Mike Tyson has a new show on Animal Planet

Debuting in 2011 and beginning filming soon, a new Animal Planet show starring Mike Tyson will "take audiences inside the intensely competitive and bizarrely fascinating world of pigeon racing," according to a network press release.

"Taking On Tyson" is the program's name. It's always been known that Mike Tyson has a real love for pigeons and pigeon racing, and I guess this is no more strange or surprising than the fact that Tyson was at the Golden Globes winning an award for The Hangover.

It's been a long, strange, and never-dull trip for Tyson, who is excited about the show.

“I’m honored to be a part of this monumental show on Animal Planet,” said Tyson. “I feel a great pride acting as an official representative for all the pigeon fancier’s out there. I want people to see why we love these birds. It feels good returning to the rooftops of the city where it all started for me -- New York.”

Bill Simmons

wrote a pretty good piece on this a while back. While it has become pretty fashionable to hate on Simmons, he did a good job here, IMO.

Hey man that’s Mike. What you going say? Why not? There are more weird shows than that on television as of now.i.e.. Hoarders. A show about dirty people who can’t seem to understand what’s wrong with having trash piled to the ceiling in their home.. WALL TO WALL GARBAGE

I don’t know if there’s anywhere Tyson could pop up now that would surprise me anymore. He could appear in Afghanistan as President Obama’s official envoy to negotiate a peace accord and I wouldn’t bat an eyelid.

Only Tyson could say something like “pigeon fanciers” and make it sound dirty. I remember those stories about him carrying around a pigeon skull in his pocket. Great St. Lucius Marie, the inside of Mike’s head must look like a twenty car pileup on the interstate.

How much you wanna bet they’ll throw a bunch of metaphors about “flying back home” and whatnot? He’d is just a tender little pigeon who got lost on the way home. Fly home Mike, fly home!
