Cliff Rold

is backing Abraham inside 5 rounds…http://www.boxingscene.com/?m=show&id=33261…..I‘m a bit suprised at that but i thought Abraham was a bit more effective against Dirrell than given credit for (as the fight wore on) and i mean before the illegal punch. :)
Froch has taunted Abraham about how Dirrell had his no. for much of that fight but Froch is no Dirrell in terms of slickness, movement and boxing ability, which are what flummoxed AA.
Froch’s style is pretty much made for AA,imo but no way do i see it ending in 5 rds.
I had a bet for an Abraham stoppage in rd 12 (20-1) but if Abraham can’t get him out of there,i think it will be very close on points and maybe controversial.
Interestingly Dirrell’s assistant trainer, who is likely no fan of either fighter is picking Abraham big.

by Matt Mosley on Nov 27, 2010 1:03 PM EST reply actions

I still like Abraham late. I honestly don’t believe either of them are better or worse than the other, just different. I’m a Froch fan but I just like Abe’s power once Carl wears himself out, because I don’t think Froch can stop Abraham, and I expect he’ll try in the mid-late rounds, particularly if he feels he’s built up a lead.

I know you mentioned that you think this will be a good fight but maybe not a great fight.
If either or both of them decide to box i can see it being as you wrote in your preview but if they decide to stand and trade at any stage, especially if it happens early on,i think thats when we are going to get the war many are looking for,and a FOTY contender.

Primetime

have Hopkins v Pascal listed for Dec 18th for any Brit fans interested.
They offered it when i ordered the Showtime double bill,at a discount rate so i got Froch v Abraham,Ward v Bika and Hopkins v Pascal for £23.
Hopkins fight should have been £10 but was discounted to £8 if you buy now.
I don’t usually bother with Primetime because of past experience but i really want to see Froch v AA and the salewoman lured me in for the Hopkins one.

Someone was getting into an argument with me that if Froch wins this, he should be ranked P4P top 5. I couldn’t get him to make a coherent argument, however, as to how he should be ranked ahead of Pacquiao, Mayweather, Martinez, Marquez or Klitschko. Or Kessler for that matter.

Why would Dirrell need lawyers to answer which doctor he went to see and what his symptoms were.
I was willing to give the benfit of the doubt but then his flunkie started going on about lawyers?

by Matt Mosley on Nov 27, 2010 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

Litigation

in the US is like a national hobby. There are people who do it—not lawyers, people who’s avocation and sustenance is suing people and living off the proceeds. This sets up a very defensive-minded population mind-set. Added to that is the horrendous trashing he took for “acting” that DQ, which was psychically similar to the crowd throwing beer & pee on dying fighters going out on stretchers, and you would get a siege mentality. The lawyer reference bothers people here too, but I can see it as siege mentality more easily than anything else.

I do think

Dirrell is getting too much doubt and suspicion cast on him in this case and i tend to believe what he says. The shot from Abraham was hard and unexpected.
Being from the UK we are not as used to all the litigation stuff and i was just wondering why he couldn’t answer the question but i understand what his associate was saying in that the questions being asked were a bit intrusive and were possibly trying to insinuate that Dirrell’s story was untrue.
If he even had just a bit of dizzyness i don’t blame him for pulling out.
You can’t be too careful with head injuries in this sport.

by Matt Mosley on Nov 28, 2010 9:09 AM EST up reply actions

FWIW

I’m hearing rumblings that Dirrell is back training again. Not sure whether it’s true, but if it is, then my respect for him dropped a little. If he’s actually having neurological problems of the sort he was complaining about, then it’s not something that will just go away with a few months’ rest.

I have bet on Abraham 12th rd stoppage at 20-1

but i honestly think it go either way.Froch could nick it on points and if it goes tha full 12,i think he is more likely to come through with the nod.
I don’t mind these kind of fights because i have a chance of winning a few quid with AA but i will be happy for our fellow Brit if Carl wins.

Still, gonna be a good night of boxing, will have to DL Marquez Katsidis in the morning!

He may not be the best boxer around

but Froch has been in some good, entertaining fights which is surely what matters most to us fans.
Pascal,Taylor,(OK Dirrell was bad),Kessler and now hopefully Abraham.
The Taylor fight is worth watching more than once just for the ending.
I’m proud to say Froch is English and i think it was after the Taylor fight that he earned a few American fans.

by Matt Mosley on Nov 27, 2010 4:21 PM EST reply actions

which he prompty lost after the Dirrell fight

I was particularly incensed that he actually bragged about beating Dirrell, even though he clearly was gifted the fight. If he had just said something like, “yeah, it was a close fight, but this one went my way,” I wouldn’t have minded. But he acted like he had just blown out Dirrell, as if Dirrell wasn’t even in his league, when Dirrell actually took him to school.

I’m not Froch fan.

Oh, and what Scott said: Abraham by late KO.

I agree that Dirrell won the fight but it was only by about 2 rounds, imo, and Dirrell “fought” like a frightened rabbit all night, though landed the more meaningful (counter)shots as far as i could see.
I think you’ll find many Americans are Froch fans from what i see on the message boards but i’m sure Froch doesn’t really care either way.
Oh,and Dirrell had less to be proud about in that fight than Froch did.At least Froch actually wanted to fight. :)

Agreed 100%

And when he lost (and imho he did so clearly against Kessler) he called it a home town decision.

I didn’t like Froch because of all the mouth to Calzaghe.
He won me over with his performances against Pascal and Taylor.
He started to lose me with his attitude after the Dirrel fight.
I’ve gone back to not liking him since the Kessler fight.

Consider their fall, Scott. This was a National Powerhouse 15 years ago. Now they’re not even close to a conference powerhouse. A move to a weaker conference, the weakest AQ conference by far, may allow them to compete again.

Also, likely the Pac-10

top to bottom that is.

I’d say the Big 12 is likely better than the big 10 (although its somewhat close) and the sec is perenially the best.

Pac-10 has Oregon St, Washingotn, Washington St., Cal, UCLA, Arizona, Arizona St, aweakened USC and a legit oregon team, and a quasi legit stanford team. That being said, no way in Hell oregon goes unbeaten in even the Big 10 I would think.

Yeah, people keep saying that, and it was admittedly true a couple of times when Ohio State laid a turd in bowl games (that and Tressel gets outcoached when against other powerhouse teams), but it’s not as gigantic an issue as people seem to believe.

I just don’t buy into this group think that the Big Ten teams are all in concrete shoes while the SEC and (this year’s two best Pac-10 teams) are filled with Usain Bolt knockoffs.

Shit I hope I don’t buy into group think, either. But I do watch the games. And I do pay attention to recruiting class rankings – The Big 10 is consistently way down the line on the recruits lists. Independent of causes and conditions, it follows that they’re not going to have the studs. Then, when I see them get demolished in Bowl games by faster teams, I reach conclusions.

You can’t bring a donkey to the horse race.

One of the great misunderstandings in college football is that the Big Ten’s teams have trouble winning bowl games generally, and that they are especially out of their depth in games against teams from the Southeastern Conference.

In fact, the Big Ten does just fine year after year—in the early New Year’s Day bowls that no one remembers. (It’s the big games that have been the embarrassments.) Over the past dozen seasons, the Big Ten is now 13-11 against the SEC in the Outback and Capital One bowls. That is a winning record over a significant time span against upper-level SEC teams in SEC country.

1. New Year’s day Bowls

2. The trend is clear and will continue to widen as better athletes choose schools in the Big 12, SEC, PAC 10, and Boise State over Big 10 schools, as the data shows.

You mean New Year’s Day bowls like the Capital One and Outback, where they play an SEC team every year, and a good SEC team at that. The trend is not clear. Notre Dame has a highly-rated recruiting class every year, too.

If we stretch out the data to 100 years the Big 10 will look even better.

check out the Big 10’s stats over the past 5 years in Bowl game – not just against the SEC, but overall. For a so-called “powerhouse” conference, they’re not doing well.

"Yes Gina, I am a Wise Cracker"

Well if you want to narrow it from 12 to 5, how about just last year where the conference went 4-3 in bowls. Why not?

I guess Oregon also got 200% faster since last year when Ohio State beat them.

It might continue to show. It didn’t last year. I don’t mean to sound like some Big Ten flunky. It’s clearly not on the level of the SEC or, in almost all years, the Big 12. But it’s just not any worse than the ACC or Pac-10. The Big East is the pathetic joke of a BCS conference, but they’re so bad now that nobody even bothers paying attention to the fact that they steal an AQ spot every year.

Def. better than the Big East

I don’t know if that’s true about the ACC, though. Of the 4 major conferences (Big 10, SEC, Big 12, PAC), the Big 10’s quality of football is shocking.

Here’s the other thing: the ACC will rise again – Miami, Va Tech are schools that can recruit in America’s breadbasket of football regardless of their current position. Increasingly, the northern schools (Big 10) cannot get those same kids, with the notable exception of OSU – who is the beneficiary of some guy named Pickens.

I think Froch is wrong about Abraham being a middleweight. He has grown into this weight and looked strong and powerful at the weigh in,imo.
AA was killing himself to amke 160 and was probably weakening himself.
168 is just right for him and i think Froch will find out soon enough that he hits more than hard enough for the weight.

Height is not everything in boxing after all.
Roy Jones was only 5’10",Marvin Hagler 5’ 9"….Some would say that is small for a 168/160lber.
I say Dwight Muhammad Qawi was 5’ 7" and still very effective as a cruiserweight.
Montel Griffin was a short light heavy too.

Froch-Abraham R1

Abraham out with his guard high, Froch jabbing at distance with his left low. Just like it might look on a video game. Abraham circling at center ring. Abraham shoots a wild right, but not even close to landing. Abraham with a right, not much on it as it nicks a ducking Froch. Slow start from Abraham as usual. Froch with a left, then a right after is mostly blocked. Abraham wildly charges with another right. Uppercut from Froch is short. Jabs starting to land for Froch, and he’s pumping it consistently. Good right to the body by Froch, and Abraham avoids complaining for now. Froch’s length is making a difference so far. Froch with a combo, Abraham misses a right hand.

Froch 10-9

Apparently, you forgot about just last year, when they won the Big 12 North and came within a point of winning the whole thing. If coming within a single point is not “remotely close” then I don’t know what is.

Froch still jabbing. Abraham still with the high guard. Abraham gets in close, and Froch drops low and puts a shoulder into him, tying him up. Probably smart of him. Abraham with a jab to the body. Froch misses a left hook and a right is blocked after. Hard uppercut by Froch, mostly blocked but had some steam on it. Froch’s jab still working. Froch with a right and left after, then a left. Nothing lands clean. But it looks like Abraham is waking up. Abraham shoots another left hook. Froch blocks another left hook, very telegraphed by Abraham. Froch backs him down with a right, then four shots to the body. Right hand down the pipe shoves Abraham back a little. Abraham absorbing blows but losing the rounds clearly right now. Froch with a right at the end of the round.

Froch-Abraham R3

Abraham just can’t find his range, a credit to Froch’s jabbing and his effectiveness with his feet so far. But Abraham is always a coiled cobra, with respect to Froch’s nickname. Abraham wings a couple and does catch Froch with a left. Closer round with a minute left, could be stolen. Abraham opens up, doesn’t land anything big. There’s a right hand from Arthur, his best shot of the fight so far. Froch misses a right. Abraham’s pace picking up. And Froch starts stalking and throwing combinations, too. This could really get going at any moment. Froch backs Abraham down and unloads on the ropes. Uppercut by Froch. Closest round, I still go with Froch.

Froch-Abraham R4

Body shot by Froch. Carl still jabbing effectively on the outside. Froch loading up on shots now, going body and head, mostly getting blocked, but occasionally getting through, and is obviously the aggressor and the one putting in major work. Abraham is marked up and getting nothing done offensively. Abraham charges and still can’t do much. Abraham misses another right. Now they’re both jabbing. Now and then Abraham, as always, looks alive, but it’s just not enough. But it looks like he might be ready to turn it up.

Both of these guys are fighting exactly like themselves. And that is, predictably, favoring Froch on the cards. Abraham is always dangerous, but the way he’s fighting, he’s going to need the knockout. Froch firing, Abraham coming back but doesn’t have the speed, and what he does is really telegraphed. Abraham looks awful and might have gotten stung there with a right hand. Now he fires his own right, might have nicked Froch. Another round for Carl Froch, punctuated with a left.

Froch-Abraham R6

Abraham still just waiting and waiting and waiting. When he does throw, it’s so reckless and easy to defend that it does nothing but make him look desperate. Froch pops him with a left. He’s done well when Abraham has dropped his guard now and again, getting a quick shot in. Nothing huge, but it counts. Right hand by Froch. Body shots from Froch. They just called it “target practice,” which is a bit much. Left hand by Abraham, not clean, and Froch almost catches him stumbling around again. Right hand by Froch is wild, and Abraham comes back just as wild. Froch catches Abraham, and Abraham slips.

Froch-Abraham R7

There are times during Arthur Abraham’s fights when I wonder what exactly his plan is. Does he ever consider that he’s NOT going to knock someone out? Froch isn’t landing a ton still, but he’s just throwing and throwing, and Abraham is doing NOTHING. Abraham gets backed down, he’s getting marked up, and he’s not fighting back. If Arthur Abraham ever ran into an especially jumpy referee he could get stopped without eating a proper hard shot. If Abraham wins this fight, chances are it’s going to be an all-time great possum performance winding Froch to the point he can’t do much. Froch lands a good body shot.

Froch with another right to the body. Then he throws upstairs, Abraham backs down and covers up, and NOTHING COMES BACK. Froch has him cornered and getting wild now. Froch eggs Abraham on, and lands punches. Abraham does that and does nothing. Now it gets a bit chippy and Abraham gets warned for an elbow. Froch continues to fairly easily win this fight. I’m not saying it’s easy, because it’s hard to hit Abraham clean. Abraham stings him with a left, but Froch recovers really quickly and keeps throwing.

by Curtis2012 on Nov 27, 2010 6:19 PM EST reply actions

I like Abraham's chances better against Ward than against Froch

Ward will have a serious speed advantage, as well as a serious versatility advantage, but no reach advantage, a serious power disadvantage, and his chin isn’t nearly as good as Froch’s. I suspect Ward will try to bully Abraham on the inside like he did against Kessler, since Abraham has little to no inside game, but I don’t think Ward can outbox him on the outside like Dirrell and Froch did, since Ward would have a reach disadvantage against Abraham.

Froch-Abraham R9

Right hand by Froch gets Abraham’s attention in a big way. Abraham throws back. But he doesn’t have the speed to find Froch. Froch is a lot better than he often gets credit for, and I felt this fight was basically 50-50 coming in, but Froch is for all intents and purposes dominating this fight. He’s completely shutting Abraham down. Another right backs Arthur down. Froch chasing him and throwing punches in bunches. Abraham still has not found range. Abraham is obviously discouraged and may now be well out of this fight.

Froch 10-9
Froch 90-81

Froch-Abraham R10

Froch backing him down again. Froch is putting the pressure on, landing cleaner than earlier, and he looks extremely confident. At the same time Froch isn’t getting overly wild, just taking openings when they do come. The jab is still there. Abraham looks broken in spirit. Left hand to the body hurts Abraham. Froch again throwing, Abraham comes back but can’t land anything. Froch is in full control.

Ward has 7 points.
Abraham and Johnson have 3
Froch has 2

If Froch wins, he’ll be in second place. Abraham takes the tiebreaker over Johnson since he won more rounds on the cards.

Froch-Abraham R11

Froch whacking Abraham around the ring some more. Abraham still refusing to do anything offensively. Froch to the body, and FINALLY Abraham whines about it being low. The referee says no. Abraham has no spirit left whatsoever. None. He’s hardly even in the fight at this point. He’s doing nothing. Another body shot. Left by Froch to the head.

Froch-Abraham R12

Abraham with a right! Now he’s alive! What do you know! Froch getting TAGGED now! That one hurt him! Froch got sloppy, but then he tied up and is settling down now. Now Froch staying away from Abraham, and tying him up when he gets close. Carl Froch is…fighting smart. I said it. Now body shots and a right hand to the guard from Froch. Uppercut is blocked. Abraham trying to load up a big shot, but he’s only got 1:15 left, and he HAS to knock Froch out. Froch still throwing from outside, and frankly winning the round again even after Arthur hurt him early. Froch letting his hands go. Now he takes a clear rabbit shot swipe at Abraham — that was on purpose, let’s not lie. Left hand counter by Froch. Abraham with a big right! And the bell sounds.

Such were the days, still, hot, heavy, disappearing one by one into the past, as if falling into an abyss for ever open in the wake of the ship; and the ship, lonely under a wisp of smoke, held on her steadwast way black and smouldering in a luminous immensity, as if scorched by a flame flicked at her from a heaven without pity.
