About You

Name: Mike Fareri

Age: 29. yeesh.

Occupation: facilities maintenance manager. basically when stores have maintenance problems are need renovations done, they call me and i send someone to do it.

Place of Residency: south philly

Have you boxed before. if so provide any details on your success/lack there of: I used to go to the local gym a lot (mickeys on 1900 chadwick st in philly) when i was kid, up till about age 13, never entered any competitions or anything for some reason. I was always more interested in training, promoting, managing aspects than getting punched in the head.

Boxing specific questions

Favorite current fighter: this is hard. saying manny really isnt cool anymore so i think ill say a tie between steve cunningham, josh clotty and edwin valero.

Favorite all-time fighter: rocky marciano. honerable mentions to joe frazier, meldrick taylor, mike mccallum, tyson, ricardo lopez, kostya tszyu, naz, terry norris, g-man, hagler, i can go on and on.

Best boxing memory: another really hard question. a couple come to mind. the night frankie randall deated jcc, seeing mike tyson live at the spectrum in 95, going to ac to watch gatti fight, pacmans and bernards defeats of dlh. watching prince charles williams vs merqui sosa live on espn. many more.

Favorite Fight: i should changed the questions to “fighter(s), fight(s)”. its next to impossible to narrow to one. marciano v. walcott 1, gman vs. jackson 1, tyson vs. ruddock 1. williams vs. sosa 1 just to name a few.

He was a great boxer

I didn’t actually watch him since I was very little I started watching his videos about 5 years ago, but he became my favorite just for the fact that if I talked to anyone about him the praise for him was incredible almost to the level of Tito Trinidad, the sad fact is that after all the praise you can sense the dissapointment in people when they talk about how his life turned out.

Unfortunately, that's a way of life at a law firm

It’s the same for junior associates as for paralegals, same for senior associates as juniors and same for partners as senior associates. All that changes is who is dishing out the punishment. Even the most senior partners at the firm have to take it from the clients. That’s one of the main reasons law firms get business – the clients can give them the work they don’t want to do in house at the times they don’t want to do it.

Have I boxed? Nope. Didn’t really get into boxing until I was an adult, and I probably wasn’t athletic enough anyway. Tried light sparring a couple of times, so I can at least appreciate some of the pain.

Current favorite fighter: Not too sure at the moment. Pre-trilogy, Marquez and Vazquez were my two favorite fighters, but that’s faded some lately, plus Marquez rubbed me the wrong way at the end of fight 3. Maybe Yuriorkis Gamboa.

All-time favorite fighter: Roy Jones Jr. And I can’t stand that he’s still boxing. Can’t even bring myself to buy any of his PPVs.

Best boxing memory: Maybe not the ‘best’, but the most prominent was Tyson-Golota. We probably had a hundred people crammed into an apartment to watch that one, and there was nearly a riot in the place when it ended.

Favorite fight: Hagler-Hearns. Corrales-Castillo I and the whole Marquez-Vazquez trilogy follow.

the thing with roy is, he was always saying how he would never ever stay too long in the game. He would go on and on about the dangers of staying too long and the dangers in general especially after mcclellan vs. benn. he said it over and over during his commentating days during the old BAD shows. He said Holyfield was staying in the game too long, kennedy mckinney as well, and a some others. rightfully so of course. he was dead on about those guys. he however, was at the end of the road when glenn johnson knocked him cold but has yet to hang them up himself.

its pretty damn fascinating.

Boxed before? Not really. I was a skinny bookworm growing up. I’ve messed around sparing a little, but nothing of significance.

Favorite current fighter: Probably Mosley at this point, though Andre Ward is a recent new favorite of mine.

Favorite all time fighter: Ali. As a student of American culture and a huge boxing fan, Ali and his complex legacy continue to fascinate me.

Best boxing memory: Probably Toney / Jirov, the final round. I had let boxing slide for other interests when this fight came around. I had been a Toney fan in the past (I still think he’s the all time funniest shit-talker in boxing), and this fight pulled me back into the sport big time.

Favorite fight: This is a hard one for me, but I might have to go with Corrales / Castillo.

The BLee2525 story

Name: Brian Lee

Age: 29

Occupation: Construction Engineer

Place of Residency: Charlottesville, VA

Ever Boxed?: No, though I was a pretty good high school wrestler, and my experience in that sport is what drew me to boxing in the first place.

Favorite current fighter: Cotto, with Pavlik a close 2nd

Favorite all-time fighter: Tito or Cotto

Best boxing memory: This is kind of interesting. In college, I worked security at a Great Lakes Regional boxing tournament that was a step towards Olympic qualifying. Over 2 nights, I saw some absolute wars, and some brutal KO’s. Several guys I saw those nights went on to have professional careers, most notably Andre Dirrell. One of the guys who eventually fought on “The Contender,” Rudy Cisneros, won a close decision over the “house” fighter at the Toledo Armory, and a riot nearly broke out. The single most impressive fighter from that tournament was a heavyweight named Robert Jacobs, who scored 2 one-punch knockouts in 2 fights (against guys in headgear, mind you), one over a guy who had mauled his opponent the night before. I can’t find where he ever got a Pro career started, though. But, holy shit. He connected with a right hand, and the guy he was fighting was out cold; turned 180 degrees, hit the canvas face first. In fucking headgear.

If I have to share a boxing memory that everybody else will remember, it’s probably Tito-De La Hoya.

Favorite fight: I had been a casual observer of boxing for a long time, but the fight that really sucked me back in enough to comment regularly on a blog about the sport was Cotto-Mosley.

Boxing specific questions

Favorite current fighter: Carl Froch as a Brit – can’t help but love the fact that he’s so open to taking on any challengers at any time, and is very rarely in a bad fight (Andre Dirrell aside). I’m also a bit of a Floyd fan and have generally backed him as being in the right against Manny Pacquaio, although that’s also partly to do with Manny constantly managing to rub me the wrong way (I think it’s to do with the way he knocked out Hatton, but I’m not sure, he just gets on my nerves!)

Favorite all-time fighter: Prince Naseem Hamed, Chris Eubank, Arturo Gatti

Best boxing memory: Danny Williams knocking out Mark Potter in the sixth, with his right shoulder dangerously dislocated. After that, it’s Carl Froch stopping Jermain Taylor with 14 seconds to go. That final round was one of the most exciting I’ve ever seen.

Favorite Fight: Hamed/Kelley, Hatton/Tzsyu, Gatti/Rodriguez, Gatti/Ward 1, Gatti/Ruelas, Eubank/Benn 1

Have you boxed before. if so provide any details on your success/lack there of: Had a total of 43 fights, kickboxing and boxing, at amateur/junior level. Considering I had zero ability, and relied on people punching themselves out (usually on my face), it’s amazing I’m still as pretty as I am. Overall I finished with a record (across both codes) of 43-41-2-0 (29), and from memory I think 17 or 18 of the stoppages I won were with my left hook. Haven’t put on a pair of gloves since injury (really bad groin tear) took me out of it when I was 17.

Boxing specific questions

Favorite current fighter: David Tua, Edwin Valero, Marcos Maidana

Favorite all-time fighter: Marvin Hagler, Roy Jones Jr, Lennox Lewis

Best boxing memory: Funnily enough, Mike Tyson’s declaration that “if he doesn’t die, it doesn’t count”. That really sticks in my mind as one of my earliest moments of awareness of boxing. Ricky Hatton’s great, career defining performancevto beat a still great Kostya Tszyu. Winning a very tidy sum of money by betting on the first big-punching South American Amir Khan ever fought. Oh, and Rocky beating the count in the second Creed fight.

Favorite Fight: Hagler/Hearns, Tua/Ibeabuchi, Lewis/Mercer, Eubank/Watson, The Thriller in Manilla.

I'd just like to say, I think these questions are really good, but;

I’d add:
1. Who is the best fighter you’ve ever seen? (Hagler is my favourite, but I think Jones is the best ever)
2. What is your earliest boxing memory?

Some people are acting like Pacquiao should be expected to have just gone, "Yeah sure, let’s do something I’ve never done before because your dad made some dumbass baseless comment."

3. What is your favourite knockout of all time?
4. If you could reverse any one fight result, what would it be? (Kudos to anyone that says “Floyd Mayweather’s first ever fight”, since then he wouldn’t have been so obsessed with protection of that ‘0’….)

1. Eubank
2. Seeing some old Ali fights with the dad
3. Allan Green on Jaidon Codrington is the most memorable in a morbid way, and the commentary post Randall Bailey KO of Frankie Figueroa explaining the ‘delivery system’
4. Simply because its the most recent one I saw, the last Ian Napa fight. Absolute joke, really, some of the scoring that goes on…

by BrianBrock on Feb 15, 2010 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

Mine would be;

1. Roy Jones Jr.

2. A Naseem Hamed fight, I don’t recall which. That or the Tyson quote about Ruddock. Although I do have a vague and garbled memory of hearing my uncle talking about Eubank/Watson, and saying that Watson was going to kill him (unfortunate turn of phrase, as it happens), and then the shock when the fight turned out the way it did. Not exactly sure which came first, but those are probably my 3 earliest.

3. Tszyu/Judah has to be up there. Eubank/Watson for pure drama, although I’d give my left bollock to change what happened to Watson as a result. Tua/Ruiz is right up there for me.

4. Probably the Thriller. I think the face of boxing would possibly be unrecognizable had Frazier won that fight, as he deserved to. Lennox/Rahman I. Tyson/Douglas, even though I’m not a massive Tyson fan, simply because I’d love to see exactly how good Tyson could have been against the elite opposition of his day had the Douglas fight never happened.

I forgot-

Tyson vs Michael Johnson was an amazing KO. The way Tyson sets up his feet before throwing everything into that shot is awe-inspriting for me. That was possibly the hardest punch ever thrown in the heavyweight division that I’ve ever seen.

Also, Pavlik Taylor I was a great KO.

2. Hmmm….probably getting those Sugar Ray Leonard boxing gloves as a kid.
3. I really like Jones Jr. knocking out Hill with that body shot.
4. ODH over Trinidad. Even if it was changed to a draw I’d be happy, but to give Trinidad the victory was bullshit.

Boxing specific questions

Favorite current fighter: Manny Pacquiao. Honorable Mentions: Glen Johnson, Izzy Vasquez, Timothy Bradley, Edwin Valero and Miguel Cotto

Favorite all-time fighter: Aaron Pryor, Henry Armstrong, Jack Johnson, Muhammad Ali, Bernard Hopkins, Manny Pacquiao

Best boxing memory:
1. Boxing Writers Association of America dinner in 2007. That was where I met Manny Pacquiao for the first time. I generally don’t care about celebrities, but I act like a hyper six-year old when I meet boxers. I also met Jake Lamota that night and ended up hanging out with a bunch of the boxing writers at Jimmy’s Corner after the dinner. Other than meeting fighters and writers, the best part of the dinner was being put at the table farthest from the stage. Normally that’s a bad thing, but my wife and I ended up at the same table as the ring card girls who were presenting the awards.

2. Boxing Writers Association of America dinner in 2008. Got to meet Pacquiao (again) and Izzy Vasquez, Joe Calzaghe and Genaro Hernandez. However, by far, my favorite memory of that night was watching Iran “The Blade” Barkley hit on my wife. Barkley went after my wife, as if she was Tommy Hearns. At one point, he slipped her his number. Yes, I have Iran Barkley’s home number.

Favorite Fight:
1. Pryor-Arguello I
2. Cotto-Judah
Generally, whenever Cotto fights at MSG then night before the Puerto Rican Day Parade the atmosphere is electric. Cotto-Judah in 2007 was the best I’ve ever witnessed live. The Garden was packed to the rafters that night with 20,000+ people in attendance. The crowd was mostly Puerto Rican and pro-Cotto, but a sizable portion of Brooklyn was also on hand to cheer on Judah. Not even the crappy under-card could quell the crowd’s enthusiasm. The main event did not disappoint- we wanted a fight and that’s exactly what we got that night.

Actually, I don’t drink, but whenever the boxing writers are in town for their annual dinner or to cover a fight, I make my way to Jimmy’s Corner to hang out with them. Right then and there, I discovered that I didn’t have the stomach for the game. I froze. He promptly popped me on the mouth.

Nothing, I love foie gras

But there are some who would say it’s as morally repugnant as snorting coke.

Have you boxed before?: Played rugby in my school years then joined my local amateur boxing club around age 20 where i trained and sparred on and off for 4 years or so,mainly for fitness. Was asked to fight a few times but never did as i didn’t really have a killer instinct and was pretty average too!
Had a good punch in either hand though,so i was told.I’m glad i kept what few brain cells i have, looking back :).
Favourite Current Fighter: Manny Pacquiao.

My dad gave me a tape called Ali’s Greatest Fights when i was about 10 so that’s where the Ali v Williams memory comes from.Poetry in motion,Ali was in that fight

That was Williams post the shooting incident though. Not that I think he’d have had a chance against Ali even if he was completely healthy. I just think that because of the damage he sustained there was no way he was ever going to lay a glove on Muhammad that night. Ali vintage 1967 is the greatest heavyweight I’ve ever seen.
