Bad Left Hook Live Boxing Results and Commentary: Scott Lawton v. Leva Kirakosyan

We'll be live at 5pm ET today for the weekly Sky Sports Friday Fight Night broadcast.

This week in the main event, Scott Lawton moves down in weight to face Leva Kirakosyan for the vacant European junior lightweight title.

Lawton (27-5-1, 6 KO) has in the past faced and lost to Amir Khan, John Murray, and Jon Thaxton. He's never really gotten a breakthrough victory, and at 33, it's sort of now or never. It's the first time he'll be fighting at 130 pounds, too, spending his entire career up until this point at 135 and 140.

Kirakosyan (31-5, 21 KO) is an Armenian based in France. The 36-year-old hasn't had a notable win since knocking out Carl Johaneson in four rounds back in 2007, after which he lost the European title to Sergey Gulyakevich by unanimous decision.

Gulyakevich is actually fighting on the undercard in a six-rounder, and Matthew Hatton is taking a stay-busy fight with rumors floating that he could be facing Saul Alvarez on the Mosley-Mayweather undercard on May 1.

It's kind of do or die for both tonight as far as title shots go, so expect a couple of guys fighting to win.

also on the card

Chris Edwards v. Adimerek Shindjuu
Danny McIntosh v. Tony Oakey

Edwards and Oakey are both generally exciting. Should be a decent show overall.

They just said “Kirakosyan is much more experienced than Lawton.” Lawton started pro in 2001, Kirakosyan in 1999. Lawton has 33 fights, Kirakosyan 36. That’s not much.

Lawton-Kirakosyan R1

Lawton has a big height advantage in there. Kirakosyan pushes him to the ropes but doesn’t get anything done. BIG RIGHT KIRAKOSYAN AND DOWN GOES LAWTON! Just a clean right hand. He’ll fight on.

Left hook and now Kirakosyan is going for the kill. Lawton wants to hang on. That knockdown came just 40 seconds into the round.

Kirakosyan coming right at him and firing heavy shots, but Lawton is keeping his guard up. Lawton plays defense and tries to get his jab working as we enter the final minute. Kirakosyan is stalking Lawton, but Lawton will survive the round. Body shot lands for Kirakosyan, and a left hook wobbles Lawton near the bell.

Kirakosyan 10-8

The ring looks huge.

Lawton-Kirakosyan R2

Lawton comes out with a terrible-looking lead right. Kirakosyan just goes back to stalking Lawton, who looks terrified of letting his hands go. Kirakosyan is clearly looking to knock Lawton out and nothing more. Neither of them are doing much of anything, and Kirakosyan is walking Lawton around the ring at will. Lawton gets near the ropes, stops, and covers up while Kirakosyan throws punches that really have no shot at landing.

Lawton hit with another left hook, and now he grabs on and holds. Another left hook gets in, and again Lawton covers up. Nice left by Kirakosyan! Lawton may be hurt now, stuck in the corner and takes another left hook! AND ANOTHER! He’s getting a standing eight count now. Didn’t go down, but the ropes wobbled him up.

Lawton’s done. The referee is letting him continue, and the bell rings. This is pathetic.

Kirakosyan 10-8
Kirakosyan 20-16

Why doesn’t Lawton use the ring?
I thought he would be out of his depth in this one.

by Matt Mosley on Feb 19, 2010 5:20 PM EST reply actions

he's trying, kind of

He’s just afraid of letting his hands go.

Lawton-Kirakosyan R3

Lawton’s legs are jelly. And he’s getting battered to start the round. Lawton is doing nothing but standing on the ropes HUGE RIGHT HAND LANDS AND SHAKES LAWTON TO HIS CORE!

IT IS OVER!

Leva Kirakosyan KO-3

unreal mismatch

Lawton looked like he had absolutely no business in there with Kirakosyan.

What Lawton did to deserve a shot in the first place i don’t see.

by Matt Mosley on Feb 19, 2010 5:22 PM EST reply actions

nothing at all

This should not have happened. All they did was nearly get Lawton hurt against a far superior fighter.

At least it allows for more time to show the undercard.
Oakey v McIntosh should be good eh?
Watson v Jones too if they show it.

by Matt Mosley on Feb 19, 2010 5:24 PM EST reply actions

Yeah there should be some fun stuff here. And the Leva domination certainly wasn’t boring.

Prizefighter draw

George Hillyard (9-4-1, 5 KO) v. Prince Arron (14-3-1, 1 KO)
Neil Sinclair (33-7, 26 KO) v. Bradley Pryce (28-7, 17 KO)
Brett Flournoy (9-0, 4 KO) v. Danny Butler (18-3, 3 KO)
Steve O’Meara (10-0, 2 KO) v. Martin Concepcion (16-6, 10 KO)

Sinclair-Pryce was probably a favorite for the final.

Butler can’t punch his way out of a wet paper bag the few times I’ve seen him. The Sinclair-Pryce winner is going to win the tournament. I think Concepcion is a real darkhorse though.

Concepcion has the longest odds, IIRC

I figured, and he’s really not good and will probably lose in the first round, but the format can be beneficial to a guy who can punch, and he has some power.

this is an alright fight

But it’s pretty much a pillow fight and the fact that this is for the Commonwealth title says plenty about the Commonwealth flyweight title.

I remember first seeing him KO Carl Johanneson and then again in the rematch and i was suprised when they announced this fight, even though Kirakosyan is getting a bit old to be fighting.
No disrespect to Lawton but i have never seen him do anything to make me think he was a worthy EBU title contender.

by Matt Mosley on Feb 19, 2010 6:15 PM EST up reply actions

eh, not really

He’s borderline top 25 in the world with this win, which was really not much of a win, and although he moida’d poor Lawton, it was 99% due to the fact that poor Lawton had no business in there.

So what does this say about Derry Matthews?

I remember when that kid was getting a ton of hype. Guess that amounted to a lot of nothing.

Oh jeez. Oakey mistimed the count. I mean he wasn’t going to last any longer but still.
