I may do the Irish card in the same thread if you don't mind
Can’t find the South African one. Oh well.

I hadn’t seen much of Watson until a highlight clip on the Ringside show yesterday and although he is lacking in experience,i have to admit i was quite impressed with his handspeed and combination punching.
As someone said, this could be a good clash of styles.
The undercard bout could be fairly entertaining too.
All I’ve seen of him that I can recall I watched on YouTube last night. Seems to have some skills. If he can use his height and reach, this could be a good fight.

Cook and Jones in the ring, about to get this going

Cook-Jones R1

Both guys are really winging some heavy shots. Jones backs him down a bit, but then doesn’t follow up and Cook keeps coming at him. Kind of a sloppy first couple of minutes, as it’s the feeling-out process but both fighters are looking to be aggressive, which means a lot of bad misses as they haven’t gotten their range or timing just yet. Jones was a bit more controlled, landed a few more good shots.
Jones 10-9

I just checked Jones’ record.Didn’t know he got stopped in his last to Craig Watson and has lost 4 of his last 5.
Maybe this won’t be that good a fight after all. :)
Yeah, they’re not awful losses.

Cook-Jones R2

Cook throwing just wild hooks and right hands whenever he gets a chance. It’s like he wants to prove how much power he has, sort of like Roman Martinez against Ricky Burns, and so far he’s got no rhythm. He’s fighting like a drummer going after paparazzi. Well, better form than that, but you know.
Watt keeps complimenting Jones’ jab, but it’s worth saying it’s really been more a good distraction weapon than a strong, consistent punch that lands. Cook is lunging and still missing terribly. Jones is really controlling the pace and flow of the fight. Cook really needs to calm down and let his ability work for him, and then his power will come to Jones naturally. I think he’s making this easy for Jones, not that Jones is doing anything spectacular.

Adam Smith doesn’t seem to draw out his annoying use of the word jaaaaaaabbbbb anymore.
Maybe he’s started listening to tapes of himself and realised.
God, once you mentioned it, I heard him saying it in my head.

Cook-Jones R3

Cook with a counter right, but doesn’t land flush. Now Cook coming in with a bit more substance, but Jones lands a long, looping left hand. Now Cook slows down and lays back as Jones jabs. Good right by Cook! That one had some steam on it. Now he’s starting to get going, as he may have lulled Jones a bit. Right hand body shot by Cook after Jones misses. Cook lands a little flurry near the end of the round, and takes this one.
Cook 10-9

Thanks for that Brickhaus
I will have a look cos i haven’t seen Garcia yet and i have really wanted to see if he was as good as some say.
Cook-Jones R4

Both fighters are looking lively, it must be said. Jabbing again from Jones, and now there’s time called as Cook’s boot comes untied. Cook is back to looking sloppy and somewhat out of sorts. Another round for Jones, in my view. Cook might need to really get it going in these middle rounds.
Jones 10-9

Garcia is just mauling Mitchell
Mitchell manages to stay on his feet, barely. When he starts throwing punches, he doesn’t stop until the other guy throws back.

Did i just hear the Irish commentator right?
“This guy has got a great future behind him”
Them Irishmen. Hahaha
Cook-Jones R5

Cook’s aggression has been nice, but he’s just not been very effective with it. But now he makes a good charge, and lands a solid right hand. The problem is he’s just not able to stay with the effective aggression. He’ll land a nice shot, maybe the best punch of any given round, and then Jones keeps controlling the fight. Left hook by Cook, then he badly misses a right hand. Close round, and the crowd was alive for Cook, but I think Jones took another one.

Hard for me to read much into that fight.Garcia was throwing plenty but maybe because of that he seemed to be slapping now and again.
Looked pretty quick but i would favour DeGale over him.
Hopefully Garcia might get to fight DG and/or Grove back in the future.

Cook-Jones R6

Even when Jones is retreating, he manages to sneak in something. I wouldn’t be surprised if Cook might be ahead 3-2 in rounds so far, or if this is 2-2-1, but Cook clearly thinks he’s behind, and is starting to really get rolling here in the sixth round. He’s banging his way in, and then once there, still throwing. He’s also making Jones uncomfortable with body shots. Cook is really looking sharp. BIG right stings Jones, body shot, AND DOWN GOES BARRIE JONES! What a charge by Jason Cook! Jones will fight on, 13 seconds left in ther ound, DOWN AGAIN ON A BODY SHOT! HE WON’T MAKE IT! HE SAYS NO!
Jason Cook KO-6
What a finish!

Rees-Watson R1

Right hand by Rees about a minute in is the first notable punch. Both are playing the waiting game so far, but Rees is definitely more active. Rees turning it up and backing Watson down at will. Rees popping Watson. Watson really does look like the deer in the headlights.
Rees 10-9
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
Rees-Watson R2

Rees drills Watson and knocks him back again. Watson just cannot keep pace with Rees or do anything with him. Either it’s a trigger issue or he’s just out of his depth. Left to the body, and again. Good shots by Rees. Rees with a clipping right hand. Left hand gets in. Now Rees is showboating a bit. Watson trying to measure Rees, which serves only to get him hit with another right hand. This is all Gavin Rees so far.
Rees 10-9

Rees-Watson R3

Watson just cannot keep Rees off of him or do anything offensively. Rees is definitely willing to get hit coming in, which he is now and then, but then he gets to really unload the way he likes to. Rees landing more good shots. Two rights by Rees. Left hook by Rees as Watson is throwing. Watson shooting right hands, but not landing clean. Good right hand by Rees stings Watson! Watson on the run, and he clinches up. Rees just charging at him now. Another big, easy round for Rees.
Rees 10-9
Rees 30-27
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
To look at these two in size if you didn’t know Rees surely most people would think Watson would kick his arse.
Rees-Watson R4

Sharp left hook by Rees snaps Watson’s head. Borderline low blow on a hook to the body. Watson backing down yet again, now on his bike yet again. Rees just won’t relent, as always. Body shots by Rees, and at the same time he makes Watson miss. Right hand over the top by Rees. He is thoroughly dominating John Watson. This isn’t horrible or anything, but he’s just getting cracked. Now he perks up and trades shots with Rees, which doesn’t work out so well for him either. This is a young fighter meeting his current wall. Rees is much too good for Watson. Rees makes another right hand-led charge at the end.

Rees-Watson R5

Watson letting his hands go in the first minute. Good for him. Rees gets to him again, though. Rees landing upstairs, and when Watson blocks, he shoots to the body right away. Halfway into the round, this is definitely Watson’s best round, and he’s still losing it. Now, finally, Watson seems to have let Rees know that there are in fact two fighters in the ring. Then there are two good left hooks by Rees, but Watson and Rees both fire at center ring. Right hand Rees!
Best round of the fight, and Watson is alive if nothing else.

Rees-Watson R6

Well, this really might be getting interesting. Suddenly this is turning into a much closer bout. Rees isn’t quite as active, as he’s getting hit more than earlier, and his charges are a bit less effective. Watson still not landing a lot, though, and you Rees is still winning this round. And it ends, and I have him winning this one, too. Watson really is in this fight finally, but he might need a stoppage.

Rees-Watson R7

Rees landing good shots again to start the round. Watson lands a good shot, Rees lands in return, and Watson has him bleeding from the nose now. Watson turning it up now in the second half of this round. Good body shot gets in, and he’s slowed Rees down noticeably. Rees getting tagged now! Watson is starting to come on! Rees, being Rees, stands there and trades. Great body shots by Watson! Right hand by Watson! Rees might be reeling just a bit, and the blood is really flowing. Watson still targeting the body ,and he ends the round trading with Rees.

Rees-Watson R8

We’re now getting to the point where stamina could be an issue, and at the moment it appears it would be Rees that will have some issue there. He dropped down to 135 and spent a lot of energy early on.
Watson just SAVAGELY going at Rees body as they get close inside. Rees throws one back. Watson leading the action more and more. We’re starting to see a hell of a good scrap. Watson is tough, isn’t willing to surrender, and Rees is the same Gavin Rees from before. This is a battle of wills as much as anything now. Rees’ mouthpiece comes out, so time is called.
Left hook by Rees, but Watson still landing. He’s even using his height better than earlier. It’s like a light went on in the fifth round and he’s been a totally different fighter since then. Another good round, and this fight — and the crowd — have become rowdy.
Watson 10-9

Rees-Watson R9

Rees hurt on a body shot, and there’s another one. We’re halfway into this round, and I’ll admit I’m really falling into this fight. Watson’s effort is great, and Rees, though he’s reeling, won’t stop fighting his fight. He’s always had guts, and we’re seeing them tested. Rees with a flurry, getting a rise from his fans. Rees leaning back on the ropes now. But he comes off and throws a wild, powerful uppercut. What a fight this has become.
Watson 10-9
Rees 87-84

Rees-Watson R10

Long right by Watson. Rees fires back with a combination. Stereo jabs. Hard right to the body by Watson. Rees taking the initiative again in the first minute, I’d say. Rees ties him up, Watson does some sort of shimmy in his arms, and Rees smiles and taps him on the chest. I don’t think you can get into Rees’ head with antics, I’ll say that much.
Rees doing much better this round than the last few. Watson isn’t landing as much or as well in the 10th, and Rees is fighting at a nice pace. Good left hook by Rees, but then he gets too wild and almost puts himself in a very bad position. BIG RIGHT HAND DOWN GOES WATSON! WATSON IS VERY HURT! BUT HE’S UP!
He’s on bad legs! 10 seconds in the round! Rees charging! Watson hangs on until the bell! Rees warned for punching after the bell, but the bell was drowned out by the fans.

Let’s see if Watson’s legs are back. Left hand rocks Watson, and REES IS GOING FOR THE KILL! Watson hanging on, and shaking his head to say he’s not in trouble. But he’s backing away from Rees constantly now. He wants nothing to do with an exchange. Right hand by Rees! Watson again in trouble! I’ll say it again, this is a GREAT crowd.
Rees pouring it on, and THE REFEREE STOPS IT!

haha, just about to post that
At 5’7", Rees will be giving up three inches of height to Watson, but I don’t think Watson is quite skilled enough to keep the determined Rees off of him for the whole fight, and I expect that Rees is going to dig, dig, and dig some more en route to a late stoppage. Rees TKO-11

Some tough picks but at least they are mainly high profile fights, which is good for me.

Yeah
i saw the youtube link on this site the day after. From what i remember it was just as if they went into an exchange,no one got hurt or even any real clean punches landed, and the ref goes and stops it ??
I read elsewhere that Matthyse was getting on top in the fight but it was still a bad (hometown?) stoppage.
His eyes were closing quite badly, and it was only the 3rd/4th round I think. I never saw anything like as bad as it before, it was completely random!

IMO it’s only the second-worst stoppage of the year. The Daniel Estrada-Angel Alirio Rivero fight from early in the year was absurd. Rivero was literally in mid-punch in a good exchange.

It was truly odd. Brick and I both wound up ordering that card, and it was a shockingly good fight. Every time Rivero got hurt, he’d just start throwing these insane bombs that landed. I was watching with a friend who is a casual fan, and we were loving the fight. It was a deflating, awful ending. And then Col. Bob Sheridan defended it because he defends every referee ever.

Arguable Estrada-Rivero was worse though because that fight was actually competitive.
