Bad Left Hook Live Boxing Results and Commentary: Fres Oquendo v. Oliver McCall

This evening at 7pm EST, GoFightLive.tv will have a live stream for $9.99 of a show at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Fla.

In the main event, 45-year-old former heavyweight champ Oliver McCall faces 37-year-old longtime contender Fres Oquendo. For those looking to see what might be coming for the future of the sport, there are a lot of good prospects on the show as well. In the best undercard fight, welterweight prospect Brad Solomon (15-0, 7 KO) takes on Anges Adjaho (25-3, 14 KO). Also in action are Cubans Richard Abril (lightweight, 13-2-1, 6 KO), heavyweight Luis Ortiz (4-0, 3 KO), cruiserweight Pedro Rodriguez (3-0, 3 KO), and junior middleweight Inocente Fiz (4-0, 2 KO). In another cruiserweight fight, Haitian prospect Azea Augustama (9-0, 6 KO) takes a big step-up bout against Epi Mendoza (30-10-1, 26 KO).

You're all free to use this as a Tuesday night open thread, too. Come on in and shoot the breeze about whatever while you get results from the show.

I don't

I don’t know much about most of the guys on the undercard. All I know is he lost his last fight but is being put into a should-win tonight based on paper records.

Woods fights a bit more in the second but not a lot more. He’s trying to keep this about as ugly as he can. The body shots Fiz is getting in when he can catch up to Woods — who is now straight up running again — are bothering Woods.

Woods is making this uglier than all hell. Fiz looks pretty frustrated, which really might be good for him when it’s over. There are plenty of guys in the pro game who will make you look bad. Woods gets a bit hurt late in the round, and takes a shot just after the bell, too.

it's in Florida

Roy does “give back to fans” these days. He was also instrumental in helping Alabama get a boxing commission with Deontay Wilder. It’s another reason I think Roy discovered too late how much he really loved boxing — earlier in his career he would be criticized for not showing up to promotional stuff, for being lazy about appearances, being moody about out of ring obligations. Now he’s known as a jovial guy who goes the extra mile.

I am so sick of hearing people insist that American boxing needs heavyweights. It doesn’t. American boxing needs people to stop whining about the heavyweights and to re-educate potential fight fans to believe that the smaller weight classes are awesome, which Top Rank and Golden Boy have both done a good job with in recent years. And also that there are boxers outside of America. Almost none of my favorite fighters are American-born. Who cares? American heavyweight boxing is never coming back, guys. Never.

It’s just so hard to do what Roy did, because I’ve seen nobody — NOBODY — else in boxing with Roy’s absurd physical gifts. Nobody’s even close. Like, Mayweather’s a hell of an athlete, super fast, can’t fight like Roy. Pacquiao can’t fight like Roy. I’m not saying Roy was greater than they are, but he could do things they couldn’t, and vice versa. What Roy did was quite specific to Roy’s abilities, IMO.

Roy was able to take advantage of his technical mistakes due to that athleticism, and boy did he make a lot of them. But when he was at his best, you could see the mistake, you would just get hit 3 more times trying to counter.

My mind just wandered to that awkward post-fight interview on Saturday with Arum and Antillon, which basically went:

Arum: (Miguel) Vazquez…holds another belt, we’ll get you a fight with him next…
Antillon: ………….yeth, but, I want to win the WBThee belt…

And you could sort of see Arum thinking, “Kid, I don’t think you understand that none of these belts mean anything anymore, so fight for the stupid belt I can get you a shot for.”

Lol, someone had some fun with Oquendo's wikipedia page:

“Oquendo turned pro in 1997 and won his first 22 bouts, including impressive victories over Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Riddick Bowe, Buster Douglas, and Lennox Lewis.”

by Quickhooks on Dec 7, 2010 11:26 PM EST reply actions

and this
Oquendo lost a clear unanimous decision to four-time former world heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield on November 10, 2006 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Clear my ass.

Oquendo throwing punches, and then McCall just sort of falls back into the ropes and bounces back out. Now they hug. Oquendo mostly trying to throw a long overhand right that he’s short on. Now they hug.

“Nobody’s ever broken Oliver McCall down.” OK.

McCall has nothing offensively in the first round.

Good to hear. I know I kind of bust on him sometimes during fights he’s calling, but he’s someone I enjoy. He’s genuinely enthusiastic about boxing and still obviously loves the sport.

McCall flicking out an arm punch jab, but Oquendo’s getting him coming in just enough. McCall looks a lot like old Foreman in there. Good right by Oquendo. Right again by Oquendo. I’ll say this: I’ve sure as shit seen worse heavyweight fights. This year.

The commentators are calling this like McCall is doing anything but those arm punch jabs. Not that Oquendo looks great, either. I guess McCall does take this round, not that it was impressive. Or he didn’t. I don’t know. They’re both landing a couple punches per round.

James Toney. He’s been in there with all of ‘em. This is a good fighter. He’s a veteran. Oliver McCall is a veteran. He’s a freak o’ nature. You’d never believe this guy is 45 years old. Oquendo is doing himself no favors. He’s basically fighting on McCall’s turf. Not landing big clean shots. Not jabbing his way in. Both of them tying up. McCall not doing much either, but it’s his turf. But this round Oquendo is moving around a little more and throwing more. These “big shots” they keep talking about with McCall aren’t really all that big.

Right hand by Oquendo, but then Oquendo runs away from McCall’s punches. I mean that just looks bad, and he knows that. McCall is shoving Oquendo around all of a sudden and really starting to bull him around the ring, which looks great for McCall even without any big shots landing. Oquendo throwing, not landing. Now they hug. Right hand Oquendo. Now McCall slllloooowwwllllllyyyyy chases him down again. Oquendo with a right. This is probably the best round of the fight. For reals. Both of them got some shots in. Oquendo with another shot.

McCall with a good shot, but then goes back to staying behind his old jab. Oquendo sneaking in little shots here and there. McCall can’t really get his right hand out of the holster, so to speak. I think that’s McCall’s corner, so let me try to do my impersonation of them:

McCall is really pressuring. Or, you know, trying to. As best he can anymore. McCall misses a right hand, but the PBP guy is very excited about it. Oquendo just keeps picking at him from distance. This is a tricky fight now — I mean, you could score this for McCall on pressure, but it’s just…he’s so slow that it’s hard to count it as pressure. He’s just walking at Oquendo, who is saying, “No, I don’t want you to walk up and punch me in the face, so I’m going to move.” But Oliver is throwing big shots this round. Not landing them, but throwing them. But I guess he won this round.

McCall is seeking the KO. I like that. He’s still got that in him. Oquendo with a right. Not much on it. But then McCall never looks like anyone has anything on their shots. Oquendo fighting like he needs the round too and given his history he probably does. Both raise their hands at the bell.

I had it 116-113 Oquendo. But I wouldn’t complain too loudly if it was anywhere from 116-112 McCall to 117-111 Oquendo. A lot of hard rounds to score. The commentators sound like they gave all the close rounds to McCall, while I gave most of them to Oquendo.
