What fighters can you name who were or are "Avoided?"

Back in the day, Ronald “Winky “ Wright was avoided like he had the plague. Instead of high-profile fights that carried with them good paydays, he had to settle for three bouts against Bronco McKart. When he finally got his due, he made the most of it by beating Sugar Shane Mosley twice and schooling Felix “Tito” Trinidad. Ironically, his last fight (a UD loss) was against another boxer who carries the label of avoided; namely, Paul “The Publisher” Williams (38-1). Curiously, Williams, who is unusually tall and has a monster reach, also fought another avoided type back in 2007, one Antonio Margorito—who is now avoided for a different reason. Most famously, Floyd Mayweather Jr. reportedly turned down an $8 million offer to fight Margarito, Once these feared fighters finally engaged more prominent names and each other, the hefty paychecks rolled in and they no longer were the high-risk, low reward fighters that they had once been.

Can you name others--past or present?

i think paul williams nickname is “punisher” not ‘publisher’ btw. :)

mike mccallum is probably the most avoided fighter of the 80s. aaron pryor was avioded for a long time as well in the late 70s, early 80s as well.

one old timer that comes to mind is sam langford. i remember reading numerous articles in the ring on just about everyone avoiding him back in the day. jack dempsey is quoted as saying he was afraid langford would knock him silly and thats why he never fought him.

yeah

That Langford book I’ve recommended a couple times made him seem like the most avoided fighter ever. That’s surely at least in part because it was a book praising Sam Langford, but still.

I like it

I sort of like to imagine him wearing one of those old-school reporter fedoras with the “press” ticket in the band. Not that that would really make him a publisher, but it’s the image I got.

Right now, probably Celestino Caballero

A few others who have been trying to make legitimate fights but have been unable to due to a combination of lack of name recognition and being dangerous – Sakio Bika, Lukas Konecny, David Lopez, Ali Funeka.

If Gabriel Campillo isn’t made a mandatory by the WBA, I suspect it will be him pretty soon. Tough style, awkward, southpaw, master counterpuncher, no name recognition whatsoever.

Vernon Forrest.

Oscar generally fought all comers but didn’t seem to want a part of him.
Vernon and Winky Wright could have had a “most avoided fighter” match up in the mid 2000’s…I’m not saying it would have been a good one but maybe interseting to see who would come out on top from the two,two-time conqueror’s of Shane Mosley.

by Matt (Yorkshire) on Mar 12, 2010 11:37 AM EST reply actions

Winky-Vernon was a fight I wanted to see up until Vernon’s untimely death, even. I thought that could’ve been very interesting indeed.

Forrest is a Great Choice

Forrest was a great example Matt . Very underrated fighter . Mayorga is underrated as well in my opinion . His prime was very short being a non training partier but between the Andrew Six Heads Lewis demolition and the second Forrest fight Ricardo was an animal . A real 147 pound beast .

David Lopez

Another one of those who continues to carry the label of "most avoided," is David Lopez. Called "The Destroyer," he was the one being destroyed early in his career. Between 1996 and 2000, Lopez (from Nogales, Mexico) went 14-9 and was stopped 7 times. Later, in 2005, he was TKOd in the 12th round by Fulgencio Zuniga in a bid for something called the IBA Middleweight Title. He has not lost since and, more importantly, has lived up to his nickname; he has won his last 14 in a row. His current record is 38 (KO 23)-12 (KO 9) and he is now a serious factor in the middleweight division. His boxing journey is a rare case of a positive "U Turn" in which a boxer recovers from a terrible start. Most U turns are quite the opposite.

David Lopez is a tough hombre who has worked his way up in the rankings after a dreadful start to his professional career. Now all he needs is an opportunity to engage in a high profile fight with the kind of purse that makes it all worthwhile. In short, the Destroyer needs more willing challengers—guys like John Duddy, Dimitry Pirog, or even Winky Wright.

i wouldn’t say avoided for him. he had the rep as a really great and durable sparring partner who had a great right hand but didn’t really show any great potential when he had his fights. he had some loses when he stepped up in competition as well. orlin norris, tony tucker and buster all beat him before he cleaned lennox’s clock.

Avoided??

UNCLE TEDDY One of the most avoided of his era was Jose “Mantequilla” Napoles. He was a HOT young prospect and although he was THEE top ranked contender FOR YEARS, Napoles was forced to jump TWO weight classes, from 135 to 147, to FINALLY get a shot, as a welter already in his 30s. For years he was a small Jr welter that DOMINATED the welterweight division. Lightweight champs Carlos Ortiz and Ismael Laguna never answered the challenge. Later the Jr welter kings like Eddie Perkins, Carlos Hernandez, Nicolino Locche, Paul Fuji, Dulio Loi… wanted any part of him before, during and after their title reigns. One of THEE ‘Most Avoided’ of his time and.. prime!

Great post Ez .Matequilla looked like a lightweight in size , Ill have to susss out box rec and see what percentage of his career was at 135 . Tyrone Everitt comes to mind when I was a kid as a bloke nobody wanted to fight . I remember the outcry after the Everitt – Escalera fight . Jimmy Young was another spoiler that nobody really wanted to fight . Cheers Fellas ..

Spot On Matt

They reckon Sakio over estimates his worth in negotiating fights Matt . Im no expert on management strategy but Bikas two title shots were against highly respected fighters on their own dunghills in Calzaghe and Bute . They should do the usual Aussie thing and fight a stiff for the IBA or some such title . Green and Mundine have milked the public well using that method.

Avoid can =

some nuance. For instance, though he fought about two million times, nobody seemed to want to give Archie Moore a title shot. Same with Lamotta. Don’t recall a clamor to give Marvin Hagler his title-time, but that brought about his trips into the deathpit of fighting tough Philly fighters inPhilly, and that = good for us all.

Cus D seemed to do some avoiding for Floyd Patterson when it came to Sonny.

Yes, there was no brotherly love awaiting the Marvelous One in the deathpits.

Someone probably already mentioned him, but Nonito Donaire’s phone probably does not ring off the hook.

Someone also probably mentioned this one, but I have heard that many men would have rather climbed in the ring with two hungry bears then fight Joe Walcott – not Jersey Joe, but Barbados Joe, who fought another avoided-like-the-plaguer in Sam Langford.

RE: Charley Burley

Like some of the other posters, the obvious choice was Winky Wright, Paul Williams and Mike McCallum. However, after a bit of research, I would say Charley Burley. Below is a quote that sums him up.

“Too good for his own good” was a statement made by many boxing managers and promoters of the 1940s when referring to Pittsburgh’s Charley Burley. Arguably the greatest boxer never to win a world title, Burley was the most feared fighter of his generation and the most avoided fighter in the history of boxing.

During his career (1936 – 1950) Burley beat three world champions in three different weight categories, but was denied a chance to fight for any title.
