Bad Left Hook Live Boxing Results and Commentary: Manny Pacquiao v. Joshua Clottey

Tonight starting at 9pm ET on HBO pay-per-view, Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey go toe-to-toe for the WBA welterweight title. Bad Left Hook will be here with live, round-by-round coverage, scoring, analysis and commentary, and we hope you'll join us for this historic event from Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

We'll have TWO live threads tonight, the first for the undercard and the second for the main event. We're doing this because in the past on big shows, we've piled up 1000+ comments and things started getting a little slow for some people at around 6-700. I don't know if we'll really need it tonight, but for the major fights like this, this is how we'll be doing it from now on.

Note: Undercard coverage will be in the post below this one.

I need a spot of advice

I would love to stay up to watch this one but am unsure about how sensible that is, especially as it is Mother’s Day tomorrow! What’s the estimate on when the main event will start?

I wouldn’t be suprised if Pac turned out to be the incredible hulk in a very good disguise. - Sigidy

Same… Pacquiao-Cotto started at 4:45 GMT if I remember rightly…

I'm going to sleep at 1

With alarm set for 4. Soon as the main event is finished, its back to sleep before up to do my TS Eliot coursework and head off for mothers day.

What

Eliot are you reading OliGold?

by Don From Prov on Mar 13, 2010 5:26 PM EST up reply actions

My coursework's specified on Preludes

But we’ve studied Prufrock, Rhapsody, The Hollow Men and bits and pieces of The Waste Land. I find Preludes a pretty dull piece to be honest, but the others are simply amazing. Prufrock just gets better every time I read it.

Can't avoid The Wasteland (not that anyone should want

to, though Eliot is not beloved among young U.S. poets in this moment).

The Four Quartets are pretty amazing.
They get better as one gets older.

I just had a dream Manny Pacquiao knocked Clottey out cold in the 6th round with an uppercut

Clottey’s right arm went stiff like Jermain Taylor’s and he could not get up.

I ignored the fact Clottey looked like a lighter skinned black guy because the TV said Clottey.

That said, Pac-man via UD with 1 knockdown.

a bit off topic

but i watch manny’s fight with cotto with the sound on for the first time, holy hell jim lampley was in another stratosphere in his bias that night. epically awful and shameful performance by him.

i got a feeling tonight will be the opposite and clotty will be one not getting any respect at all.

Clottey could do it

I don’t think the fight will be a total wipeout. Josh should be able to catch Manny with his head down and, with his long reach, should be able to tag Pac Man with a few shots. I have a full preview here.

Pacquiao-Clottey R1

Clottey misses a left hook to start. Clottey with his guard high, as you’d expect. Manny stepping on Clottey’s lead foot. Clottey blocking everything. Jab by Clottey. Body shots by Pacquiao, hoping to drop those elbows. Good strategy, basic strategy. Right hook by Pacquiao lands nicely. Clottey’s defense picking off almost everything Manny throws, but Joshua’s not throwing.

Body shot by Pacquiao. Clottey’s pucnhes thrown are a bit slow to land consistently. Right hand by Clottey does get in. Interesting opening round for sure.

Pacquiao-Clottey R2

Right to the body by Manny. Clottey’s guard is so good, so tight. Clottey with a right down the pipe, then a jab gets in. Pacquiao throwing back, but mostly being blocked. Clottey is seriously blocking most everything here. Manny with some body shots that get through. Right by Clottey. Uppercut by Clottey gets barely through. Clottey showboating! Right hook to the body by Manny. Uppercut by Clottey. Pacquiao hit with the jab. And there’s another good shot by Joshua.

Manny tries to steal the round, but can’t land. Clottey round.

We’ve got a fight.

Hard left is blocked. Pacquiao snapped back a bit again. Clottey needs to let go. I think he’s in this for sure, but…

Pacquiao is throwing and letting himself look good. Clottey is laying back too far. Left to the body by Manny, and that one was hard and sharp. Right hook to the body by Manny. Left to the body. Man, Manny is getting some REALLY good body work in now. Right hand Clottey. He needs that stuff.

Lefts to the body again. Really good stuff from Pacquiao. Clottey with a lead right, just short. Left to the body again. Two straigh tlefts to the body again. Manny is piling up the body work. This is great stuff from Manny Pacquiao. Excellent round for Manny.

Clottey just will not let his hands go. He absolutely has to, and soon. Manny raking to the body, and landing a little bit more upstairs. Manny getting less in cleanly this round, but dominating just on activity. Joshua just will not let go. He HAS TO. He’s not fighting a BAD fight, but he’s fighting a dumb fight.

Manny using his speed when Clottey finally does throw. Clottey is tentative as hell now. Manny easily wins a round where he didn’t even land much.

Pacquiao-Clottey R6

Clottey puts Manny on the ropes and does nothing. He’s throwing a jab out there but not throwing big shots. Pacquiao lands a right hook to the body. THat was a telling moment there. Clottey is laying back and giving this away.

Clottey throws two, both blocked. This is almost exactly how I figured the fight would play out. Manny’s too fast and too good.

Clottey does land two rights. Now he scores again. Clottey getting back in, but he’s not going to win a card with this round. Pacquiao fireing again, and going back to the body. If Manny rips to the body like he did earlier, he’s got a shot to close the show here in the next few rounds.

Body shot by Manny again, and he’s unloading. Clottey with a right in return. Clottey targets the body, but misses. Manny targets it and lands some. Clottey hurt a bit against the ropes, but Manny doesn’t back off. Clottey getting beaten up a bit now. Even if that’s just arms sent into the head, it will hurt.

Pacquiao-Clottey R9

Manny continues to batter him. This is getting kind of pathetic. Clottey is doing absolutely nothing and it’s getting old. He’s taking zero risks. He’s proving himself as a B+ fighter on his best nights, and this ain’t one of his best.

Clottey with a right. And now he goes back to doing nothing. Manny landing huge in the last 40 seconds. Clottey does not look like he has a single thing left. He’s mentally and physically beaten. He has nothing more to offer for this fight. It’s turned into a non-fight. One guy came to win. Another came to be here.

Pacquiao-Clottey R10

Left to the body again by Manny. He’s getting killed in there. This isn’t even kind of close. Pacquiao ripping to the body with another right hook. Max interviews Clottey’s corner, who say Joshua is afraid of him and isn’t willing to throw.

Clottey finally unleashes some shots, but Manny takes things well. Pacquiao back to backing Clottey down. This is still not close. Joshua does throw some this round, but he’s not even near fast enough.

Pacquiao-Clottey R11

Good uppercuts by Clottey with half the round gone. Manny has landed some shots to the body. Manny throwing again and landing to the body. Clottey does not have a second gear. Manny is unloading and frustrating Clottey, turning the round on him when Clottey finally shows a desire to fight. Clottey gets the uppercut again, but there’s a 1-2 from Manny. Every moment Clottey wins, Manny wins the next five. Manny ends the round throwing at him and backing him away.

Pacquiao-Clottey R12

They hug to open the round.

Left hook by Clottey. Lefts upstairs from Manny. Right upstairs on a lead by Clottey. Left hook by Clottey. Left through the guard by Manny. Right hook to the body by Manny. Right upstairs by Clottey. Clottey has no intention to go for broke. He’s boxing this round like it matters.

Pacquiao wins the final round, and dominates this fight with ease. This was barely a contest.

we wouldn’t want him in politics. we got guys who can do better than him. we all know that Manny is not the most intellectual person around (but he is a boxing genius) so it hurts me that you guys think he can run the country. he cant. people get a feeling that he can run for president as Mr Arum suggested but he doesn’t have a fighting chance. we know Manny

he’s not intellectual when you say he’s a boxing genius? And why would you present your opinion as every Filipino’s opinion. I don’t share your opinion and I think you’re an elitist. The politicians who you say can run the country better, have they made the country better? Typical.
