Gerson Guerrero out of Donaire fight
Manuel Vargas, who fought for a minimumweight title in his last fight and who has never fought north of flyweight, takes over as the opponent. On the bright side, he has about as much of a chance of winning as Guerrero did - none. I guess that's the upside of Top Rank not even attempting to make any remotely competitive matchups with Donaire.

Has anyone mismanaged a career worse than Arum has done with Donaire? After he knocked Darchinyan out, the world was really his limit. Young and exciting and seemingly willing to take on challenges. He should have just stayed with Shaw. I highly doubt he thought that he would just spend his career headlining Pinoy Power 6, 13, 28 etc. for the rest of his career.
Then again, when you a Filipino fighter fighting at a low weight class, niche PPV shows are really your ceiling and no one knows this better than Top Rank (wait . . . )
Sad.
Top Rank has probably made more from Donaire headlining these shows than Shaw would have made with him on Showtime. HBO can preach pound-for-pound and best in boxing all they want but the truth is they have shown zero interest in anyone south of featherweight besides Juanma Lopez in years, and now Lopez is a feather anyway.

I disagree. I think Donaire had star potential. I don’t know if he still did nor do I know if he could ever be a star but I do know Gary Shaw would have kept him active. Maybe I’m overstating just how good he is. But I was at both his fights in ’07 and I thought he was a future PPV headliner. His 2008, injuries or not, was horrendous and all his career momentum is gone.
You may be right in that Arum is lining his pockets with these Pinoy Powers but I can’t help but wonder what could have been.
By the way, the one point I can’t disagree with you on is that Donaire would have had a hard time breaking onto an HBO card. It is sad that HBO Boxing has fallen to a point where we agree that a Nonito Donaire has almost no chance of getting a date but if I fought Robert Guerrero tomorrow at 154, HBO would surely televise.
