Around SBN: Notre Dame's Turnaround: How Have The Irish Done It?

Caseyguerrero

As was the fear when Robert Guerrero pulled out of his March 27 fight with Michael Katsidis, ESPN.com's Dan Rafael reports that Guerrero's wife, Casey, is indeed battling leukemia again.

Casey recently underwent a bone marrow transplant:

"They won't really know if the bone marrow is going to take, so we're hoping that it does," [co-manager Bob] Santos said. "Robert wanted to fight. He thought he could spend half the day with her and train the other half the day, but she started to take a turn for the worse. I told him point blank there is no way I would allow him to fight. Me and Shelly had to talk him out of it. This is a tough sport and if he's going to fight somebody like Katsidis you have to be 100 percent focused. With this situation, how could he be?"

We at Bad Left Hook send our best wishes and prayers out to Casey and Robert Guerrero.

Sad news to hear…

If you want to make a difference… go and donate blood.

I always make a point to donate very 2 or 3 months…

Here is some info about giving blood..

# Bypass surgery uses an average of six pints of red blood cells and six pints of platelets.
# The average liver transplant patient needs 40 pints of red blood cells, 30 pints of platelets, 20 bags of cryoprecipitate, and 25 pints of fresh frozen plasma.
# The average bone marrow transplant requires 120 pints of platelets and about 20 pints of red blood cells.
# Severe burn victims can need 20 pints of platelets during their treatment.
# There is no substitute for human blood. blood tubes
# Sixty percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood, however, only five percent do.
# If all blood donors gave at least twice a year, it would greatly strengthen the nation’s blood supply.
# Every three seconds someone needs blood.
# One out of every 10 people entering a hospital needs blood.
# Approximately 32,000 pints of blood are used each day in the United States.
# Blood donation takes four steps: medical history, quick physical, donation, and snacks. The actual blood collection takes approximately 10-20 minutes. The entire process, from when you sign in to the time you leave, takes about 45 minutes to one hour.
# Giving blood will not decrease your strength.
# Apheresis is a special kind of blood donation that allows a donor to give specific blood components, such as Platelets.
# You cannot get AIDS or any other blood disease by donating blood.

How much blood is taken?

A skilled, specially trained technician will draw about one pint. As a general rule, you have one pint of blood for every 10 to 12 pounds of body weight.

Is that right?

I thought the average was about 8 pints. By that logic, I have more like 20. That can’t be right, surely?

Some people are acting like Pacquiao should be expected to have just gone, "Yeah sure, let’s do something I’ve never done before because your dad made some dumbass baseless comment."

How much blood is taken — won’t it make me weak?
A blood donation equals approximately one pint of blood. The average adult body has 10-12 pints. The vast majority of people will not feel any different because of the donation. A very small percentage may experience temporary dizziness, but some rest and fluids will help you feel better quickly. Your body will replace the lost fluid within 24 hours.

The thing about platelets

Why are platelets important?apheresis
Platelets are small blood cells that help control bleeding. They are often used for those undergoing chemotherapy, which can destroy bone marrow cells. If the bone marrow becomes unproductive, platelet transfusion may be necessary to prevent bleeding until normal marrow activity is restored. Donated platelets must be used within five days.
