Friday Night Fights Open Thread
Since I feel like I'm getting a cold or something (knock on wood) and am finding it hard to pay much close attention to anything, I'm not going to be doing proper round-by-round for tonight's Friday Night Fights card if I watch at all, but that doesn't mean we won't have a place for those watching to talk about the fights in real time.
It's a decent show tonight from Temecula, California, with Ji-Hoon Kim (19-5, 16 KO) taking on Tyrone Harris (24-5, 16 KO) at 130 pounds (or maybe it's 135), plus one of my favorite prospects, the unbeaten Ruslan Provodnikov (14-0, 9 KO) against veteran Javier Jauregui (53-16-2, 36 KO) at 140 pounds. Both fights could provide plenty of action.

Wasn't Kim on FNF a long time ago once?
Now that I see a picture of him, I feel like he was. He was brought in to be the patsy on some fight (when his record looked a lot worse than it does now) and pretty much kicked the guy’s ass, knocked him out in a round or two. Was huge for someone his weight too, if I remember correctly.

NBC decided that I'm 2.5 hours from Vancouver and still gotta watch the Olympics on tape delay
So I’ll be around to watch some boxing.

I hate that they do that.

10-9 Provo
I like aggressive fighters. I like fighters who punch in combination. I like body punchers. I think I’m gonna like Provodnikov.

Provodnikov vs. Jauregui (R1 of 10, Jack Reiss the referee)
Good body shot early by Provodnikov. He’s tearing up Jauregui’s body early as he backs him up against the ropes. Now a body shot at the center of the ring by Jauregui catches Provodnikov. Effective jab from Provodnikov. Wild swinging left from Jauregui misses. Halfway through the round. Another body shot by Provodnikov but Reiss says it was low and warns him. Now more body shots by Provodnikov and as Jauregui urges the Russian to fight he gets clocked with a right over the top of the head. WHAT A RIGHT HAND BY PROVODNIKOV SNAPPING JAUREGUI’S HEAD BACK! That dude has one hard head because that would’ve hurt most people. Entertaining round.
10-9 Provodnikov

These inside exchanges are smoking!

Provo vs. Jauregui (R2)
Not going to type up the dude’s whole name from here on our. Jauregui’s left hand is blocked at the top. They work inside and Jauregui lands a body shot and an uppercut. Okay Provo caught him with a body shot and now another massive right hand and that may have stunned Jaurgui. Back to working inside. Provo setting up the big shot with the jab to no effect. But he does catch Jaurgui with a left hand over the top. Uppercut by Jauregui jars Provo’s head back. One of his best shots of the night.
Good left hook to the body by Provo. Now an uppercut. Jaurgui fires back with two punches and now going with a combination . Holy crap I can’t keep up this is some entertaining boxing. Another right hand sneaks in for Provo to the head.
20-18 Provo

My favorite part of the round
was when they both scored uppercuts from different angles at nearly the same moment.

Provo vs. Jauregui (R3)
Again they trade inside .Jauregui landing good blows to the body. Glancing right hook from Provo and now a left to the body. He’s dictating the pace and action thus far. Great right uppercut by Jauregui caught Provo napping defensively. Damn. Jauregui is getting hit with everything. His face is reddened. How can he keep this up? It’s only round 3. Provo with a couple of uppercuts inside and a short left hand. Jauregui fires back with a left jab. Now both men swing a little wildly. 30 seconds left in the round. Two jabs and a right hand send Jauregui against the ropes. Provo warned for holding the head. What a fight!
30-27 Provo

Sad I'm missing it
Provo’s been on FNF 3 or 4 times before, and he’s always exciting. Doesn’t seem to have any buzz for whatever reason though.

Provo vs. Jauregui R4
Teddy pointed out Provo should be going to the body more. I actually agree. Jauregui gets the crowd excited with the loud thud after his right hand made contact with Provo’s….glove. Yet again the former champ is against the ropes and getting worked inside with the left hook to the body and short uppercut. Provo now firing away. Jauregui is covering up and again he gets popped with a right hand. It’s only a matter of time before the punishment is too much.
They fight in the middle of the ring and Jauregui gets a decent uppercut to score. But again he’s against the ropes and getting hit with clean punches.
40-36 Provo

Jauregui ‘s right is REALLY wild, yet it is still finding Provo pretty often. Not a good sign for Prov’s D.

Provo vs. Jauregui R5
Left to the body by Provo. Jauregui throwing some shots and trying to back Provo up. Vicious combination inside as Jauregui is against the ropes and eating punches to the body. He’s definitely pissing blood tonight. A minor moment of inactivity as the crowd chants “MEXICO!”.
More uppercuts killing Jauregui. It’s clear this guy is completely outclassed but he is game.
50-45 Provo
The Seattle Times linked to my website in June 2009. I wasn't aware of this until January 2010.
Provo vs. Jauregui R6
Good short right lands inside for Jauregui. But for the umpteenth time he’s cornered against the ropes and absorbing shots. Provo has landed nearly half of his power shots out of 286. More uppercuts, body work, etc. Rinse and repeat from Provo.
Dad just said Provo reminds him of Tszyu. Agree or disagree?
60-54 Provo

Tessitore asking Teddy how his Russian is coming along. Wow.
Jarring right hand by Provo. Not much to say about this round. Boring 3 minutes of an otherwise great fight.
70-63 Provo

Dunno how good Provo is gonna be, ‘cause it depends on whether he tightens up his defense and learns to keep up with the body work, but he’s not gonna be hurting for fights because damn if he’s not entertaining to watch.

Provo vs. Jauregui R8
Jauregui is just getting his ass kicked now. That’s all I have to offer. What happened in this round is a slightly decreased version of stuff that happened 7 rounds ago.
Jauregui may be hurt. He’s taking a ton of shots in the corner. More shots coming in and Reiss stops the fight!! Whoa I disagree with that.
Provo TKO-8

I mean Prov was surely going to win. That was clear. But that stoppage was too soon. No two ways about it.

Probably thought he was just going to suffer two extra rounds of punishment. End it now.

Yeah I understand the logic, and it was a humane decision, but Jauregui deserved more time.
It was abrupt.

He was getting hammered, wasn’t really fighting back, had a fairly nasty cut over his eye… maybe the ref could’ve let it go a bit longer, but why?

He hadn’t landed a meaningful punch since the 6th, and it looked like he was just getting weaker. I can see your point, but I’ve gotta respectfully disagree.
by Verklemptomaniac on Feb 12, 2010 10:59 PM EST up reply actions
If the ref keeps Jaregui from needing to wear daipers when he's 50
in a fight where he had zero chance of winning, then I’m probably okay with the stoppage.
Aesthetically, I hate early stoppages, but more and more I understand why they’re often necessary.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog

I don't think it was that degree of punishment, and I don't really have a major problem with it.
But I do think it was a little too soon.

Unfortunately, it's not the 'level of punishment'
It seems that a lot of the long term injuries come from lots of minor impacts bunched together as much as from having a series of concussions.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
That's true,
and often that kind of punishment isn’t even apparent during a fight. But you can only referee a fight based on what you can see, and I thought he was covered up for the majority of those.

Agreed.
Harris was in deep trouble. But aside from one really nasty body shot, I think most of those punches at the end were blocked. I prefer a little early to a little late, but that was more than a little early.
