Guerrero/Escobedo Round 1

Both fighters are feeling each other out early. Guerrero is aggressive tonight, landing a good straight left that stuns Escobedo. Both fighters heads collide. Guerrero stalks a bleeding Escobedo. Guerrero is landing right hooks to the body. Escobedo finally begins throwing counter shots but Guerrero easily takes the round with the hooks to the body.

10-9 Guerrero

Round 2

Slow start to the round. Escobedo is coming out more aggressively this round, but Guerrero continues to land the hook to the body. Fighters clinch up. Robert Guerrero is looking much better than the Casamayor fight here. Guerrero lands a good shot to the body of Escobedo, who clinches up. Post round, both corners instruct their fights to throw a hook when the opponent comes inside.

Round 3

Escobedo comes toward Guerrero throwing and Guerrero lands a BIG HOOK and left and Escobedo is down to his knees! Escobedo up at eight and looking okay, but he needs to make an adjustment. Escobedo is finding success with his right. Bid shot to the body again by Guerrero, but Escobedo still fighting with spirit. Good fight so far.

Round 4

Escobedo’s corner wants him to counter Guerrero’s lunging body shots with an uppercut. Guerrero not as aggressive early and Escobedo is finding more success with body shots. Fight has slowed here with Guerrero laying off some. Good right from Escobedo and he follows with a left hook. Good round for Escobedo. Guerrero abandoned the body shots in that round.

10-9 Escobedo

Round 5

Good hook from Escobedo early. Fighters appear to bang heads and Escobedo goes down, ref rules it a slip. Escobedo looks to be cut from the clash of heads. Escobedo is protecting his body better and lands a good combo on Guerrero. Good straight left hand by Guerrero wobbles Escobedo! Escobedo is in trouble on the ropes! Escobedo goes down near the corner but the ref rules it a slip. Ref starts again and Guerrero is looking to finish. Ref separates the fighters, Guerrero lays off and the round ends. Commentators seem to think that Escobedo went down instead of slipping.

Round 6

BIG UPPERCUT by Guerrero drops Escobedo! Escobedo smiles and stands, looking okay. Very similar start to round 3 in that Escobedo was aggessive early and dropped by Guerrero. Escobedo lands a good shot to the body. Guerrero is looking very good here.

Round 7

Escobedo’s corner wants him to keep his left up to counter the big right uppercut/hooks of Guerrero. Guerrero is aggressive and Escobedo is content to counter. Good body shot by Escobedo. Lederman saying that Escobedo spends too much time bobbing and weaving and not throwing. Escobedo just doesn’t seem to have a way to stop a body shot. Good exchange by both fighters to close the round.

Judah-Matthysse R2

I like how the HBO graphic says “L. Matthysse” and “Judah,” as if there is a mass of folks who may confuse him with the well-known and great Walter Matthysse. Why not “Z. Judah”? What if I think that’s Daniel? Anyways…

Crowd is starting to boo the fight halfway into another tentative round. Matthysse is shooting heavy shots at the body, but that’s about it. Judah is kind of just standing there this round. He’s flicking a jab, but not really landing it. According to Lampley and Jones, fans have no clue about anything about Matthysse. You know, because they’re both so familiar with him.

Crowd booing for the third time. They’re booing because the fight isn’t entertaining. Let’s not be nice for niceness’ sake or blame it on mass fan ignorance of Lucas Matthysse. Simply put this fight is overly tentative and dull from both sides.

Matthysse is really targeting the body with his right hand. Judah is just not letting anything go. At all. Left hook to the body by Matthysse. Power punches landed this round: Judah 0. 0. Judah is doing NOTHING. THERE IT IS! Judah with a nice, hard left hand. Finally he wakes up a bit. Another one gets in. And those two punches, those two punches, are enough to win the round.

Lederman gave that round to Matthysse. Fair enough.

Left to the body by Zab, then he misses one upstairs. Judah is picking up his pace just a little. Matthysse really is throwing some very hard stuff to the body. It’s not landing clean as much as he’d like, but there’s legitimate zip on those punches. Judah’s bleeding near his left eye. Crowd booing some more. Matthysse continues to target the body. Three jabs from Zab. Body shot by Matthysse. And another. And another, but then a left form Judah, and Matthysse right back with a body shot.

Judah looks so lethargic. Or disinterested. Or Judah. Whatever. He’s not as quick as you’d expect, not as active, not as willing to let his hands go. He seems to fear Matthysse’s power. Matthysse continues to land more effective shots. Judah continues to let himself down. Judah clips him with a left, then gets closer on a second one. Lampley praises that he simply threw a couple. But he did do better work this round.

Since I’m now convinced this is going all 12, I’m terrified of the scores. It feels to me like Matthysse has imposed his will so much more effectively, and it hasn’t even been that effective. Matthysse lands a right to the head. Maybe he overtrained, maybe he’s just not all that good anymore, but Zab is not the fighter of hype anymore. His hands look much slower than they used to, and he’s just not doing much in there. The Judah corner, which last year compared him to Arturo Gatti, tells him not to worry about the crowd, which hates this fight.

Uh oh, Zab’s alive! A couple of terrific left hands. Then Judah complains about head butts again. And now what the hell is he doing? Zab’s got his crying face on and has to be all but dragged back into the fight by the referee. Long right by Matthysse misses. Jones “doesn’t want to talk about” his last fight with Hopkins. Neither does anyone else.

And since the crying face, Judah has gone back to nothing. Well there’s a left, but still one at a time. Matthysse makes a couple charges but can’t do much with Zab.

Matthysse firing! He’s head hunting in a big way. There’s a left to the body. Matthysse lands again. Judah is not doing anything. He’s scared of Matthysse. There’s no getting around it. Another right gets in. And another! That one thudded. Judah not throwing, just walking and eventually trying to hold on.

Left hand by Judah, then he throws a couple more shots, those blocked. DOWN GOES JUDAH — ruled a push, couldn’t tell. A punch was thrown. Snapping jab by Matthysse. Combination from Matthysse! Judah is reeling in a major way. Matthysse tearing into him, body and head. Finally the commentators have come alive. Another good right hand! Judah is no longer mentally in this fight.

Solid round for Matthysse, borderline 10-8 without a knockdown

The push probably should have been called a knockdown even

Judah-Matthysse R12

Matthysse still stalking. Judah is a bit more active, though, and at least is even through the first half of the round. Zab stumbling around. Matthysse pressing again. Matthysse still throwing in combination. Judah is scared to throw first. Judah with a left, best punch he’s landed in a while. 30 seconds to go in a likely razor-thin fight. Matthysse firing and firing.

10-10
Matthysse 116-112

I liked this fight, and I think we all sounded too much like haters in this thread. A very good fight.

which Matthyse won.

A very good fight.

I think that is an incredible overestimation of a fight that ended semi-dramatically and was miserable for at least the first half.

The first half of the fight really, really sucked. The last four rounds were decent and sort of dramatic, but I just watched Lopez-Marquez. That was a “very good” or great fight. This was not even remotely close to that level. Neither of these guys did all that much effectively. If this fight was good, Lopez-Marquez was unlike anything ever seen.

I had just got in froma heavy night on the sauce, ready for my pillow, and Lopez/Marquez woke me right the fuck up. Then Super Judah and the Kostya Tszyu wannabe put me to sleep (hence the end of my interaction in this thread about halfway through, when my head just dropped onto my chest….)

And folks, this is why its better to be a good boxer than a good puncher

A good boxer can get his punches off because of his skill set and dominate just on boxing alone. While a good puncher either needs a guy to make a mistake or just get lucky to land a big shot.
Zab cannot setup his power punch, left hand. He needs to learn and box to setup his power punches instead of just throwing one hard punch at a time.

by The Floorer on Nov 7, 2010 1:20 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t really get it. I’m not sure either guy fits into either of those categories.

"Yes Gina, I am a Wise Cracker"

by lcollins1 on Nov 7, 2010 1:22 AM EDT up reply actions

I just was making the point how Zab wasn’t able to get his power punch off because of his lack of boxing skills to be able to setup that power punch up. He needs a guy to run into it, he cant set it up how a true boxer can set up their power punches.

by The Floorer on Nov 7, 2010 1:27 AM EDT up reply actions

I think if you tally up the scorecards from round 1, Judah might actually did win the fight, technically. But if this was a fight on the street and people made a decision on who won the fight AFTER it was over, Zab clearly loss.

Zab won, technically on points, but he physically loss this fight. Zab got beat up, Matthysee didn’t.
