Also in action are Cubans Richard Abril (lightweight, 13-2-1, 6 KO), heavyweight Luis Ortiz (4-0, 3 KO), cruiserweight Pedro Rodriguez (3-0, 3 KO), and junior middleweight Inocente Fiz (4-0, 2 KO). oh, it sets an all-time record all right
just not for number of posts :)

no, it'll be number of posts
I predict 6000.
We’ll see how close I get.

With so many fights, you could talk to yourself and get more discussion than October all together.
Still searching for an alive Dan Tucker.
A guys I used to know....
A guys I used to know is fighting on the undercard; calls himself “The Viking,” Erik Leander…. I think he used to be trained by Panama Lewis; you guys know anything about him boxing wise?
I don't
I don’t know much about most of the guys on the undercard. All I know is he lost his last fight but is being put into a should-win tonight based on paper records.

OH SNAP
There’s a Cedric Boswell-“What the Heck” Beck fight on this show, too. HOT DAMN
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
about to get started with the first fight
This is an ENTIRE card, so we’re talking tons of fights. I’m going to sit here all night. Talking to nobody.
So if anyone wants to use this as an open thread to shoot the shit, go on.

Bad Left Hook

first fight
Heavyweights
Watson Pierre (1-0, 1 KO) v. Yasnay Consuegra (3-0, 1 KO)
Yasnay is another Cuban.
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
and down goes Pierre in 30 seconds
The comment on him from the commentary was “He doesn’t like to train.”
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
Pierre survives the first round
He just sort of runs at Consuegra with some of the ugliest looking punches you’ll ever see.
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
so Pierre's having a point taken for a deliberate rabbit much
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
Pierre goes down on a couple of rights
Stays down.
Yasnay Consuegra KO-2 Watson Pierre
Not a lot to tell about Consuegra, but I’m taking notes to do a bit of a prospect report later. Because, you know, WHY NOT?
Bad Left Hook

next fight
Junior Middlweights
Inocente Fiz (4-0, 2 KO) v. Anthony Woods (7-14, 3 KO)
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
Woods spent the entire first round running around the ring. I mean there’s no other way to describe it.
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
that's exactly what i was thinking
There is no safety in numbers, or in anything else--James Thurber, 1939
Woods fights a bit more in the second but not a lot more. He’s trying to keep this about as ugly as he can. The body shots Fiz is getting in when he can catch up to Woods — who is now straight up running again — are bothering Woods.
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
I really wish for fights like this
Promoters would keep a couple of pairs of odd-colored gloves in the back, and force one guy to wear blue or yellow so I could tell them apart.
Woods is making this uglier than all hell. Fiz looks pretty frustrated, which really might be good for him when it’s over. There are plenty of guys in the pro game who will make you look bad. Woods gets a bit hurt late in the round, and takes a shot just after the bell, too.
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
tuned in late--
any way to tell these two. guys apart? I hate clone fights.
There is no safety in numbers, or in anything else--James Thurber, 1939
Woods is the guy who’s either left-handed, right-handed, or squared up and is mostly running around. Fiz is slightly darker skinned and not fighting like some kind of weird Roy Jones knockoff.

Fiz pummels Woods a bit this round, finally catching him with combination punches. Good stuff.
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
Gets stopped at the start of the sixth round. Woods didn’t really want to be in there or the referee didn’t see any reason. Woods isn’t complaining.

Aquino fighting inside and targeting the body in the Mexican tradition. He was born in Mexico and now lives in North Carolina, apparently. To me he looks the rougher of the two, Salinas might be a bit more technically sound. Aquino loves him some uppercuts inside, too. Fun first round, I thought Aquino took that one.

Salinas’ nose bloodied and a small cut under his right eye.

it's in Florida
Roy does “give back to fans” these days. He was also instrumental in helping Alabama get a boxing commission with Deontay Wilder. It’s another reason I think Roy discovered too late how much he really loved boxing — earlier in his career he would be criticized for not showing up to promotional stuff, for being lazy about appearances, being moody about out of ring obligations. Now he’s known as a jovial guy who goes the extra mile.
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
Yeah, he needs to "give back"

You are 100% right on RJJ, which is maddening, because had he been more media-friendly in his prime, he could have been a transformative figure for American boxing. He had the sort of awesome skills that could have made him a mainstream American sports star.

Aquino is very busy inside, I like the way he fights. Salinas is landing some decent shots here and there, but Aquino is really outworking him.
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
Aquino fights like I play boxing video games. Salinas got some really good shots in late in the round.
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
Teddy Atlas would be dying on commentary right now
Salinas still hasn’t figured out he needs to take a step back and drill Aquino as he comes in.
I’ve got it 2-1 Aquino through three. Salinas definitely took the third and might have taken the first, too.
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
Salinas really starting to land some nice stuff in the fourth round, though he got knocked back a little late in the round. Neither of these guys have much power.
I had it 2-2, but if anything I see it that way or 3-1 for Salinas. Good little fight.

I am so sick of hearing people insist that American boxing needs heavyweights. It doesn’t. American boxing needs people to stop whining about the heavyweights and to re-educate potential fight fans to believe that the smaller weight classes are awesome, which Top Rank and Golden Boy have both done a good job with in recent years. And also that there are boxers outside of America. Almost none of my favorite fighters are American-born. Who cares? American heavyweight boxing is never coming back, guys. Never.

It’s just so hard to do what Roy did, because I’ve seen nobody — NOBODY — else in boxing with Roy’s absurd physical gifts. Nobody’s even close. Like, Mayweather’s a hell of an athlete, super fast, can’t fight like Roy. Pacquiao can’t fight like Roy. I’m not saying Roy was greater than they are, but he could do things they couldn’t, and vice versa. What Roy did was quite specific to Roy’s abilities, IMO.

They’ve tried something like that before, but it didn’t pan out. Kell Brook vs. Mike Jones will get ordered as a title eliminator for one of the easy titles not long from now, so I suspect both guys will be biding their time until they get their shot.

as an aside
My mind just wandered to that awkward post-fight interview on Saturday with Arum and Antillon, which basically went:
Arum: (Miguel) Vazquez…holds another belt, we’ll get you a fight with him next…
Antillon: ………….yeth, but, I want to win the WBThee belt…
And you could sort of see Arum thinking, “Kid, I don’t think you understand that none of these belts mean anything anymore, so fight for the stupid belt I can get you a shot for.”
Kind of reminded me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44EmzHeaIT0 (Strong Language)

McCall flicking out an arm punch jab, but Oquendo’s getting him coming in just enough. McCall looks a lot like old Foreman in there. Good right by Oquendo. Right again by Oquendo. I’ll say this: I’ve sure as shit seen worse heavyweight fights. This year.

The commentators are calling this like McCall is doing anything but those arm punch jabs. Not that Oquendo looks great, either. I guess McCall does take this round, not that it was impressive. Or he didn’t. I don’t know. They’re both landing a couple punches per round.

James Toney. He’s been in there with all of ‘em. This is a good fighter. He’s a veteran. Oliver McCall is a veteran. He’s a freak o’ nature. You’d never believe this guy is 45 years old. Oquendo is doing himself no favors. He’s basically fighting on McCall’s turf. Not landing big clean shots. Not jabbing his way in. Both of them tying up. McCall not doing much either, but it’s his turf. But this round Oquendo is moving around a little more and throwing more. These “big shots” they keep talking about with McCall aren’t really all that big.

Right hand by Oquendo, but then Oquendo runs away from McCall’s punches. I mean that just looks bad, and he knows that. McCall is shoving Oquendo around all of a sudden and really starting to bull him around the ring, which looks great for McCall even without any big shots landing. Oquendo throwing, not landing. Now they hug. Right hand Oquendo. Now McCall slllloooowwwllllllyyyyy chases him down again. Oquendo with a right. This is probably the best round of the fight. For reals. Both of them got some shots in. Oquendo with another shot.

McCall is really pressuring. Or, you know, trying to. As best he can anymore. McCall misses a right hand, but the PBP guy is very excited about it. Oquendo just keeps picking at him from distance. This is a tricky fight now — I mean, you could score this for McCall on pressure, but it’s just…he’s so slow that it’s hard to count it as pressure. He’s just walking at Oquendo, who is saying, “No, I don’t want you to walk up and punch me in the face, so I’m going to move.” But Oliver is throwing big shots this round. Not landing them, but throwing them. But I guess he won this round.
