Bad Left Hook Live Boxing Results and Commentary: Smith-Dodson and Brook-Bienias
Today at 5pm ET, Sky Sports presents a fine double-header from Echo Arena in Liverpool, and Bad Left Hook will be here with live, round-by-round coverage, scoring and analysis.
In the night's main event, Paul Smith (28-1, 15 KO) defends the British super middleweight title against fellow hometown fighter Tony Dodson (24-5-1, 12 KO). Dodson has been stopped four times in his five losses, including in his last fight, a 12th round TKO loss to Tony Quigley. He was also knocked out in three by Carl Froch back in 2006. Smith beat Quigley in October by split decision.
Dodson, 29, tells Sky Sports that he's gunning for the knockout:
"I've changed nothing since the Quigley fight because I did everything perfectly apart from that last round." said Dodson. "I was 60 seconds from being champion. "Sparring means nothing. We used to get on but some people forget themselves. "He's a self-made celebrity who thinks he's great and I can't wait to punch his lights out."
Perhaps of greater interest to American fans is rising welterweight Kell Brook (20-0, 13 KO). The 23-year-old prospect takes on Krzysztof Bienias (39-3, 16 KO), who is sure to be vastly overstated by the Sky commentators as some sort of major test. In all candor, Brook should dominate Bienias given Brook's pedigree and talent. Bienias' biggest fight was way back in 2004, when Junior Witter stopped him in two. He was also shut out in 2003 by Oktay Urkal over 12 rounds.
Note: At 6pm ET, we will interrupt our coverage to go to live coverage of the Pacquiao-Clottey weigh-in.

Brook has been out for too long for my liking, with his injuries etc.
Looking forward to seeing him back.Much more so than i am the main event.
It could be ok but Paul Smith should join Tony Quigley down at 160,imo.
They both look to be carrying excess to me.Dodson is a proper super middle but may be a bit shopworn now.

Tony Bellew’s fight is on TV too. It looks like Smith-Dodson is going to be up first. Hopefully Bellew goes on second so I don’t miss anything useful.

Snapping jab by Smith about 45 seconds in. Good jab comes back from Dodson. Now they start mixing it up a bit with about 1:15 left, and Dodson lands a good right hand. Heads clash and Smith is cut. And that’s a pretty good little gash, too.
Dodson isn’t making this pretty but I think he’s controlling the tempo just a bit more than Smith. Very close round.

I don’t score 10-10s unless it’s one of those Vazquez-Marquez rounds where I can’t decide, but this was maybe a 10-10 round.

I think they might’ve just smashed heads again. This hasn’t exactly been a pretty affair. Smith with a right hand. Dodson seems like he’s unsure what to do really. Smith with a good right hand again, a lead right that smacks Dodson pretty good. And there’s another that follows a left hook this time. Smith is bleeding pretty goddamn bad and he’s turning up the heat. I’m starting to like Paul Smith a lot more.
Right hand by Dodson, a chopping shot right to the bad side. Combination from Smith. Smith is bleeding all over the place, and I literally mean he might have like four cuts. He’s got a pretty noticeable batch of scar tissue over his left eye to begin with.
Smith lands another good shot as the round closes.

but the f*cking thing comes on Tuesday so I don’t get anything from the previews.. brilliant
Smith-Dodson R3
Dodson would be really wise to use his jab to distract and keep Smith from throwing, then slam the right at the cut(s). But instead it’s Smith really starting to shine offensively. He’s tagging Dodson, whose left hand is getting caught low every time he lets it fall.
The blood isn’t going so much this round, but then there’s a hard right from Dodson, and a left hook comes in too. Better round for Dodson.

They’re getting warned for rough fighting now after some rabbit punches.
They’re going to look at the cut now. Why now I’m not sure — it’s not really pouring or anything. Smith seems a bit more reluctant to mix it up now. I think he might be getting a bit too safe thanks to the cut. Tons of clinching going on now.
Smith with some left hooks, and Dodson ties him up again. And now Dodson goes over the top and ties him up yet again. There’s a right from Dodson, then he puts Smith back in the headlock he’s been favoring this round. Dodson had a nice third round — he should really be doing more than this right now. Get that cut going again.
I think they might’ve just smacked heads once again. Dodson is kind of fighting like a guy who’s waiting for a cut stoppage to win the fight for him.

Dodson is absolutely fighting like a guy waiting for the cut to get bad enough. Dodson shaken on a big right hand! Dodson is absolutely hurt now. He hangs on like a veteran.
And now after they break, Dodson just falls back on him. He’s clinching yet again. Smith is trying to go for broke and Dodson is still hurting. Smith throwing shots leads to Dodson hugging 90% of the last two rounds.
Dodson with an uppercut. And he does close the round strong, but this was Smith’s round.

Dodson starting a bit more aggressive this round, so that’s nice. Both miss right hands. This referee is great. They tied up again, then broke themselves, and he got between them to shove them apart anyway.
Dodson being talked to now for his tactics. Dodson, though, is getting himself back into rhythm. Smith is not quite there this round, it seems. Dodson is landing with both hands. And there’s a WICKED right from Tony Dodson that catches Smith flush! The fact that Smith didn’t go down there is a minor miracle. That’s exactly how they’ve been clashing heads, both coming in with Smith coming low, and Dodson bashed him with a right this time.

Smith-Dodson R7
Referee is giving them the business yet again to start the round. Hey, guy, I bet they keep fighting the way they have all night. Start taking points or let them brawl. The pep talks aren’t going to change this.
This is a slower round for both of them, with Dodson especially quieting down. It’s like every time I think Dodson is about to take over, he slows down. But now he starts unloading with big shots in the last 40 seconds of the round, and that might not be a stealing attempt, but really a legitimate round-winner. Smith really needs something now. There’s a right from Smith, but Dodson even lands a little counter back.

The cut is getting bad again this round, or at least the flow of blood is anyway. Smith is just not there. As the commentary says, he’s got no rhythm anymore. He’s trying to land one big right — he’s not that sort of puncher, and Dodson is playing it safe enough now that I don’t think he can get it there either.
Close round, but I go Smith just barely in this round.

Dodson warned again, this time with the threat of a point to be taken.
Smith landing good shots now. If this makes the distance and Smith can keep the momentum he’s building right now, Dodson’s really going to regret the rounds he hung back early on. Dodson hurt with body shots!
Dodson’s going to regret holding back.
Smith is really dominating this round, hurting Dodson, getting him totally off balance, and really taking the fight over.

Winnable round for both again with a minute left. But Smith is pressing the majority of the action. Dodson is losing a point. Honestly, it’s been earned. And now I think he’s going to have to come up with something very special. That point is quite big.

To think Dodson has questions over his stamina
he’s done well to fight a pretty quick paced bout for domestic level
Smith-Dodson R11
Smith unloading early in the round! Dodson looks defeated. No other way to put it. He eats a left hook and holds on again. But there’s a big right from Dodson. And Smith wisely ties up, too. Left hook smacks Dodson again.
Left hook again stings Dodson. Dodson is getting hurt now. That one shook him pretty good.

Smith starting quick again, and now with about half the round left Dodson is getting some good body work in. Dodson working hard this round to land something good, but they’re both exhausted. Dodson is definitely getting the best of this round, but Smith lands a solid uppercut. Hell of a final round! They are throwing to end it!
Smith landing good shots, Dodson takes this round, and this was a pretty competitive fight, but I think Smith definitely deserves the W.

With the implications for the negotiations with Mayweather
I think they should have followed the Mayweather-Mosley lead and manufactured some sort of heat here. I know it’s hard with these two but they’ve not really sold us any storyline as far as the casual fan goes
There’s more to it than that though,SC.Like Rafael said,May v Mosley is two stars.

It’s also that you can charge a lot more per seat in Vegas, and I don’t think you can pack the 100,000 in there that people think for Pac-Mayweather. Who wants to pay to sit that far from the ring?

I dropped out for the weigh-in which has now dominated my mind, but the bits I caught of the fight out of the corner of my eye were Brook thrashing him, which he should, since Brook is very talented and Bienias isn’t.

Well that’s nice. I think Brook is a terrific fighter and has all it takes right now to get onto the world stage. I’d give him a great shot to beat Andre Berto, for instance.

i seriosuly doubt he'd beat Berto
at this stage in his career, maybe a year, 18 months after being matched against a bit more solid competition, and he’d be right in the title frame
and btw Bellow looks a real banger as well
by Sweet science on Mar 12, 2010 7:36 PM EST up reply actions
Berto went into the Luis Collazo fight with basically the exact same resume that Brook has right now, and that’s not an overstatement. Berto was running over some really poor competition like Michel Trabant and Steve Forbes. I know everyone like Steve Forbes, and he is a nice guy, but he’s not that good and sure as hell isn’t a welterweight. He won his WBC title in a farce of a fight with Miki Rodriguez. The first genuinely good fighter he ever faced was Collazo. Berto’s good but with lots of questions left. Brook is a hell of a matchup for him, I think, and probably a better pure boxer. Berto has gotten away with making some bad mistakes so far in his career. I think Brook might well take advantage of that.
Now I wouldn’t put Brook in with Clottey or even Cotto just yet, but Berto seems like a good matchup.

fair points
but for Brook, the jump in competition would be huge. The guy he faced last night didnt throw anything at him for about 3 rounds apart from a pawing left jab.
I just want to see how he reacts when he gets hit by a fighter who wants to put him down, or at least wants to win.
one thing I won’t deny is that he could make any welter respect his power, that right hand has some fizz in it
by Sweet science on Mar 13, 2010 7:36 AM EST up reply actions
I’m pretty certain he runs over Michael Jennings, but that wouldn’t be the worst next fight for him. Maybe Senchenko, who isn’t a joke or anything and would give him the WBA’s “regular” title. The problem at welter when climbing like Brook is, is that there’s six guys in the division that are REALLY good, then Collazo existing in his eternal no man’s land, and then a bunch of guys I don’t think are major challenges for Brook most nights.

yeah i agree on Jennings
probably inside 4. Warren mentioned Khan – Brook, I really can’t see it happening within at least the next 2 years, and the reason FW did mention it was because he still pissed at Khan leaving him. But say if they fought tomorow who would you favour.
I guess ur gna say Brook by stoppage because of his power, but Khan would trouble him
by Sweet science on Mar 13, 2010 11:09 AM EST up reply actions
I’d go with Brook. Khan hasn’t fought at 147 and Brook is strong enough and big enough to handle him. In a few years, who knows? Khan could be a long, tall welterweight too.
