Maidana in the UK, but there’s a possibility that Premier Sports might pick it up, I guess.

HBO, easily, because they have far more subscribers and the other card is four bantamweights.

If i was in the US the HBO card would have a bit more appeal for me.Fans have been calling for Khan v Maidana for quite a while now and Ortiz v Peterson is a pretty solid co main event.
As for the Showtime one, good though it is i would have preferred if they would have gone Mares v Agbeko and Perez v Darchinyan then we would get to see two fights we haven’t already seen,as opposed to one.Still good though.

At least it’s a rematch of a damn good fight. I might have even preferred Perez-Mares and Darchinyan-Agbeko rematches, because I really think Vic beat himself the first time against Agbeko, and the Perez-Mares fight deserved a rematch. Maybe next round.

On the even, I think the bantamweight card is better

Ortiz-Peterson already reeks from where I’m sitting. I’m very interested in Khan-Maidana, but outside of the suspense of whether Maidana can ever land that big punch, I’d be shocked if it’s actually an exciting fight. Meanwhile, I know that at worst Perez-Agbeko II should be a great fight.

I voted for the Showtime card, but it’ll really be whichever starts first. Good ole DVR. 9 o’clock start in Seattle will just be 6 o’clock there right?

chances are, for the record

We’ll do the bantamweights and then the Khan-Maidana fight, since those shouldn’t overlap, and miss Ortiz-Peterson for live coverage. Could be worse. At least it’s just Victor Ortiz.

Thankfully I'll be recording both

but I’ll have to go with the Khan vs Maidana fight to watch live, that match-up is just too damn good in my opinion. Both are great fights however and I’m curious to see how everybody performs in the Bantamweight tournament.

Showtime for me

Although Khan-Maidana is the biggest fight of the night on paper, after seeing Agbeko-Perez-Mares fights last year, a better show is guaranteed by the small dudes.

There’s always the handy switching between channels during fights.

Emerald Queen is in Tacoma

Not Seattle.

I have no idea what you mean

Actually once you mentioned it, it was like an idiot lightbulb went off over my head. There has even been TV boxing there before.

I’ll be going to see this live I think. This will be my first live event since I’ve become a boxing fan. I’m pretty stoked.
