And it was not a left hook as so many have incorrectly reported. Martinez is a southpaw and does not throw a left hook. He throws a left cross. Besides, it was an overhand left, but we digress.

Question about the quote
I am confused about the quote and admittedly not as knowledgeable about the sport as others on this site.
I’ve heard Dan mention that southpaws do not throw left hooks in previous write ups (I think he said it for Pac vs. Hatton), but I don’t understand why a southpaw does not throw them. It sounds like he is saying it is impossible for them to.
However, being an orthodox guy, I seem to have no problem throwing a right hook. I also think Tyson used to throw a nice right hook-right uppercut combo. So what’s the meaning behind “Martinez is a southpaw and does not throw a left hook”?
The word “cross” is just a substitue for the word “hook” when thrown by the back hand.
However,a hook is shorter because it is nearer the opponent and has less distance to travel.
As Rafael said though,Matinez’ punch was neither a cross or a hook,it was a straight punch.
A cross
is similar to a hook but the hook is only ever thrown by the front hand.
However,i have heard a straight right hand called a cross before so it can get a bit confusing.
This
But frankly, it’s getting a bit too far into semantics in some ways.

Having now watched the punch from about 5 angles, I do think it was a cross, not a straight left.
