Calvin Watkins of ESPN Dallas reports that the March 13 fight at Cowboys Stadium between Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey is nearing a sellout of the 45,000-seat setup that has been arranged, and if ticket demands increase, more seats could be added.

Whether they fully sell out or not, Pacquiao-Clottey will have the biggest live attendance for a boxing event on U.S. soil in years.

As for betting odds, they're massively in Pacquiao's favor right now. A quick look at some of the figures out there, just for entertainment and discussion:

  • Sportsbook.com: Pacquiao -550, Clottey +350
  • Bodog: Pacquiao -600, Clottey +400
  • Bookmaker.com: Pacquiao -480, Clottey +395
  • BetUS: Pacquiao -600, Clottey +400
  • 5Dimes: Pacquiao -525, Clottey +415
  • The Greek: Pacquiao -500, Clottey +400

If Clottey wins..

..Would this be the biggest upset since Tyson-Douglas? Considering the guys Pacquaio’s beaten over the past 5 years or so, it would be a pretty monumental upset.

I guess it depends what you mean by 'biggest'...

Pacquiao – De La Hoya was an upset in a much bigger fight (I find it amazing how quickly people forget that Pac was a 2.5-1 underdog in that one); odds have been wider than these for a number of other big to sort of big fights.

But Pac won’t be weight drained or old.

And no Clottey is too good a fighter for it to be considered a huge upset.

by gunranger on Feb 25, 2010 8:07 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe I'm nuts

But should Clottey be THAT big of an underdog? Don’t get me wrong, he needs the fight of his life, he needs TO NOT LET UP LATE and fight all 12 rounds(not doing so cost him the Cotto fight), but he’s a talented fighter. I’m far from a betting guy, but these odds suggest to me that Clottey is perceived to have absolutely no chance to win. I don’t agree.

Yeah, I completely agree.

Personally, I believe Clottey has essentially no chance to win.

Interesting

It seemed that when the fight was made, the response was, well, this is a perfectly acceptable fight, certainly no PBF-PacMan, but reasonable nonetheless. If people think Clottey essentially cannot win, is it really acceptable? Or are we basically at the point where we believe PacMan is so good that acceptable no longer equals “the other guy can conceivably win this fight”?

by The Boxer Rebellion on Feb 25, 2010 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

Who else was he going to fight? Mosley was still tied up, as was Berto. I do not blame him for not wanting to fight Yuri Foreman any more than I wouldn’t blame him for not fighting Kelly Pavlik. I just think Clottey is in a horrible spot stylistically in this fight. It’s still a very acceptable fight. Clottey’s a top five welterweight and a very good fighter. I just think the fight stinks for him, and I also think he tops out at “very good,” and those are his best days.

A very fair point

A loss here, and just about everyone says Clottey was a nice fighter, but “very good” was was ceiling. A win would clearly change the way he’s viewed drastically.

If he beats Pacquiao, “Upset of the Year” voting can be tallied on March 14.

I agree with you. Clottey naturally outweighs Pacquiao by 30+ lbs. & Neither Cotto nor Margarito were able to KO him.

Also...

this fight has really snuck up on me. Hard to believe it is right around the corner. Still on the fence about plunking down the cash for it.

I'm considering saving my money on this one

And buying the Sonsona card this weekend instead, which doesn’t have the name power but is a more solid card top to bottom. HBO will replay the fight anyway.

I’ll probably just waste my money on both

Clottey's

chin is probably the best that Pac has ever faced.

but he needs a KO, that’s the only way he can win IMO. And I don’t think he throws enough punches or enough combos to get Pac out of there. I think the odds are appropriate.

Yeah,

i don’t think he’s fast enough to tag Manny either. He’ll get bamboozled and will be less effective than Cotto was, imo.

Just curious

Cotto-Clottey on March 13 instead of this one: who do like and why?

by The Boxer Rebellion on Feb 25, 2010 4:10 PM EST up reply actions

Well i think Cotto deserved the decision in the first fight but after taking a beating in his last fight,it would be hard for me to pick him if they were fighting again so soon after the Pac v Cotto fight.
I’d prob go for Clottey in another close one.

by Matt Mosley on Feb 25, 2010 4:12 PM EST up reply actions

On the other hand, the cut made the first fight closer than it would have been. On the other other hand, I suppose he could get cut again.

by taco pal on Feb 25, 2010 4:18 PM EST up reply actions

Clottey on points

The temptation is to just say, because that’s what happened last time, but I will resist! I think he can make himself very bad stylistically for Cotto is he works about 30% harder in the ring. That’s all it would take.

He's absolutely got to be more active

than he’s ever been, or at least in the fights in which I’ve seen him. Could well be a case of old dog/no new tricks, but if he thinks he’s going to hold his gloves in front of his face for 80% of all 12 rounds and win, he’s insane. If he’s there to win, and not simply collect a check, he try to be more active.

by The Boxer Rebellion on Feb 25, 2010 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

Nope.

De la Hoya’s was, strictly chin-wise.

by Fj-3 on Feb 25, 2010 10:57 PM EST up reply actions

This being Clottey’s big fight he must know he has to go for it. Im expecting at some stage he will throw caution to the wind and try throwing shots, will it do anything? I dout it with the speed of Pac, but a wrong move could still change things. Earlier the better because after Pac has figured out timing he will be able to step away more effectivly

Imo,the more Clottey tries to throw, the more Pacquaio will counter him.

by Matt Mosley on Feb 25, 2010 6:27 PM EST up reply actions

I think that to but he cant win by keeping his high gard up for 12 rounds. He is bigger and stronger and can take a good shot. Might be a case of take 2 or 3 to land one and hope it does damage. With saying that I think like you that it wont amount to anything other than Pac countering and making Clottey look slow.

Clottey’s upper body looks ripped to bits in that picture.
Is Manny gonna demand blood tests or what:)?

by Matt Mosley on Feb 25, 2010 7:15 PM EST reply actions

Clottey’s upper body is really thick. I don’t think there’s a welterweight out there with that sort of upper body development. It’s really the reason he struggles with the weight sometimes, because he’s not particularly tall or lengthy. Just massive in the shoulders and arms.

People betting on Clottey deserve better than 4 to 1, imho.
