Frank Warren still has some final touches to put on a massive May 15 card, the but British promoter is thinking big with his May 15 main event. Kevin Mitchell will get a chance at a dream when he fights Michael Katsidis at Upton Park, on the home grounds of the West Ham United football club.

Katsidis (26-2, 21 KO) and Mitchell (31-0, 23 KO) will fight for the interim WBO lightweight title. Warren is stacking an undercard, too, with his Olympic prospects and some heavyweight action.

  • Sam Sexton (13-1, 6 KO) v. Danny Williams (41-8, 31 KO)
  • Derek Chisora (12-0, 7 KO) v. TBA
  • James DeGale (6-0, 4 KO) v. TBA for a minor WBA trinket at 168, which of course will be hyped as if it's meaningful
  • Frankie Gavin (6-0, 5 KO) and Billy Joe Saunders (5-0, 3 KO) will also be in action once again
  • BoxRec has Matthew Hall (22-2, 15 KO) listed for action, too

Surely he isn’t hoping to fill it!

I’d be very suprised.

It seems a punchy figure but I wouldn’t be too shocked if they did fill it. Although the capacity could be more with with the floor filled as well…

Seems like he's trying to turn Mitchell into the next Ricky Hatton

If he can get all the West Ham fans to root for Mitchell, it has to help Mitchell’s marketability. That said, Mitchell’s dad didn’t actually play for West Ham.

If he sells the cheap seats at about the same price as the PPV and really promotes the hell out of the card, he might be able to come close to selling it out. Seems like a pretty risky maneuver to me, and boxing promoters generally don’t like taking risks.

Well promotion of people Sky wants to make into

Big British names has been very successful recently so Warren could probably do it with a lot of effort.

This is a fight I can look forward to

and get excited about. It’s gonna be a big test for Mitchell – one I think he can probably pass. The card looks good.

Anybody else fancy going to this?

I’m thinking of heading over for the fight, since it’s only an hour away.

Gonna try to organise something through this group. All welcome!

You'll have to copy and paste the whole link, I think.

You might want to make a separate fanpost for this

I will do shortly.

I thought though that arranging through facebook might be the best plan, simply because the only two from BLH that went to the last one were myself and bazzlad.

BrianBrock was due to meet up, but got in trouble apparently with his better half, DC bottled it (sorry, DC!!) and FCF disappeared off the radar.

Maxirap has all but gone from, well, everywhere really, which is a shame. Who else is there from Britain? I know a lot of the ‘newer’ posters are British, but I’m still not sure who yet. Hence, while agreeing that a new fanpost is one way forward, I was leaning toward gauging interest first. :)

You fancy it, Brick? :D

Sorry about that buddy

I have a distinct cash shortage but if I can maybe borrow some money from my old man then I might be able to join you for this one.

Great Idea

£ would be the only barrier for me – I’ve currently got a few problems with water/plumbing with my house – if it ends up Council’s responsibility – I’m in, but if it ends up mine no ! as it will be £££
Phill is a well traveled fight fan – he’s been to Las Vegas and NY for Calzaghe fights – I reckon a trip to London would ne nowt for him

by BristolOne on Mar 18, 2010 2:48 PM EDT reply actions

Oh dear!

Mate, if it’s the council’s responsibility, you’ll be pushed to get a cough from them. Been there done that with united utlilties.. I’ll probably order in a pizza, have a view wets and watch it all on Sky. Should be a good night of boxing though!

by Phill on Mar 21, 2010 5:42 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Oh NO !

Looks like I’ll be at home as well then mate. Should be a great night of Boxing you’re right Phil and there should be some great banter with the Aussie guys in the buildup !

"A few wets"

Bloody speeling mistaks!!
Yep, Katsidis’ fight against Earle was a great battle. I think Mitchell is too skilled to get drawn in to that type of slugfest. Not seen a great deal of Kats, but he’s deffo an entertaining fighter. Is De Gale on too?

i’m assuming that us yanks can stream this right?

We'll see

Probably stream only, although there’s an outside chance it might get picked up by Integrated PPV. A few of Warren’s bigger cards recently have been. Same day as Khan-Malignaggi, which seems like a bit of a bungle to me.

warren’s petty attempt to get back at khan?

No

Warren’s not dumb enough to think that most Brits will pick a Kevin Mitchell fight over an Amir Khan fight, unless Mitchell’s just much more popular than I think he is. I think he’s hoping to dovetail it, have people turn it into a full night of boxing, starting with this card and then people tuning in after for the Khan card.

Anyone know whether the Khan fight is on Sky Box Office? Will this one be? For the price Warren paid for it, I imagine it will have to be, but I could be wrong.

From memory Warren signed Khan into a 5 fight deal with Sky for the fights to be on Box Office. The fifth fight was against Salita so I think technically he’s free to sign for whoever but with the demise of Setanta then Sky will pick it up and I’m almost certain it will be PPV.

I’d love to see this one.

Katsidis

Mitchells not even in Katsidis’s league. Katsidis by 9th Round KO.

I’m pretty sure Mitchell is very much in the crude Katsidis’ league.
If Mitchell boxes mostly and stands his ground when he has to,he has a very good chance to win, imo.
