Wolak-Pinzon R1

Pinzon has old school short trunks. Pinzon doing hard work on the inside, swinging away on Wolak. This could be a pretty good fight. Wolak bulling straight at him and trying to hit the body. Pinzon has height and reach going for him, but not much speed and doesn’t seem to have a lot on his shots just yet. Wolak standing right inside, but Pinzon landing more I think. Wolak has no fear of or respect for Pinzon at all, and ends the round pretty nicely before a right hand whacks him. Close round.

10-10, Wolak pressured well but Pinzon landed more clean shots

Wolak-Pinzon R2

Both throwing heavy leather early in the round. Wolak GOES DOWN ON A LEFT HOOK! THAT CAUGHT HIM! He’s wobbly. He got up way too fast. Wolak is in bad shape. Pinzon SWINGING on him now! Pinzon going at him! Tags him with a right! Rights and lefts and Wolak doesn’t know how to tie up. Pinzon is way too jumpy. Right uppercut gets in! Pinzon REALLY going for it! Wolak standing up to it, but DOES NOT know how to hold. Finally he grabs up. Pinzon may be punching himself out. Wolak is doing nothing. Wolak getting BATTERED now! Pinzon just throwing and throwing. Right hand by Wolak. Pinzon tiring now. Wolak may have his legs back, and he’s throwing lefts to the head and body.

Well then.

Pinzon starting to eat a few. Right hand Wolak, now WOLAK is pressuring! This looks like a parking lot brawl now. These guys are winging tired bombs. Wolak gets back in it enough late to keep it at 10-8, because this was bordering on 10-7.

Pinzon 10-8
Pinzon 20-18

Wolak-Pinzon R3

Wolak just coming straight at him again. This guy has one speed, but it’s a fun speed. Wolak starting to do some effective work. Neither guy is throwing the prettiest shots, but they’re fighting. Wolak starting to take real control of this round. Not attractive, but effective. Good right by Wolak. Pinzon is incredibly raw and starting to take some good shots. Great bounce back round from Wolak.

Wolak-Pinzon R4

Wolak’s blows starting to land with some authority, but Pinzon also isn’t backing down. Commentary on this show is pretty good so far, I should note. Pinzon popped with another good right. Wolak obviously isn’t in peak shape since he’s here on short notice and fighting heavier than he’d prefer, but I’ll say that looking at this and seeing Wolak before at his best, Chavez would have his way with him at this point. A couple of years ago, maybe not, but under Roach, Chavez would have a good, easy gameplan.

Good right Wolak, good right Pinzon. Wolak is just imposing his will though. He’s taken over this fight in a big way. He’s getting hit, but Pinzon now has nothing on his shots. Pretty entertaining brawl, too. Good left hook by Wolak.

Wolak-Pinzon R5

Pinzon throwing shots to the body, but Wolak just absorbs them and comes right back at him. Wolak snapping his head back and side-to-side pretty frequently. Not massive shots, but clean and Pinzon doesn’t see them coming. In natural skills, I don’t think either of these guys are all that good, but Wolak is better-trained, more experienced, and tough as nails. Pinzon is raw, can’t use his reach, and punched himself out in the second round. Pinzon looks like a fighter, not a boxer. Wolak just all over him. Pinzon probably doesn’t make the distance in this one. GREAT combination by Wolak, and Pinzon staggers! HUGE SHOTS BY WOLAK NOW! Wolak starting to really pound on him! Measured, steady blows. Pinzon might make this bell, but he’s in trouble now.

Wolak 10-9
Wolak 48-47

All Wolak now.

Wolak-Pinzon R6

Wolak drilling him with shots to the head. He seems to have Pinzon simply overmatched now. It’s two very different classes of fighter at this point. Pinzon can’t see those right hands coming, because he’s just never looking for it. Left hand rocks Pinzon again. Not a hook, lust sort of a straight arm punch that I wouldn’t call a jab either. Pinzon getting hurt on the ropes again. He’s a tough kid — taking clean blows over and over. Pinzon staggered a little again. There are 40 seconds left in the round. Wolak isn’t going overboard pressing, he’s just wearing Pinzon out. Rights and lefts again. Referee Jack Reiss should consider taking a close look starting next round. Pinzon is well out of his depth and starting to take a real beating.

Wolak just coming right at him once again. Pinzon’s done for. Hard right by Wolak! Another one clips Pinzon. Another right hand. Right-left by Wolak. Pinzon lands a couple, but just no mustard on those shots. If Wolak stops Pinzon, it’ll be his first-ever stoppage after round 6, according to the Top Rank graphic. Right hand AND PINZON STAGGERS! Reiss stops the fight. That was a good stoppage, but the fans missed that Pinzon was going down if he hadn’t just fallen onto Wolak’s shoulders.

Garcia-Lontchi R1

“Why change what’s not fixed?” Great line.

The speed difference on these two flicking their jabs is stunning after the Wolak-Pinzon fight, which looked like it was underwater at moments. Garcia shooting a nice looking jab. Lontchi looks like he did last year against Lopez. I doubt he’s ever really in this fight, but he’ll make for some rounds for Garcia. Good 1-2 shakes Lontchi. That had some rocket fuel on it. I’m not even sure it landed on anything but glove, really. That pushed Lontchi right back. Good opening round for Garcia.

Garcia-Lontchi R2

Garcia controlling the opening minute with his jab again. Garcia’s got a locked in look tonight. Lontchi comes under with a little uppercut, but it’s a bit short. Good jab from Lontchi. Right hand by Lontchi is a bit short. Lontchi is probably better than his mostly creampuff record. He’s pretty quick, fights smart — not a great fighter, but no reason he can’t be a terrific gatekeeper sort who scores the occasional upset. Better round for Lontchi, and I think you can argue he took the round. Garcia was pretty well neutralized in the second half of the round. But I give it to him for landing his jab cleaner and Lontchi mostly being a hair or two short on his shots.

Garcia-Lontchi R3

Garcia’s jab continues to be the fight’s best punch. Lontchi is showing his speed, but he’s just not quite landing. Right hand by Garcia. Right hand by Garcia. Garcia with a left hook, then a really good one to the body. Right hand from Lontchi lands. Left hooks again by Garcia. Lontchi backed down on a left now. Not a bad fight so far, and Garcia is starting to open up more.

Garcia-Lontchi R4

Lontchi just can’t get home, like a John L. Smith blitz package. Garcia has him on the ropes and drills him in the body. Lontchi staying with his back to the ropes, but works his way off. I think Robert’s right about Mikey: he really is a bit too cautious. I like his patience, but he really does lay back just a bit too much. Lontchi with a little combo, gets a right hand in. Garcia clips him with a left hook. There’s a hard jab from Garcia. Flurry from Mikey, but nothing lands clean. Garcia’s just winning these rounds. He’s just a bit better than Lontchi, and it’s clear. He’s a good looking young fighter.

Half of the round left. Sidorenko is wobbly. Left hook again. Right hand again. Right hand again. Left hook again. Donaire just destroying him in there, but patiently so. Another right hand. Left hook by Sidorenko sneaks in. Sidorenko popped again, and wobbled again on a right hand. Nonito is in seek and destroy mode in there. He looks really strong at 118. Well, here we go. This shouldn’t last long. Right hand Donaire. He’s staying calm, and the first minute goes by. Sidorenko is bleeding from the nose. Sidorenko coming at him. Oh! Good shot by Sidorenko! Nonito maybe laying back too much this round. Almost lazily jabbing. Left hook misses by a mile from Donaire. Donaire with a right and a left! I still give Maidana about a 25% chance of scoring the knockout

But about a 70% chance that Khan shuts him out on the cards and embarrasses him. The other 5% is that Maidana catches Khan with a big shot that he gets up from, Khan gets tentative and defensive, and we get an actual competitive fight.

Soto with a nice uppercut. Antillon just coming right at him. Headbutt in close. Antillon is not here to mess around. Soto with GREAT uppercuts. Antillon throws Soto to the ground — quite on purpose. Antillon’s a mean fucker.

Uppercut again by Soto when they come back. Soto pumping his jab. Soto looks much faster and just better. Low blow by Antillon. Jesus Christ! Another exchange. Soto getting pressed to the ropes, but then he DRILLS Antillon with better punches.

Antillon laying on him, but Soto really starting to control this and pound on Antillon. Antillon just leaning into shots, and he’s SO slow compared to Soto. Soto hurts him with a right. Soto looks great. THIS IS WHAT I WANTED! He can fight, I’ve always thought he can fight, and it’s great to see him do it against someone who isn’t a prohibitive underdog. ANOTHER headbutt by Antillon.

Antillon with a good left, a low blow, and Soto rocks him back. Antillon with a nice uppercut! Now he’s doing good work. Soto pops him with another good uppercut. Goddamn, this is a hell of a fight already. Soto OPENS UP with his speed. Another great round.

Soto slowing down. Well there’s an uppercut from Soto right as I say that. Antillon targeting the body. They’re painting Soto has a ducked fighter. That’s pretty hilarious.

Antillon strays low again, but that time didn’t seem to be on purpose at all, so Corona says nothing, and Soto didn’t react either. But THERE’S the low blow that’s going to cost him a point.

Soto-Antillon R7

Antillon just charges at him again. Soto with the uppercuts. Antillon landed 43 punches in the sixth round, about double Soto’s lands. Lead rights from Antillon. Soto is doing a pretty good job getting off the ropes, it’s just he’s constantly being pushed there. Antillon building some steam. He’s wearing on Soto and just won’t stay off of him. Antillon continues to throw. Soto with a GREAT body shot. Right hand Antillon, but Soto counters harder with the left. Winnable round for either with a minute left. Soto peppering him, and staggers him into the ropes, but Antillon just comes right back at him! Antillon slips, but winds up wide open, and Soto is going at him. BIG right by Soto! Big left hook! Soto ripping away! Just pounding on Antillon to end the round!

Another great round. This fight is awesome.

Soto-Antillon R8

This time they actually tap gloves. Antillon’s cuts don’t look good, but he’s still coming forward. Left hook to the body by Soto. Crowd is really getting into this one. Soto RIPPING with uppercuts. Antillon had landed a right there, but Soto’s too fast for him. Antillon throwing and throwing and landing some. Antillon is tiring, I think. Soto on the other hand is looking fresher again. But there’s a good right by Antillon. He’s just not able to pressure Soto as easily anymore. Uppercut by Soto. And another. Soto caught in the corner, and Antillon comes alive momentarily, but Soto gets out. Good body shots by Soto to close the round.

Another foul, and they have a moment to talk to each other.Antillon pressing again. Good right to the body by Antillon. Soto getting hit plenty in the first half of this round. Right and left by Antillon. Antillon is fighting like a guy who’s behind should fight. Soto throwing in bunches with 30 seconds left in the round. Body shot by Soto. Another one. Good charge, but not enough to steal the round.

Soto-Antillon R10

Hell, now Soto really looks a bit tired. But there’s a right uppercut from Soto, and then the left follows. Antillon coming in recklessly now, and again he pushes Soto to the ground, but that one wasn’t as blatant as the one earlier. Antillon still just charging at him. Soto matadors Antillon through the ropes for a moment. Antillon with a right upstairs. Antillon digging to the body. Another right upstairs by Antillon. Soto could be in a bit of trouble, as he staggers into the corner a little and antillon keeps throwing. But Soto gets out, and lands good shots. So many low blows not being called. Arthur Abraham would shit.

Antillon with more hard body shots. Antillon opening up offensively, and here comes Soto late in the round once again. Soto staggers him! Antillon hurt! SOTO UNLOADING! FIVE SECONDS LEFT! ANTILLON BEING HIT, AND HE’LL SURVIVE THE ROUND!

Tough round to score, I had Antillon before that ending flurry, but he got hurt, and he wasn’t dominating before that or anything.

Soto-Antillon R11

Antillon ripping away on the ropes now. Soto saving the reserves again it appears. What a great fight this is. Soto countering, Antillon still bulling at him. Antillon is completely out of gas, but he won’t relent. Soto is pretty tired, too. This is grueling stuff. A minute left, and Soto stings him with a hook. Soto is doing so well in the center of the ring. Soto throwing again. Antillon with a left hook. Antillon landing big shots now! Soto wobbly a little bit. But then Soto comes back late! Goddamn!

They waste 10 seconds hugging it out, bitch. Weird idea from Antillon, who needs the knockout. Soto slips. He’s pretty dog tired. They both are. Soto is definitely on his bike this round, but he’s throwing, too. Left hook by Antillon. Soto doesn’t want to risk anything, and rightly so, really. I can’t blame him. 20 seconds to go. Crowd rises to their feet as the bell approaches. Great, great fight.

Lovemore really does look sturdy at the weight. Big arms. Alvarez’s enormous legs and wide upper body show how they really stack up at the weight though. First minute is feeling out. Alvarez shoots a left, but misses. Jab by N’dou. Alvarez swings fast and hard, but doesn’t get his man on the left or the right. N’dou not showing any fear, but he’s quite aware of Alvarez’s power. N’dou with a jab. Alvarez with a couple quick uppercuts when N’dou gets close enough. I don’t think N’dou really landed a clean shot in the entire round.

Alvarez-N'dou R2

Alvarez with a shot to the body, and he’s definitely dictating the pace. I can’t really figure out what Lovemore’s tactic is so far. Alvarez backs him down with a right hand. Good jab by Alvarez. 1-2 from Alvarez, all gloves. Alvarez misses a right, and a left behind it. Hook to the body by Alvarez. Now he has Lovemore caught on the ropes. N’dou is complaining a lot about low shots. Lovemore to the ropes again, but he punches his way off. Not landing, but throwing. Jab from Alvarez pushes Lovemore back again, then a good body shot gets in. Body right, and a left hook upstairs by Alvarez. Alvarez targeting the body, N’dou really doesn’t like it. Another fairly easy round for Alvarez.

Alvarez starting to open up, and there’s nothing coming back from N’dou. Alvarez threw a beautiful double jab/right hook to the body/left hook to the head combo at one point.

I’m hoping next weekend that the SHO card, which starts at 9, will end before the HBO main event. Ortiz-Peterson is first on HBO and that card starts at 9:45, though since they love Ortiz and the Peterson brothers’ stories, we might get a half hour of sad piano music video packages.

I think it's just a difference between business models

GBP would rather get the wider exposure, Top Rank would rather maximize the revenue from every single card.

Alvarez-N'dou R3

Alvarez able to impose his will at…will, as I expected he would. His body shots are sharp, he looks faster, and he’s clearly just a better fighter than N’dou, and stronger. N’dou stuck on the ropes, then takes a wild right hand swing to get off. There’s a 1-2 from N’dou. Good flurry coming back from Alvarez moments later, head and body shots. Nice work again from Alvarez! He’s got “it” — it’s the way he attacks. He’s patient and he’s confident, he’s strong, and he doesn’t seem to waste energy ever. I think mentally he’s well beyond his age.

Alvarez throws beautiful combinations, and it looks like he’s starting to get through N’dou’s guard more and more. He’s also trying to time N’dou and counter with a right uppercut… he tried it a couple of times last round but didn’t quite have it.

Alvarez-N'dou R4

Alvarez with good, hard shots. He’s able to back N’dou off with just about everything, and N’dou has no intention of really taking the initiative. He’s also not really countering much. He’s playing a waiting game and against an aggressive guy like Alvarez, the best he might be trying to do is survive in there. There’s a good right from N’dou. I should challenge his aggressiveness more often. N’DOU DOING NOTHING. Didn’t work. N’dou shooting a jab, but not to set up anything, simply to disrupt timing and keep Alvarez away from him. Alvarez closes the round strong.

Alvarez 10-9
Alvarez 40-36

At this rate he’ll win this going away.

Alvarez is head-hunting more than you might like to see, and N’dou is starting to do a few clever little things defensively to try and neutralize that. But N’dou still isn’t landing enough. Though he looks in control halfway through this round. There’s a left hook to the body by Alvarez, and now he makes a charge. Uppercut lands for Alvarez. Good jab by Alvarez. Right hand N’dou, but Alvarez shoots two punches in return and both land. Good second half of the round for Alvarez, took the fight right back.

Alvarez-N'dou R7

There are moments in the fight where Alvarez seems a little frustrated. Not a big thing, but like he’s looking for something and then N’dou instantly takes it away. N’dou doing some good work here and there, but Alvarez is landing better, harder shots for the most part in this fight. But there’s some nice offense from N’dou at center ring. He was close last round, and might be taking this one just barely.

The pace has sort of plateaued in this fight. Not real fast, not slow. N’dou being warned for the final time for holding behind the head. Right hand Alvarez when they come back. Left hook Alvarez catches glove. That one clips the chin, though. Alvarez has a weird habit of opening his mouth and letting his mouth piece almost fall out. That or his mouth piece isn’t fitting well tonight. He’s done that a lot.

Alvarez-N'dou R9

Good little explosion from Alvarez, but he’s having trouble landing those clean, devastating blows that have highlighted his fights. N’dou has been cautious all night defensively, and only really gets aggressive when trying for the occasional home run punch, which serves the purpose of getting Alvarez to cover up or step back. A right hand gets past N’dou’s glove that time, though. Wild right by N’dou, that time he almost got countered really hard. That could’ve been a game-changer for Alvarez had it landed. Alvarez really seems to want the knockout, but isn’t going to risk anything to get it.

Good right by N’dou. And another one. Alvarez steps back and resets. Now N’dou starting to look for good power shots a little more. Another right clips Alvarez. Another one. Alvarez is looking kind of lax defensively, almost lulled into getting too comfortable. “Canelo” chant goes up briefly to spur him on. Alvarez pressuring a bit more in the second half of the round. Nice uppercut from Alvarez in a flurry. N’dou puts a shoulder into Alvarez on the ropes, that gets a rise from the crowd.

Alvarez really going after N’dou this round and looking for the big shots, but I just don’t think N’dou is going to open up enough for Alvarez to close this thing out. About a minute left of a round that has been all Alvarez. N’dou on his bike now with 30 seconds to go. Then he gets trapped so he covers up and waits for a window to get out of there. N’dou throwing some slappy shots at the 10-second marker, and it’s over.
