Bad Left Hook Live Boxing Results and Commentary: Nathan Cleverly v. Antonio Brancalion

Starting at 3pm ET we'll be bringing live, round-by-round coverage, scoring and analysis from the "Night of the Champions" card at Wembley Arena in London, televised by Sky Sports.

The main event features Nathan Cleverly and Antonio Brancalion in what frankly should be a mismatch to decide the vacant European light heavyweight title, but there's plenty more on the card, too. Contending lightweight Kevin Mitchell (30-0, 22 KO) takes on Ignacio Mendoza (27-5-2, 18 KO) in the main co-feature, and top UK prospects James DeGale and Frankie Gavin will be in action, too. There are a lot of Frank Warren's best prospects on the bill (including the Walsh brothers), but who gets on TV will depend. If you hadn't yet heard, Danny Williams pulled out of his fight with Derek Chisora, which was scheduled for this show. Chisora faces Carl Baker now, fittingly enough. Baker is the nobody who upset Williams in the Prizefighter tournament last year.

And a bunch of UK BLHers, including myself, will be there!

Can’t wait, it’s a shame it’s not the superb bill that was first announced, but it’s still a pretty decent card – I expect everyone who should win to win:
Clev
Mitchell
Chisora
Jamie Cox
Frankie Gavin
and James DeGale.

The real bet there is Clev by KO vs Clev by Decision

Both are right around 1:1 odds. Clev has a crummy KO ratio, but he’s won by KO in 5 of his last 6 and his power has really come on. Brancalion has only been KOed in 1 of 7 losses, but the KO came in the first round of his last fight, and he was knocked down three times by someone who’s not a ginormous puncher.

The only reason I pointed out McDonagh’s record was to note that he’s not any good, lest anyone considered this some amazing performance when Gavin outclasses him. Which of course Sky will.

I agree but i really don’t think there was anyway that Barrera would have won to be honest, mainly because he was/is shot and too small.

by Matt Mosley on Feb 13, 2010 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

No way he won that fight, but the favoritism showed on that cut was absurd and blatant. That cut was not going to get better and there was no stopping the blood flow. All they did was keep him in there until they could get Khan the win on a TD.

Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."

by Scott Christ on Feb 13, 2010 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

Absolutely

Barrera couldn’t have won either way.

I feel like a lot of people (especially Americans) underestimate just how good Khan is, but I also feel like a lot of people (especially Brits) underestimate just how bad his chin is. I think Khan outboxes anyone at 140 right now, and possibly with relative ease, other than maybe Bradley. If he had a world class chin, we’d be talking about how he’s a future ATG. Just I feel like a lot of the better fighters can catch him.

Gavin-McDonagh R1

McDonagh comes out aggressively, and Gavin’s avoiding all of it. McDonagh is being really reckless in there, just sort of flying in with a looping jab or left hook, or something in between, then covering up whenever he thinks Gavin might open up offensively. Gavin’s trying to rip single shots more than throw in combination in this first round.

Gavin 10-9

Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."

by Scott Christ on Feb 13, 2010 3:12 PM EST reply actions

Gavin-McDonagh R2

McDonagh is all over the place. He’s really done nothing, just flailed about around the ring. It’s half-brave in style — yeah, he’s letting his hands go some, but whenever Gavin decides to throw, McDonagh tries to cover up. It’s not like he wants to trade. But he surely can’t outbox Gavin and he has no power, so what can he do I guess? Maybe he just wants to survive.

I do like Gavin targeting the body with his right hook. Nice left hand from Gavin, but McDonagh’s head is just out of the way and it doesn’t land too clean. There are the body shots from Gavin, and McDonagh is feeling them.

Gavin 10-9
Gavin 20-18

I really like Gavin’s intensity. I mean, it’s easy to look intense against non-competition, but he’s got some real oomph in the way he fights.

Bad Left Hook

by Scott Christ on Feb 13, 2010 3:17 PM EST reply actions

Gavin-McDonagh R3

Now Gavin is trying to back up and punch when McDonagh misses, and that’s looking easy for him to do. Ripping to the body with another right hook. BIG left hand from Gavin. Another left sneaks in. Watt says Gavin hasn’t been allowed to “dominate,” and I’ll just assume he’s using the word “dominate” differently than I would, because Gavin has completely dominated this fight. He’s outlanding McDonagh like 4-to-1.

Gavin 10-9
Gavin 30-27

Gavin-McDonagh R4

Gavin’s left hand is starting to really tear into McDonagh, whose aggressiveness has slowed and allowed Gavin to just smoke him. All that said, McDonagh’s giving Gavin some work and some rounds, and that is important. McDonagh can’t hit the broad side of a barn at this point. Gavin is floating around the ring, landing good shots, and making McDonagh look awful.

Gavin 10-9

Not much of a challenge for Gavin really

I expected a bit more fight from McDonagh

by Dafs on Feb 13, 2010 3:26 PM EST reply actions

They better keep Gavin away from swarming pressure fighters and speedsters

I really hate the way he just sticks his chin out there constantly. He’s slick, but he’s not SO slick that he can’t be caught. I mean, he just doesn’t tuck in his chin AT ALL. Hopefully they can train him to do a better job with that in the future.

Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog

by Brickhaus on Feb 13, 2010 3:28 PM EST reply actions

Gavin-McDonagh R5

McDonagh coming forward again in this round, still getting picked apart for the most part and made to miss constantly, but at least McDonagh is going back to making him work. Now McDonagh is caught on the ropes, and Gavin unloads, but McDonagh keeps the guard high and tight, and Frankie’s forced to back off. Gavin now with some vicious shots, but they’re not shaking McDonagh. Only time I’ve seen him really stutter-step was a body shot a couple rounds ago. His chin is certainly there. Gavin getting flashy with uppercuts and a straight left. When that left lands, it’s got laser-like quality.

Gavin 10-9
Gavin 50-45

The two talk trash after the bell.

I know he's not popular

But I really do like DeGale as a prospect a lot more. He just has such a high level of ring intelligence. There are so many little things he does that he does really well. He punches out of lots of awkward positions. He’s always protecting his chin. He moves his feet in a what so that he’s always in position to throw on balance. I do question his aggression sometimes and whether he really wants to mix things up, but if he doesn’t get caught into the trap of becoming too defensive, I can see him giving a lot of people a lot of trouble.

They're talking Adamu for the title in his next fight

I think he beats three shades of shit out of Adamu, but I also think he’s not ready for a 12 round fight by any stretch. He needs to fight someone who will give him 8 or 10 rounds, and then he needs to prove that he’ll actually try to throw punches and not just fight defensively. He really is a great defensive fighter though.

it's junk

I order a LOT of PPVs. I order most PPVs. But I’m skipping that one. Donaire-Vargas is a joke (and Donaire-Guerrero was a joke, too), Montiel-Morales isn’t a lot better on paper, Santiago-Concepcion could go either way but is at least evenly matched, and I don’t really care about anything Eric Morel does, and I hope Gerry Penalosa kicks his ass.

Warren and Mitchell talk about Katsidis-Mitchell

And maybe Khan-Mitchell after that. I’d be into both fights, especially if Mitchell and Khan kept winning into late this year or early next year. Could be a hell of an event in the UK.

Still, I hope the UK fighters are prepared for Amir Khan to not really be on their radar if he succeeds in the US. Golden Boy will keep him building an American fanbase if they can help it.

Cleverly-Brancalion R1

Cleverly using his speed and range early, and getting his right hand in there. Also working well to the body already. Brancalion with two left hooks and a right. Brancalion is getting Cleverly coming in a little bit, punching back with some decent speed, though not landing terribly accurately. Decent tactical round.

Cleverly-Brancalion R2

Jab from Brancalion, Cleverly with a left hook in return. Cleverly opens up with his speed and lands a couple more left hooks, with Brancalion looking caught off-guard. Big lefts, and Brancalion staggers a bit, but that might’ve been more balance than anything. The speed is starting to prove to be clearly in Cleverly’s favor, and he’s got more pop too. He’s just landing more accurately. Watt is overly concerned with Brancalion’s powerless counters and actually not giving Cleverly enough credit for essentially dominating this round. Brancalion is being pushed back at will.

Cleverly takes his foot off the gas in the final minute of the round, but then lands a solid left hook again. Brancalion is wide open for that shot. Watt is obsessed with Brancalion’s “liveliness.” He’s getting peppered in there.

Cleverly-Brancalion R3

Cleverly swinging at the body to start the round. Really awkward round without much action in the first half. Cleverly might be leaving something in reserves this round, and Brancalion is showing no real interest in leading action. He’s all counters. Brancalion with a couple shots, and then Cleverly with a good one. Right from Cleverly is just short, then Brancalion misses everything he throws back. Good right hand from Cleverly again. I think Jim Watt has a crush on Brancalion. This fight is really not close.

by jcarr71 on Feb 13, 2010 5:17 PM EST reply actions

Cleverly-Brancalion

Brancalion gets shaken early in the round, and now Cleverly is tearing him to bits with the right hands. Brancalion’s defense is awful. Another right lands. Brancalion keeps shaking his head, but he might instead choose to guard it before he gets blasted.

With 30 seconds to go in the round, they question Brancalion’s power. His 8 KOs in 32 wins might tip you off early, but hey. Brancalion gets rocked again. This is getting increasingly one-sided. Another nasty right, and then Brancalion goes down just before the bell!

The referee almost sends them back to fight before realizing the bell had sounded.

Murat or Uzelkov

But I don’t know if those fights are ripe yet. Unlikely we’ll see any inter-contender fights when the top of the division is so weak.

Uzelkov hasn't done much

except for beating Campillo (I think, 75% sure KO 6)

I think he’s learning to hold back a bit and box now though.
He can devote to boxing full time when he graduates in May too.

Haven’t seen Shumanov fight but i know Cleverly looks the business to me,even considering tonight’s opponents’ flaws.
He could be fighting Cloud/Johnson,or even Dawson in a year to 18 months.

Too dangerous with no upside

Now that he doesn’t have a belt, Campillo is going to become one of the most avoided fighters on the planet, mark my words.
