Bad Left Hook Live Boxing Results and Commentary: Victor Ortiz v. Hector Alatorre

Golden Boy's Fight Night Club series returns live tonight from Club Nokia in Los Angeles with rebounding Victor Ortiz headlining against Hector Alatorre, a guy he should by all rights completely run over like a Mack truck barreling down on a frozen doe. If Ortiz wins, he moves on to face Nate Campbell on May 15.

Though Fox Sports Net is the TV home of the series, the show tonight will be aired on tape delay on FSN. However, RingTV.com will air the show live, starting at 11pm ET.

Fight Night Club is now going to air once a month, with the next show scheduled for March 25. That night, bantamweight contender Abner Mares will main event in a final tune-up before facing Yonnhy Perez for a title on May 22. It also now appears that Sergio Mora will headline on May 27. Doug Fischer reported all of this earlier.

Also in action tonight:

  • Lightweights: Luis Ramos (13-0, 7 KO) v. Walter Estrada (35-11, 24 KO). Estrada has in recent fights been railroaded by Yuriorkis Gamboa, Michael Farenas and Marvin Quintero. Those three fights -- Estrada's last three -- were all KO-1s. Estrada lasted a grand total of three minutes and 59 seconds in the three fights combined.
  • Featherweights: Charles Huerta (12-1, 7 KO) v. Guadalupe de Leon (8-9, 4 KO). Huerta's a decent prospect, but don't sleep on de Leon entirely. He upset Derrick Wilson on December 2 after losing seven straight fights.

We'll be live tonight with coverage and discussion for Tune-Up Club Fight Night Club, so join us!

Doug Fischer says that Ortiz needs rounds before he gets in there to fight Victor Ortiz. Then says, “Hector Alatorre is gonna give him quality rounds tonight.” Alatorre has never been stopped. I think that ends tonight, and fast. Ortiz is a lot better than Don Juan Futrell and Jeff Resto.

Huerta-de Leon R1

Huerta jabbing to start, and successfully so. Guadalupe can’t get inside and can’t beat Huerta’s jab, but he’s starting to turn up the heat a bit and swing more. I think he knows he can’t win a technical affair here. He’s going to have to check Huerta’s chin. de Leon has touched him a few times, but Huerta gets the round.

Huerta 10-9

Huerta-de Leon R2

Guadalupe pops him with a couple of rights early in the round, but then Huerta hurts him with a couple of good shots, knocking him back. Huerta doesn’t pounce at all. When Huerta lets his hands go he’s doing pretty much what he wants. de Leon flurries, but all of it meets defense from Huerta. de Leon gets about four decent shots in the next time Huerta opens up. Closer round than the first.

Mario Solis’ voice reminds me of old WWF commentator Sean Mooney, who last I knew was working for Fox Sports Arizona.

Both letting it fly at center ring, and BOTH ARE LANDING! Huerta wins that war, but doesn’t budge de Leon. And de Leon couldn’t back him down either. Pretty good fight so far, really.

Huerta-de Leon R4

Guadalupe is still bringing the fight. I don’t think he’s got the power to hurt Huerta, but bless him he’s trying. Huerta stings him with a right, but this round so far is Guadalupe staying hyper-busy and cutting off Huerta. Great shots from Huerta. de Leon might be wearing himself out a little bit. Huerta landing, de Leon not. And Guadalupe is getting hit a lot to close this round. That was fun.

Huerta-de Leon R5

Most of Guadalupe’s stuff just isn’t getting through. Huerta is picking his spots to throw back and most of the fight, he’s been very right about those choices. Guadalupe is definitely looking like a good gatekeeper for this exact level, though. Tough, makes guys fights, can take a punch. Huerta starting to land from range again near the bell.

Ramos-Estrada R1

Couple of southpaws. Jerky first 1:30 for both. Make that 2:00, but Ramos is starting to take control a bit. Good right hook for Ramos, but Estrada gets a left hand back in return. Fairly interesting first round. This feels like a powder keg fight.

Good straight left hand from Ramos shakes Estrada a little bit. Body shot by Estrada, and Estrada is starting to wing shots from deep down! Left again from Ramos. And another. Two of them miss now. Estrada circles away, then tries to pounce but comes up short. Ramos takes another round, most competitive of the fight.

Alatorre is awful. I don’t mean he’s, like, the worst boxer. You can see at least two worse fighters on Sky every Friday. But he is just not enjoyable to watch. THUDDING left from Ortiz shakes Alatorre, then he gets scraped by another shot and hurt on that one for sure.

Another hard left from Ortiz in the last 10 seconds, then Alatorre is all, “Yeah! Come on!”

This is one of those fights that could end whenever Ortiz really wants it to.

Now they’re telling me that Ortiz is an MMA fighter with ground skills. And he runs fast! And he’s a surfer! OK, Dougie’s popping a boner at this point.

Easy Ortiz round. Easy Ortiz fight.

Ortiz seems… lost. He’s winning easy as a mismatch, but he seems afraid to be a brawler still and doesn’t complete understand how to fight any other way. He’s sort of lost in the middle and just looks oddly uncomfortable.

Ortiz-Alatorre R4

Now they’re telling me Ortiz “likes all kinds of music.” That’s what people say when they own Sublime’s self-titled album, The Eagles greatest hits, Beatles 1, The Chronic and The Emancipation of Mimi.

The commentators should give Ortiz a massage between rounds the way this is going. They’ve totally abandoned calling the fight.

Ortiz slugs him with some left hands. I think jcarr71 is on to something just above. Ortiz seems uncomfortable NOT being a brawler, but is trying not to be. So he’s sort of stuck stylistically in there. He seems like there’s no real gameplan. This is sparring without the hats.

And I’ll tell you, if Nate Campbell has much left, Ortiz could be in trouble in May.

The Beatles are not one of my absolute favorite bands, but I generally agree about Beatles covers. It’s like, what are you going to do? Make it better? When Johnny Cash — who I love like Dougie loves Victor — did “In My Life,” I was like, “Ugh, why did you let Rubin talk you into this?” It kind of sounded like Cash felt the same way. Like how his “Personal Jesus” sounds like he hates the song.

Ortiz/Campbell

If Ortiz fights like this against even a faded, bloated Nate, he’s going to get hit until he quits again. He has no idea how to have an offense going backwards and Campbell’s pressure will wear him down relatively quickly. If he pushes forward, he’s way too strong for Nate and will destroy him, but I don’t know if he’s willing to push forward anymore.

Ortiz-Alatorre R7

Ortiz gets shoulder blocked down to start the round. That’s pretty much the highlight. Dougie calls for body work and Victor responds. Is he wearing an earpiece?

Uppercut from Alatorre rocks Ortiz’s head back, but doesn’t really seem to affect him. They break and then Ortiz slaps him with a left hand. I think Ortiz would like to close the show, but instead he goes backwards until the bell rings.

Ortize-Alatorre R8

Alatorre has gone southpaw and lands a straight left. Ortiz ripping on him now. Alatorre likes to get hit and say, HEY COME ON NOW LET’S MAKE A FIGHT! But then he doesn’t really do anything.

Now Dougie is talking up Ortiz’s win over Carlos Maussa. If you saw that fight, you might recall that Maussa looked like he had about as much interest in fighting Victor Ortiz as he did in burning his foot in a Foreman Grill. Maussa never fought again. And that was over two years ago.

I mean, he really might be right, and I get what he’s saying, but it sounds so hilarious.

Doug: “Alatorre is not an easy guy to hit cleanly! If Ortiz was not so quick and accurate as he is … He’s got some decent footwork, as a matter of fact!”

Doug: “Alatorre’s been pesky.”

So is Alatorre good (a: no) or is Ortiz letting him hang in because he wants rounds?

That was a British boxing prospect hurts an opponent and the ref immediately calls the fight off for no reason other than to put a KO on the prospect’s record style stoppage right there.

I’m assuming it is Dougie’s early candidate for KO of the year.
