Video Hype: Celestino Caballero Really, Really, Really Wants to Fight Juan Manuel Lopez
Celestino Caballero's English isn't perfect, but I think anyone will get the gist of what he's saying here. Caballero, who fights Jason Litzau on November 27 in Las Vegas, has been trying to land a fight with Juan Manuel Lopez for over a year now. He has called him out at every turn. He even showed up to the Lopez-Marquez weigh-in, and got into a bit of a scuffle with members of Team Lopez.
With Lopez beating Rafael Marquez on November 6 and Caballero popping up over and over to keep calling him a coward, the time feels beyond right to finally match these two. HBO obviously has interest in Caballero and has shown plenty of love for Lopez in the past, though Lopez's last two fights have been televised by Showtime. Caballero has to deal with Litzau later this month, but I think there is definitely a groundswell of support for this fight among hardcore boxing fans, and hardcore boxing fans are the target of interest for either of them fighting on TV anyway.

He's right
Caballero is a hard fighter. C’mon JML, show me something.

I obviously think the fight should happen, and that there is nothing better for either guy.
(Outside of Gamboa, anyway)
But I think Lopez wins the fight if it happens anyway.

Me too, which is why I don’t understand why he’s been ducking him for so long. I don’t think Caballero beats either Lopez or Gamboa. But maybe it’s the same kind of problem that Paul Williams runs into… he’s too tall for the division and people don’t want to give up that much advantage.

Fire Steve Addazio.
And I have to be honest, I’m a Lopez fan, but it’s flat out ducking. Whenever they ask Lopez about Caballero in Puerto Rico, he toes the party line: “from an economic point of view, it’s not a lucrative fight”… that’s garbage and he knows it. Caballero has made sure that if this fight happens, people (at the very least everybody in Puerto Rico) will buy it because Caballero has been talking soooooooooo much.

I always feel the same about Floyd/Manny too: I think Floyd wins the fight if it happens, but there is no doubt in my mind that the fight not being made is due to a massive duck on his part. It’s kind of weird being in a position where the guy you think will win is ducking the other guy. Normally the underdog is the guy who ducks.

Lopez should fight him.
I’m tired of the Age of “I’ll fight whoever seems safe.”
“What’s the easiest fight where we can make the most money, relatively speaking?”
Anyone who buys that Lopez-Caballero wouldn’t make money is a sucker. Caballero is no major star, but either of the big two networks would pay handsomely for that fight and Lopez himself can draw a decent crowd in the U.S., and a good one in Puerto Rico, where the fight would be pretty big. And I get the feeling Caballero would gladly fight him in Puerto Rico.

In the PR press they’re reporting that Lopez’s camp is now looking at Elio Rojas… Okay, so Caballero is not a lucrative option but Rojas is? Come on! I think Trinidad Sr., while also sticking to the Lopez party line, made it very clear: it’s a big risk fight for not enough money. It’s not about the money per se, it’s more about the perceived risk for the money. The fight would, undoubtedly do well, but Lopez probably thinks that he should milk his money train a bit more before he gets in the ring with someone that has a legitimate chance of beating him. I can understand that from a business perspective, but it still pisses me off, especially when he talks about “fighting the best”…

What about Litzau?
Shouldn’t look passed a fight… even if it is with a guy who Caballero can knock out with one hand tied behind his back.
