My pick

would be on Martinez,no doubt,… and it is……but i have my worries.
Specifically, how Sergio has ballooned up in the off season?
Martinez on points for me,but at 28-1 i had to take between rds 10-12 for a Martinez stoppage…..Either because of cuts caused by slashing punches or because Williams takes too many shots.

6' 3"

is right…………I see people trying to say Tall Paul is 6" taller than Pac.
5’ 6" 1/2 – 6’ 3" is more then 6" and is one challenge too far,imo.

Officially, Paul is listed at 6'1"

But that’s hogwash. He’s really 6’3". He was taller than Kelly Pavlik side by side, and the same height as Cris Arreola.

Yes

He was towering over Martinez at the weigh in.

And Arreola’s listed height is what, 6’4"? But I think we learned they exaggerated an inch, maybe two when he fought Vitali.

It is hard work throwing accurate power punches all night while staying in and out of harm' way

But throwing the UP at your opponent must be infinitel;y harder.
Pacquiao fights within himself.
Not tall. Not Small.

But fighting almost a man almost a foot taller would require Paul participate and ben in…which he may do….or that Manny have a body attack like he’s never shown before to chop him don to size.

Let’ be clear. No one has rushed to fight Paul and for obvious reson. He’s freaky tall and long. Beatable yes…but long in body and in stamina. Ny guess is that guys like Floyd who hae been welters for some time simply hoped he wouyld outgrow the division. The reality is that he may have already.

by pakinpower on Nov 20, 2010 9:14 PM EST up reply actions

Here is my statistical analysis of the fight

Williams has a 60% chance of KO’ing Martinez within the first round, which becomes a 0% chance by the beginning of the 4th. Then, the chance of Martinez winning a UD starts at 10%, growing to 90% by the end of the fight (i.e. add 10% per round from the 4th onwards.

To sum up, if Williams DOES NOT KO Martinez by the end of the 4th, chances are >50% it goes the distance and Martinez wins a decision if it lasts to the 8th round. Between the 4th and the 8th, Williams has an ever dimishing chance of a KO.

Now on to more important matters: will be be seeing the Tecate girls tonite?

Why is reach listed as to length from finger tip to finger tip?

That is only relevant if the fighter was going to punch his opponent and the ref at the same time. I would much rather see it listed as left and right arm length. This is much more relevant info.

Just wondered bc people are always talking about PW reach and it really does nothing to excite me.

by TXroyal on Nov 20, 2010 7:36 PM EST reply actions

Long answer: I prefer this way and yada yada yada, OK I’m not doing the long answer. Maybe Brick will explain this again, as he changed my mind on it before.

Short answer: Nobody lists arm length and it’s not easy to find the information. HBO does it this way on the broadcasts, though.

by Scott Christ on Nov 20, 2010 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

Straight arm length doesn't incorporate the shoulders

Distance to the head is really what’s important. If someone has shorter arms but longer shoulders, that compensates and they effectively have the same reach, since the shoulders turn when you punch (generally).

by Brickhaus on Nov 20, 2010 8:04 PM EST up reply actions

Makes some sense, but a guy’s probably not going to turn all the way, in other words his shoulder isn’t going to be straight line all the way through his hand.

Regardless, the guy should be making a fist during measurement – finger length def. ain’t relevant.

But

The glove makes that fist significantly larger.

It has to do with getting Martinez and Williams more exposure.

by Matt Mosley on Nov 20, 2010 9:10 PM EST up reply actions

Thats what ive noticed in the past. Fights that pass a certain threshhold are usually replayed.

by cyke on Nov 20, 2010 9:10 PM EST up reply actions

Almost all HBO PPVs in 2009-10 are the major events. They rarely dipped into PPV the last two years for lesser fights. Since 2009, their PPVs have been Hatton-Pacquiao, Mayweather-Marquez, Cotto-Pacquiao, Pacquiao-Clottey, Mayweather-Mosley, Diaz-Marquez II, Mosley-Mora and Pacquiao-Margarito. Diaz-Marquez II did get replays, but lower-key because the fight was basically aimed at the Mexican audience and nobody else (it was like HBO Latin Fury), and Mosley-Mora didn’t have a hyped replay because there was no boxing on HBO the next week, but it was offered on replay. They also replayed Calzaghe-Jones and Pavlik-Hopkins at the end of ‘08 and both of those did miserable buys. They replay all their PPV main events, it just happens that until the Diaz-Marquez and Mosley-Mora fights this year, they hadn’t dabbled in mediocre-selling PPVs since Calzaghe-Jones and Pavlik-Hopkins bombed so hard. Live and don’t learn, that’s the HBO motto.

Lampley seemed to completely forget last week that he'd actually "called" Erislandy Lara before

in a step up fight on the undercard of Pacquiao-Hatton. During the Rigondeaux fight, he referred to another Cuban prospect named Lara who was also supposed to be very good (I don’t remember the exact quote). My biggest problem with him is he’d rather shoot the sh*t with his colleagues than actually call the blow by blow.

by geraldmcgrew on Nov 20, 2010 10:37 PM EST up reply actions

I honestly wouldn’t mind that if his shooting the shit didn’t so constantly seem like a narrative of a fight that clearly is not happening. The Aussie guys calling the Green-Flores fight mostly were shooting the shit, too, but doing so in an entertaining way that was connected to reality.

Rogan won the first fight, to all intents and purposes

Then Sexton won the rematch decisively.

McDermott won the first fight against Danny Williams:
Williams won the second decisively.

Paul Williams got a debatable decision against Sergio (I personally had it a draw and wouldn;t argue either guy winning it, but it was debatable* )….

I have Williams to win more decisively this time. That’s my logic and I’m sticking with it.

Martinez-Williams R1

And they come out throwing shots again, mixing it up at center ring. Sergio trying to stay outside, but Paul is pretty aggressive to start. Martinez comes in now. Paul trying to use his length with long shots, but then they get inside with each other again. Swiping right hook by Martinez. Williams with a nice combo, Martinez there with him, and Martinez lands a left. There they go! Looks like both guys want to fight. Good shots inside by Martinez. Martinez misses a right hook. Two shots by Williams. Both guys getting a little dirty inside when they have to. Close round.

Sergio Martinez is now.....

my new favorite boxer, and to makes things worse,he’s gotta fight Zbik or he loses his WBC title

They'll work something out where they don't need to fight, I'm sure

They’ll probably make him fight Chavez Jr. though, although that’s at least a marketable fight.

I would love to see that… Chavez is a bucket of suck.

Not Zbik?

Like I said

I suspect they’ll work something out. And if they don’t, oh well. It’s not the end of the world if Martinez vacates. He’s still THE CHAMP either way.

I jumped out of my seat

He just shattered him. The way he fell, his whole body just went limp in an instant, you knew he wasn’t getting up. This is why I love boxing, moments like that.

It’s funny to see the replay schedule on a fight that short. I expected the times to be 11:15, 1:20, 3:25….

WOW…………..

The wide open eyes that Williams had when he was down was something I had never seen before…

I am happy he is ok… and god bless Martinez.

One of Jones' victims had that look on his face

got caught with the 1-2, really fast, went down in slo-mo, rolled over onto his back (under the ropes), and his face is one of the most horrid things I’ve seen in a ring.

His name escapes me right about now

I have to say, the last two times I’ve EXPECTED a Paul Williams fight, they haven’t lasted enough… I liked that Martinez won, but that was highly unsatisfying…

if only.

would actually be the only fight besides Pac in which Money’d get public respect back, but don’t see it happening. if he’s to really put his “0” on the line, even he’d probably figue it might as well be against Manny.

I can see no way that Manny beats Sergio. Too big. Too skilled, too powerful.
