They’re really excited about 67 knockouts among eight fighters. 53 of those are between Sinclair, Pryce and Concepcion.

are picking Sinclair to beat O’Meara in the final.
I’m going with BLH’s pick of Pryce to win it,although he can be a bit erratic/inconsistent.

They reckon Pryce starts slowly. Not good in this kind of format.

by Matt (Yorkshire) on Feb 26, 2010 3:17 PM EST up reply actions

It’s a very valid concern for sure. I figure the Pryce-Sinclair winner wins the whole shebang, but I’m not confident really in picking Pryce over Sinclair.

Hillyard-Arron R1

Hillyard starts by lunging at the tall Arron, then pops him with a good right hand after their heads clash. Arron trying to jab and stay at distance. He wants nothing to do with mixing it up. Hillyard, though, is trying to jump all over him him. Arron with an uppercut, but man he has no power, so he’s not going to keep Hillyard back. Big right by Hillyard. He’s really taking control of this. Arron’s jab is fine, but if you’re just jabbing and the other guy is actually landing some good punches and staying busy, what’s the big deal about the jab? It’s really all he’s got.

But he is starting to take over with it after I go on that spiel. Hillyard isn’t defending, and now Arron is mixing it up with the right hand behind the jab here and there. Uppercut lands again. Arron has settled this down nicely and Hillyard is having a ton of trouble landing anything. But there’s a right from Hillyard at the bell.

Close round in a lot of ways, but I go with the boxer despite my earlier bitching.

Arron 10-9

Hillyard-Arron R2

Arron’s uppercut is really landing pretty well when he throws it after those jabs. Hillyard roughs him up and tries to unsettle Arron. Hillyard needs to land something significant quickly, because Arron is using his movement to pretty good effect this round. Early in the first Arron was doing some good stuff, but now he can’t find Arron and is missing wildly on left hooks and right hands. Left hook by Arron. Uppercut lands. Arron is taking Hillyard to school now. This has gotten pretty one-sided. Hillyard with a nice uppercut that may have stunned Arron a bit. But Arron comes back throwing punches in combination. Good stuff. Hillyard being warned about the rough-house tactics.

Hillyard pressing now after Arron smacks him nicely again, but Hillyard can’t get anything done.

I’m watching live on Sky in the UK but somehow you seem ahead of me… strange.

Hillyyard, the local hope, is not covering himself in glory by many means, but Aaron looks pretty good. Could be an outsider for the tournament if he can keep fighting at range and jabbing well all night.

by IainLiddle on Feb 26, 2010 3:21 PM EST reply actions

Hillyard-Arron R3

Well, Hillyard has three minutes.

Hillyard slips chasing Arron. Hillyard can’t do anything in the first half of the round, with Arron keeping him at bay fairly easily. Arron is just laying back, and Hillyard hasn’t made him change that strategy. Two long rights from Arron. He’s got nothing on his shots. I mean really.

Hillyard, as Watt says, is showing no real urgency. He might as well just start winging shots. He’s about to be 9-5-1, it’s not like he’s protecting some sparkling legacy. And he’s clearly lost. Arron drilling him with both hands as Hillyard just stands there taking it, frozen like a deer in the headlights.

Nice performance from Prince Arron, and barring a terrible decision he’ll move on.

Pryce-Sinclair R1

Pryce left hooks Sinclair, whose glove touches the mat and the referee makes no move toward the action to call it a knockdown. Arguably should have been, but not sure the punch caused it anyway. Sinclair recovers. These guys are looking for the quick KO. Body shot by Sinclair, and Pryce shakes him with another left hook.

Sinclair is short on just about everything. Watt says it wasn’t an easy round to score. I thought it was pretty easy.

Sinclair with a right that lands, and he’s trying to pick Pryce off coming in, hoping to get him to cowboy up. Sinclair landing his jab well. I don’t know how much zip he really has on those shots, but they’re landing. Pryce coming back now with nice shots. Pryce is a lot more accurate than Sinclair. And he hasn’t been that accurate.

Pryce is taking over again in the second half of this round. There’s a slapping left hook from Sinclair. There was nothing on that. Sinclair is cut near his left eye.

Pryce-Sinclair R3

Pryce is getting stupid. The way he’s showboating I sort of hope he gets knocked out cold. He’s beating a washed-up guy in a three-round fight and acting like he’s Joe Calzaghe against Jeff Lacy. Sinclair is just short on some really big shots, but just short might as well be off by a mile.

Sinclair should probably retire.

Butler-Flournoy R1

Couple of guys standing around. Right hook from Flournoy.

Some folks are singing “Butler Wonderland.” Trust me, guys — there are a lot of Danny Butlers in the pro boxing ranks.

Butler slapping at him like a crazy child. That ruled, kinda. Butler is getting him near the ropes and just going APESHIT. He’s done that twice. Flournoy with some decent boxing.

Now that could have been tough to score, maybe, but I’ll take Flournoy’s boxing over Butler’s slap attacks.

O’Meara is making him look awful now. Concepcion looks like he wants a one-punch knockout and that’s all he prepared to do. O’Meara is dominating. O’Meara is doing all the best of what Flournoy and Arron did in earlier fights.

Apparently being tall and having a long reach makes you “octopus-like.” I do not get that at all.

“But look at this from Prince Arron!” they exclaim. Not one single punch landed that he threw there. Pryce isn’t getting inside very well, but he did early in the round and dug in some clinched-up shots. Arron starting to land jabs, but there’s a short left from Pryce. Long right by Arron. Body shot by Pryce. Jabs sting Pryce again — well, sting isn’t the word.

Jesus Christ, Arron completely dominated that round. Watt says it could even be 10-8 and he’s really not off.

Pryce has definitely adjusted. Arron doesn’t seem to be responding terribly well to pressure from Pryce. I don’t think he likes being tested. That first round cruise and dodging slow Hillyard was what he wants. Getting hit some is not for him.

19-19

Best round of the day so far. Arron still dominated chunks, but Pryce landed a few really good shots, and that’s Arron’s fault. He allowed Pryce to close the gap. Pryce didn’t really change anything other than upping his workrate.

Arron-Pryce R3

Watt has it 2-0 Arron. It could be, too.

Pryce pressing him again. Arron really does not like pressure. Arron just threw one God awful looking uppercut that missed, and since I pointed that out, I’ll also point out that his uppercut has been his best punch tonight, keeping his weak but constant and accurate jab viable.

THERE’S a good uppercut from Arron that snaps Pryce’s head back. Boy this is gonna be close to call. Arron turns and flicks his right hand out with a jab a couple times. He’s boxing very well again. I think he’s settled back down. Pryce is getting tired, Arron is pumping shots from distance and making Pryce miss.

Pryce needs a big final 45 seconds.

Arron 10-9

well, I'll admit it

I did not see Prince Arron coming at all. I figured if he did get past Hillyard he’d get ripped by Pryce or Sinclair. He mostly dominated that fight.

As soon as a puncher realizes he can walk through Arron's punches

Arron gets knocked out. If Flournoy wins, I think he beats Arron. O’Meara I’m not so sure about. He’s a better boxer than Arron, but I don’t know if he gets inside either, and he doesn’t punch much harder than Arron.

Flournoy-O'Meara R1

O’Meara starting kind of aggressive and landing some rights to the body. Straight right down the pipe clips Flournoy. Not much by way of clean punches landing. Flournoy turns it up down the stretch a bit, but I just barely give it to O’Meara.

Flournoy-O'Meara R2

Flournoy is getting some clean shots in, but here comes O’Meara with a charge. This is hard to score. Both of these guys seem like they’re uncomfortable leading, Flournoy doesn’t like pressure and isn’t countering O’Meara well, and O’Meara’s charges generally amount to nothing.

Flournoy with some nice shots as we near a minute left in the round. Flournoy has a small cut. Flournoy round.

Flournoy-O'Meara R3

Left early by Flournoy. Right from O’Meara. Neither were too heavy. O’Meara has really not gotten anything done in the last two rounds, and Flournoy essentially gave the first round away if O’Meara won it at all. I think we’ve seen pretty much the same Flournoy performance that we saw against Butler, but O’Meara hasn’t gone bananas with slap attacks.

Good shots from Flournoy to close it out, and he seals the deal IMO.

First minute is Arron jabbing and Flournoy coming up short. Long looping left from Flournoy is just short. Slow round, especially out of Flournoy, which isn’t going to do him any favors. He’s finding Arron’s range a bit more perplexing than the first two guys did, and not even trying to test it much.

Arron-Flournoy R2

Flournoy looking a hair better in the first half of this round. Arron is still doing range OK, but not as well as earlier. Flournoy is closing distance a lot better than Pryce and Hillyard did and sort of taking Arron out of his jab-jab-jab-jab offense. That uppercut that Arron had used so well hasn’t been here either. Flournoy kind of imposing his will a bit this round and as it goes on, looking stronger and stronger. His left hand is getting in there. It’s not always totally clean, but it’s there.
