Bad Left Hook Live Boxing Results and Commentary: Antonio Escalante v. Miguel Roman
Tonight's edition of ESPN2 Friday Night Fights starts at 9pm ET from the Don Haskins Convention Center in El Paso, Texas, with a 10-round main event between Antonio Escalante and Miguel Roman, which promises action to be sure. An impressive win tonight for Escalante would probably bump him into my top 10 at 122 pounds, a division in the middle of great turnover. This weekend has two key fights in the division, with this one and tomorrow's Vazquez-Sonsona bout.
In the co-feature, Golden Boy prospect Danny Garcia takes on England's Ashley Theophane.

Garcia-Theophane R1
Double left hooks, Theophane got lucky dropping his hands that much. Theophane throws a looping right that doesn’t connect. Garcia is staying in front of Theophane, who is moving. Neither are landing much of anything. So far Theophane has avoided the power shots from Garcia. There’s a right hand from Theophane. Stiff shot to the chest by Theophane after a right to the body.
Theophane 10-9
Don’t expect this will last, but he won that round.

Garcia-Theophane R2
Theophane throwing wide shots to the body, but Garcia is coming out looking a bit more offensive-minded this round. Garcia could really stand to jab. Garcia stalking, Theophane moving around the ring, Garcia…watching him.
When Garcia does attack (not tonight, he hasn’t so far), he’s explosive. Theophane isn’t a bad fighter or anything and he shouldn’t just try to run him over, necessarily, but he’s giving Theophane a ton of breathing room. Garcia gets a couple decent shots in near the end of the round.
Garcia 10-9

Garcia-Theophane R3
Trading shots. Theophane’s best stuff has been looping stuff so far. Garcia just is not jabbing this guy. It’s a really tentative performance from him so far. Part of it is that Theophane is giving him some awkward looks and doing a decent job in there, but Garcia looks like he’s on autopilot. Right to the body by Garcia, who’s starting to bounce around like he just got new batteries. Theophane comes back with some lead left hooks clipping at Garcia.
This is a winnable round for either with 20 seconds left. Nobody does a ton. I think Theophane wins it close.
Theophane 10-9
Theophane 29-28
Bad Left Hook

Garcia-Theophane R4
Theophane opening up some more, and Garcia starting to counter him, chopping with a right hand. Teddy got in his 10-10 in the second, by the way.
Garcia starting to win some exchanges as he’s countering more and more. Theophane is starting to get hit with heavy rights, and Garcia is turning it up. There’s a right by Theophane, but a hard body shot back. Theophane is getting tagged. Garcia is tearing into him, and now Ashley’s backed into the corner.
Trade of body shots, and Garcia wins that battle. Theophane muscles his way out of the corner, though. Theophane is getting hit a lot and hard this round. This may have been the turn.
Garcia 10-9

Garcia-Theophane R5
Garcia is really swinging for the fences this round, after having success doing that last year. Theophane with a right.
Hey, February 23 was Andre Ward’s birthday. Good for him.
Garcia making Theophane miss a lot more these last two rounds. Two left hooks from Garcia, who is taking the fight by horns.

Garcia-Theophane R6
Looping right by Theophane. Stiff left hook from Garcia. Theophane with some body work. Garcia backs him to the corner again, then Theophane quickly ties him up. Garcia loads up a right and a left hook, both blocked. There’s a left hook to the body that looked a little low, and Garcia is warned.
Garcia is really trying to load up on power shots. I don’t think he thought much of Theophane coming in, because he’s fighting like he doesn’t have a plan. But he’s winning on pure talent now.

Garcia-Theophane R7
Some thudding power shots by Garcia in the first minute. Theophane looks like he’s running out of ideas and getting worn down. This hasn’t been spectacular from Garcia, but he’s showing some solid counter-punching ability.
There’s a HUGE right hand by Garcia. Theophane is hurt and on his bike. Garcia coming at him, and he’s swinging. Theophane eats another right. I think he managed to get the cobwebs out though. He’s showing some savvy.
Right hand again from Garcia when Theophane comes in. Great round for Garcia.

Theophane hurts Garcia a bit in the first half of the round, but not major. Rest of the round is Garcia loading up counters. Garcia’s bleeding from the nose. Hard body shot from Garcia. Garcia is loading up that left hook counter like a video game. This was a Theophane round.

Garcia-Theophane R9
Theophane is starting to land his right over Garcia’s left hook. Garcia warned for going low.
They’re taking a point. Uhhh, you know what? This fight is closer than Garcia might want, I think, because now Garcia needs to get going.
A minute left in a round either man can win. Garcia misses badly in the corner. Left to the stomach by Theophane, then a left hook swipes him upstairs. Tessitore thinks Garcia is “no doubt” winning this round. I have some doubt, honestly. Theophane with a right hand. Garcia goes after him just before the bell. Very close round, and I’m going with Garcia just barely. Juuuust barely.

Garcia-Theophane R10
Good work by Theophane again. Garcia has lazily let Theophane back into this fight the last few rounds, and that’s a sign he needs more guys on this level. Garcia has done some good work, but plenty of good work has been done to him, too. Garcia with a left hook. Then a right to the body sneaks in. Theophane with two body shots of his own.
Garcia shaking Theophane up a little bit. Then there’s a wide left hook from Theophane. Pretty good final round in a watchable, interesting fight.

Escalante-Roman R1
Escalante with a quick body shot. There’s one from Roman. Escalante swinging his left hook, blocked twice. Roman just popped Escalante with a Paul Williams-esque uppercut that came from under his own held arm. I hope that gets a name.
Escalante moving around the ring, and now he opens up and starts tearing into Roman, who covers up and waits for the flurry to stop. Escalante with two potshots. Thudding left hook from Escalante over a right from Roman. Then a big left hook from Roman! This is gonna get good. This is one of those “in the air” fights.

Roman is swarming at him, Escalante throwing back. Roman is keeping his guard high, then he suddenly cuts loose. Escalante is more measured and frankly more talented. Right hand from Escalante. Escalante is quicker and showing it. Roman with a left hook, and Escalante ties up. Escalante moving all over the ring. Roman just moving forward, moving forward, moving forward. Escalante flurrying, Roman meets him, and Escalante goes back.
Right hand by Escalante. Teddy’s worried about how much effort Escalante is exerting compared to Roman, and that’s fine analysis. HERE THEY GO with a right from Escalante! Escalante firing away, Roman swinging back!

Escalante-Roman R3
Roman comes right at Escalante to start the round. Escalante goes upstairs and to the body as Joe awkwardly forces in a NASCAR plug and makes sure to mention Danica Patrick. Escalante getting a bit awkward offensively, and by awkward I suppose I really mean risky.
Roman is trying to trap Escalante in the corner. I think Escalante just caught Roman with an elbow on accident. Roman with a BIG right. Sweat flew on that one. Both miss right hands with bad intent. Roman keeps coming even though Escalante wails away with good shots.
Roman still trying to walk him into corners, but Escalante is getting out easily so far. This is a real good fight. I’ve got Escalante up 3-0 but this is a fight where it feels like big things can happen at any moment.

Roman stalking still. Right hands by Escalante. Escalante throwing hard shots, but just cannot get Mickey Roman to back down. There’s another sharp right. Teddy just referenced the Tommy/Billy Batts scene from Goodfellas.
Escalante and Roman both doing work in close. Escalante getting the better of it for a moment, then Roman just starts charging at him. Roman throwing big shots that are just a bit shirt. Referee can’t get in to fix loose tape because there aren’t any lulls in action.
Escalante still winning rounds, but eventually he’s going to have to slow Roman down. Hasn’t so far.

Roman with some BIG shots, and Escalante stumbles back. Roman pressing. ESCALANTE IS HURT! Roman settles it down and here comes Escalante now! Woo!
Escalante’s hands keep dropping more and more. He’s on his bike. Roman is turning this fight, I think. Uppercut stings Escalante! Escalante’s legs are getting jellied. Roman is hurting him. Escalante is going backwards 100% now. Roman is doing nothing but coming forward like a mini Alfredo Angulo or something.
Left hook wobbles Escalante a bit. I think he’s tiring clearly. Roman just will not stop moving forward. Escalante’s punches have lost zip, too. Another right uppercut clips Roman. Escalante has a lot to think about, but he stings Roman with a left hook near the end of the round.

Escalante trying to hold his ground now, getting off first. Escalante’s looking better doing that. Making Roman eat shots might be the best idea for Antonio. Escalante moving back, then he holds up and punches, and then makes Mickey Roman chase again. These guys are landing about 40% of their power shots each.
Right hand for Mickey Roman again. Jesus. Here they go with Escalante landing a big uppercut! Roman still coming forward, now he’s got Escalante trapped again, and Escalante turns him around and throws a right.

Escalante landing again, now going to the body. Escalante really pouring it on this round. Roman still won’t move back, but he’s getting his ass kicked. Escalante with a HUGE flurry, and DOWN GOES MICKEY ROMAN!!! That came on FAST.

There’s some Emanuel Augustus stuff, huh?
Roman has dared him to fight. Escalante knows he’s up big. Roman still wants to fight. Crowd is turning on Escalante.
Mickey Roman is throwing from anywhere he can, and Escalante is tying up constantly. We need Harry Doyle. “It’s smart, but I don’t have to like it.”
Roman won’t stop pressuring. Escalante is gassed. He’s gassed, man. Roman landing some shots.
