Bad Left Hook Live Boxing Results and Commentary: Amir Khan v. Marcos Maidana

HBO has boxing live tonight, too, and it's a good one. In the main event, Amir Khan defends his WBA junior welterweight belt against the man he was earlier this year accused of ducking, big-punching Marcos Maidana of Argentina. It's Khan's first Las Vegas main event, and Golden Boy is obviously hoping he becomes a flagship star, but that could all crash tonight very easily. In the co-feature, another pair of intriguing junior welterweights collide as Lamont Peterson faces Victor Ortiz. We will do our best to bring live coverage of the main event after the Showtime card ends.

NOTE: Please do not post "spoilers" about the Showtime card in this thread.

Tonight's menu

Teriyaki glazed ribeyes, grilled asparagus, 2 Peronis (while grilling), and, with dinner, a nice Argentinian Malbec (in honor of tonight’s winner). Good fights, good times in the TBR household.

R1 10-9 Ortiz

Very technical, feeling-out kind of round. Ortiz a little better, though Ortiz cut on an accidental head butt.

by The Boxer Rebellion on Dec 11, 2010 9:45 PM EST via mobile reply actions

10-9 Ortiz

Peterson is definitely feeling those punches when Ortiz darts in, but Ortiz is leaving himself open to a counter

Peterson is doing the best he can here, but Ortiz is faster and has better fundamentals.

Someone needs to tell Victor that there’s ten rounds in this fight because every time I watch him fight, he always seems to stop fighting after the fourth or fifth round. It’s like he gets discouraged that he hasn’t finished the guy already.

it'll do nothing

They’ll bring him back in a few months and call it “controversial majority draw against Lamont Peterson in December” and give him another shot guy to trounce while they keep trying to make him a star. I’m sorry, but the guy just does not have “it.” He’s a good fighter. Talented. Generally fun to watch. But he’s not a breakout star type.

Maidana throws a punch right away when Khan goes tries to tap gloves. Khan working his jab outside. Maidana does land a right, Khan takes it. Maidana is CHASING him and SWINGING WILD. But Khan is so fast. Khan winging hard shots now! Great jab by Khan. The speed diffrence is very obvious. Maidana digs a shoulder into Khan when they tie up. Khan with four shots. That speed is awesome. Khan digging in in combination. Maidana came out wild but he’s slowed down. Khan dominating this round. BIG BODY SHOT AND DOWN GOES MARCOS MAIDANA!

OH THAT WAS BRUTAL! He’s hurt but he’s going to fight on! Khan going at him! Khan lands a left hook after the bell!

Khan coming out throwing his hands. Sharp, hard shots landing. Maidana might as well be a practice dummy right now. Left hook Maidana doesn’t quite land flush. Uppercut Khan. Khan still drilling him, now back to the body. Khan is breaking him. This is really impressive so far.

And it could change at any moment. That’s the appeal of this fight.

Khan pounding on him again. Left hook to the body by Khan. Khan dominating another round. Maidana can’t do anything with him. Nothing at all. Khan back to the body. Now landing hard shots upstairs. Maidana with a body shot.

Khan-Maidana R3

Khan with a right hand over the top. Left hooks flying now. Khan gets caught off balance, and Maidana finds him with a right! Maidana pressing now! Maidana is SWINGING! Khan moving away. Maidana is awake. Khan finds his footing, gets his range back, and goes back to work. Maidana to the body with a left. Now Khan lets a combo go. Far closer round than the first two, but it’s going to be hard for Maidana to win rounds without something super special like a knockdown. He just can’t outbox Khan.

Khan-Maidana R4

We’re now at a point where Khan’s starting to “run” instead of just move. Not all the time, but sometimes. Khan with more combinations. Nice right by Khan. Great offense again from Khan, now he’s moving in and out again. Maidana with a few little shots, and then he just chases Khan around the ring throwing cartoonish punches. Like he HAS to hit Khan RIGHT THIS SECOND RIGHT NOW. Maidana’s keeping this very interesting with his approach. Maidana with a body shot, Khan complains it was low. Didn’t seem low. Maidana doing much, much better the last two rounds. And I still don’t think he’s doing enough to win rounds, but I never thought he could win a decision.

Khan-Maidana R5

I do think Khan may have come out too fast, but frankly that Maidana got up from those nasty body shots is kind of amazing. Hell, maybe the game plan technically worked, Maidana just didn’t stay down. Maidana corners Khan, who ties up quickly. Good combo from Khan. Khan with another nice flurry of punches. Maidana with a few shots in return. Cortez warning Maidana for…Cortez offenses. I don’t know.

He’s taking a point from him. Hall of Famer, everyone.

Great uppercut by Khan. Khan landing good shots again now. Maidana still hunting for that right to the head. Maidana is keeping it interesting and has made it a fight. Khan isn’t getting to cruise.

Now Cortez manhandles Maidana. HALL OF FAME!

Khan with four blows in combination. Khan fans come alive. This has been another round for him, and despite Maidana’s moments, back to dominant. Maidana is recklessly pursuing Khan at this point. Khan-Maidana R7

Lederman’s given Maidana a couple rounds, including the last round. The last round wasn’t even close and it was obviously in Khan’s favor. There were a couple earlier that were sort of close, but the last round was not even remotely close.

Big uppercut by Maidana! Khan takes it, though. He’s showing a little bit of chin tonight, and good stuff at that. Maidana is a marvel, though. I still don’t think he’s that good of a fighter, but he just won’t stop. Khan eats two overhand rights, and he takes them. Neither was perfect, but there’s the uppercut again. Khan better wake up to that. There it is again. Maidana eats some blows. This has been a really good round.

Uppercuts again.

Great uppercut by Khan. Nice right by Khan. He’s really in control now. Maidana, mentally, may be tiring as much as he is physically. He’s tried to find those big shots all night and just can’t get the right distance for one to land totally flush. He can scrape him, and he can land, but not how he needs to. Maidana slips, Cortez rules a slip. Good left hook to the body by Maidana. Khan rakes him with speed again. Another good uppercut by Khan. Speed again.

Khan-Maidana R12

I really think Maidana needs the knockout, but I didn’t give him a couple of those rounds some did earlier. One I think was just a pure Khan round without question that Lederman gave to Maidana. Maidana with uppercuts again! Shot to the back of the head, I guess. Cortez warns. Cortez has to get out of the way. Maidana laying on the pressure again. Maidana leaving EVERYTHING HE’S GOT in the ring! Khan just covering and trying to hide. Maidana continues to lay in the uppercuts. He’s going to need something big with 40 seconds left to go. Khan covering and running and not really fighting anymore. I mean flat out running. Let’s call it what it is. I like him, too, but it is what it is. Now Khan fires! Just to shut me up. Khan LETS HIS HANDS GO AT THE END!

Fighters do what they got to do though

If he wanted to prove a point re. his chin, do you think he did? He survived an assault in the 10th

by TheQuestforMerlin on Dec 11, 2010 11:38 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, sure. But as an Amir Khan fan, I hope he leaves the chin question at that.

Me too, totally agree

I think Khan has more skill to show. But this was his toughest fight yet, and he’s still a kid. I’m looking forward to his future bouts

I think he felt he needed to prove he could take Maidana's punch, and he did that

What we learned tonight

Maidana’s got a goddamn chin on him.

Maidana could use a little work on his cardio, but he has enough heart to nearly pull that sucker out.

Khan has good bodywork, but not the ring smarts to stick with it.

Khan needs to learn how to block an uppercut.

When Khan’s on his game, he’s got the skill and speed to just go through people like a buzzsaw. He’s also got enough heart to survive some really rough moments.

I also will say that Maidana’s better than I gave him credit for recently. Not because I think his skills are better, but his x-factor is his pure relentless nature. You cannot count him out.

The holding by Khan in that fight drove me fucking nuts

Cortez completely removed Maidana’s ability to fight inside with that shit. Every time they get close, Khan either grabs an arm or gets a muay thai clinch on Maidana’s head. ridiculous.

Khan<<<<<<<PacMan

Fundamentally, Manny loves to scrap. Khan, not so much. I think Maidana wins a rematch, and Bradley wins handily over Khan.

by The Boxer Rebellion on Dec 11, 2010 11:47 PM EST via mobile reply actions

as awesome as that 10th round was, i don’t think it would happen again in a rematch. maidana is a beast, and he wanted to prove something (as SC said earlier) on his 2nd HBO headliner. if there was a rematch, you bet your ass roach won’t let him war it out with maidana

1st post tonight

Great fight, wish Cortez would have let them fight some more. Love Maidana, gained a lot of respect for Kahn tonight. Wasn’t big at all at the point being taken away.

I wish judges’ scores would reflect who stands in there and fights. I love guys who can stick and move, but Kahn was running for half the fight and I hate to see that. He is so much faster than Maidana that he should have just side stepped, created an angle, and punished him like great fighters do. He looked a little like Andre Dirrell in this fight, and I was disappointed in that.

They won't fight again though

The only reason Freddie Roach let Khan take this fight was because Maidana looked so bad against Chop-Chop.

good fight

I thought Khan fought smart enough against an incredibly heavy-handed fighter. He got through despite his chin—yes, with a bit of running in the later half. But, when your weakness is as obvious as Khan’s is, how can you hate if he’s trying his best to protect it against such a strong opponent?

Props to both fighters for a good fight.
