Wha fighters can you name who should retire for their own good?
I don't mean one who should retire because his (or her) record is bad. Heck, I know of a bucnh with more than 100 losses who are still useful and raely gett stopped. No, I mean the ones who should retire for their own good--and before they get seriously damaged. I'll start this off with Antwon Echols (32-12-4) who has looked terrible in recent outings on very shakey legs with little snap in his punch. His first win since 2004 came this past weekend against some poor lad from Iowa who was 0-8-2 coming in. The fight was held in Wisconsin. The KO came in the 6th and last round. Antwon should retire and leave us with the memories of his incredible closet classic winover Charles Brewer in 2001.
Can you name some?

Well, I called for Jesse Feliciano to retire for his own good back in 2008, after watching him try to eat Tsurkan’s hands for eight rounds. For awhile, I thought I got my wish, but then he fought Indio this past December, which made me very sad to hear. There’s just no defense there whatsoever, and I refuse to watch his fight anymore. It’s sad because I think he’ll easily get fights whenever he wants them, due to his style of letting guys unload on him.

Roy Jones Jr. really does need to retire. The only money fights out there for him will get him hurt at this point. He does not seem like he can adapt his game to fight in a less risky way, either, and still tries to fight as though he’s as fast as he was ten years ago. He’s not.

Evander more than anyone else imo .
Roy Jones a close second .
Danny Williams should knock it on the head as should Hatton ( if he hasn’t already ).
Eric Morales should of stayed retired , that kid has had more wars than Germany .
Ray Mercers’ got no business left in any ring be it a boxing or mma .
Audley Harrison should also go ….but that’s because he gets on my tits .
Nice one .

In order Roy Jones , Holyfield , Morales , Toney , Hatton , Hopkins, Shannon Taylor in Australia and probably Juan Urango after the beating and knockout he copped from Devon Alexander . Has Castillo hung them up after that diabolical fight on the Pac- Clottey undercard? Cheers Fellas .
"I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me. " Hunter S Thompson.
Echols is very very bad
Echolls v Hopkins 1 was an incredible fight . Antwon has never approached the phyical conditioning he had in that fight . The bloke was a beast . Hops basically ruined Antwon in two long distance beatings . Echolls came to Australia years later and fought Anthony Mundine . He was a shell of the bloke that fought Hopkins . People forget fighters are like racehorses or greyhounds . To get them to absolute peak fitness and to be fight or race fit is a long process and most fighters like most horses or dogs only have a very short window of absolute prime fitness and prime ability .

I think Castillo has retired and
I’d agree with most of those mentioned Holyfield and Jones in particular. Hatton – his motivateion was always very good – if not his discipline so yeah he should def stop. Sir Jack – I agree a few of the British HW’s should now call it a day. JC – Hopkins don’t think he needs to stop, but can’t see much reason for him to carry on – he’s set up as a promoter and unless he changes his mind on Dawson I don’t see what there is for him to achieve. It’s interesting so many carry on even when they don’t have money problems -as you say Ted they risk not only their legacy, but also serious damage to their health.

Vasquez and
Marques. No one will likely agree.
I’m a fan of both and feel they have gone beyond what they need to leave in the ring.
The thought of both enjoying their retirements is one I like.

Jones, Holyfield and Bhop
Holyfield for his own safety,
Jones for his sanity
And Hopkins….. just to piss JC40 of !!
In my opinion, he (Hopkins) promises so much and doesn’t deliver, I know he’s achieved plenty and I respect him for that, plus, I’d still watch him…. but God.. he’s boring.
Also, sad to hear about Harry Carpenter. A loss for boxings yester year.
A few more who are more like journeymen
Jerson Ravelo
Zuri Lawrence (he still has gas in the tank, but he’s suffered so many bad knockouts)
Lamon Brewster (truly truly shot)
Jose Varela (on the wrong side of one too many wars, now getting KOed early every fight)
Czar Amonsot (brain bleed, but still fighting in the Philippines)
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog

Antwun Echols (actually scares me watching him anymore)
Evander Holyfield
Jermain Taylor
Marco Antonio Barrera
Erik Morales
Jesse Feliciano
Lamon Brewster
Walter Estrada
Zuri Lawrence
Israel Vazquez, probably
Roy Jones Jr.
Czar Amonsot
Monte Barrett
I’d add guys like Jeff Lacy, not because he’s so beaten up, but because outside of club fights, beaten up is all he’s gonna get from here on out.
Glad that Oscar Larios and Jose Luis Castillo have both given it up.

Is Wayne McCulloch still fighting?? If he is, then there’s an example of a guy who’s too brave for his own good.
He took some thunderous shots of Hamed years ago and still didn’t buckle.

Hatton
Great fighter to watch. So, he really built a connection to the fans. Sharp interview, clever. He is a character that is easy to care about.
Selfishly I’d want to watch him again, but when you go at it hard outside the ring like by all accounts he does, it goes down hill very fast inside the ring, once it starts. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him really hurt by someone who he may have been able to handle only a year before.
Oddly, there may also be reason to worry about him once he does retire. Some can’t ever settle down into a pedestrian life.
John – don’t worry about Hatton and that pedestrian life . Ricky has always been happier slugging ‘em down in a pub than slugging ’em out in a ring .
Ricky will retire , eat , drink then eat and drink some more .
In fact , the next time you see Ricky Jerry Springer may be hauling him out of his house with a crane .
I love Ricky and I don’t wanna see him fight no more .
Nice one .

Cliff Couser, the guy’s dotted the record of a few names and was never a great fighter, but he’s 38 and has lost 9 in a row, 8 by knockout. It’s time for “Twin Tyson” to stop having his brain scrambled.
Lionel Butler- in the midst of a go nowhere comeback at 42, just got iced in 2 by a prospect he would’ve busted in his prime.
Omar Sheika- will make his 2nd appearance on the club circuit on 03/26 after getting toyed with by the ghost of Roy Jones. He’s only 33, but it’s an old 33 and he was never really world class to begin with, hang em’ up Omar.
Franz Botha-tabbed for geezer match against commander vander, but the Botha train left the station a long time ago, I see him getting beaten up badly by any decent younger heavyweight.
Lovemore N’dou-was able to win the battle of N’dous and outwit the lesser of two Hattons, but let’s face it, especially at welterweight, I see nothing in his future but a beating at the hands of a prospect who has his shit together.
William Joppy-He’s 39 and got beat up by Bute in his last fight of significance and in his most recent fight lost to a guy that Arthur Abraham took out in 3 in a middleweight title defense. The colder amongst us could say that he’s getting his comeuppance for humiliating a 48 year old Duran. However way one slices it, Joppy’s got nowhere left to go but down and he needs to call it a day before he really hits bottom.
You could also say hypothetically, Edwin Valero. Even though Valero’s in his prime and a dynamic, poised slugger, he’s got that past brain bleed from that motorcycle accident, combined with the fact that he fights with his chin in the air with his mouth open.
Ooh, good one with Couser. Last time I saw him he was another guy that obviously had zero interest in really being there, just cashing a paycheck.

derv, I saw Omar Sheika fight in NH last year, and his hand speed was impressive as hell. I think he has a few wins left in him. I really do. William Joppy is totally shot. Lionel Butler has come along way down since icing Tony Tubbs.in 1992, but losing to Andrey Fedosov may not be the ending signal. Still, very interesting post.

Sick Of the Danny Green - Mundine Farce
Wlad , Mundane isnt retiring , him and Green are going to make another financial killing in Oz convincing the brain dead public that they are great , world class boxers . I dunno which of them I dislike more LMAO Green with his bullshit " I am the common man crap" which is meant to appeal to the average Bogan or Mundine with his pissweak Ali – Ropy Jones – Floyd Mayweather imitation . I’d be happy for them both to bugger off if they don’t want to fight legitimate fighters at their own weights . Why do you think Green is fighting a bloke ( Sciaca) who Kessler smashed in 2004 and who last fought a semi world class opponent in 2006 ? ( Silvio Branca, who won every round against Sciaca) .Because he beat Mundine. Anthony has only fought four even remotely world class fighters his own size . Ottke kayoed him . Kessler easily outpointed him , Sciaca beat him 6 years ago and he beat Green . Green is even worse mate . He lost twice to Marcus Beyer and lost to Mundine . Dannys last eight opponents ( including the 40 year old shot Jones) are a joke . Jason De Lisle , Paul Murdoch , Otis Griffin , Stipe Dews , Anthony van Niekerk , Julio Caesar Dominguez , Jones and now the faded shell named Manny Sciaca . If Green is a cruiser why the frig isnt he chasing Cunningham or another top shelfer at the weight ? If hes a 175 pounder he can chase Dawson or Pascal . Mate you continually put shit on Hopkins yet want to tell us how good Green is .Blind Freddy can see Green is just chasing Mundine because he is afraid of fighting anyone with a pulse . . More bloody perspective is needed mate ! Give me Paul Briggs and Vic Darchynian over those two fakes any day . Take it easy mate and dont think Im having a go at you LMAO Im just sick to death of the pair of em .
"I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me. " Hunter S Thompson.
I have to admit the whole Mundine-Green situation puzzles me a little. Green does a Ghostbusters routine on old RJJ, and now he’s going to fight Siaca. It seems like Siaca or Soliman are becoming the default divisional opponents in Oz. Unclear to me if there’s any sort of career plan for Mundine. He moves from a very live division down to a very dead one, but seemingly only to fight locals and stiffs. Always talking but are there any management moves going on? He knows that 160 beltholders aren’t coming to his hometown to fight him, right? And now that Soliman has moved down to 160 as well, does that mean these guys are gearing up for a trilogy? WTF is going on?
"I fought Sugar Ray so much, I’m surprised I’m not diabetic."

They outsmarted themselves Jrok
My take on the whole thing was that Mundine dropped down to 160 so he didnt have to fight Kessler to whom he was the mandatory challenger at 168 . I still reckon they will end up fighting Green at 175 . There’s no other fights out there than either Mundine or Green can make the sort of money they did fighting each other again . The problem for Mundines mob is that Green by beating Jones is now holding the whip hand in the negotiations . Mate Soliman and Mundine have already fought 3 times , it wouldn’t surprise me if the end up fighting again . Nothing would as far as “The Hyena” is concerned . He’s been preying on the old , the small and the lame for a long time . Cheers Mate

Siaca seems like a stay-busy fight
I know Green’s team has been in talks with Hopkins, Tarver and Holyfield. Two of those three are tied up, and the Tarver talks didn’t start in earnest until the Siaca fight was already booked. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Green fighting a bigger name soon.
As for Mundine-Soliman, sadly they’ve already had a trilogy.

Green can’t beat any of those guys. I think that even Holyfield would do him in, wielding that forehead like old rhinocerous going for one last meal.

Agreed Jrok
Evander would be the worst for Danny even at his advanced age , Jrok. Green is no Toney , he has slow feet , is technically average at best and has average hand speed . Evander’s too big and too hard for Danny in my opinion . Big diff in strength and hardness between Roy Jones jr and Evander . Plus Holyfield would still hit hard enough to hurt Danny . Jones has no power whatsoever these days .

Waste of Talent in Some Ways
After Mundine fought a good competitive fight with Kessler , then easily outpointed Green and stopped Soliman I thought he was going to try and make something of himself as a world class fighter , Ted . Been a waste of talent but he makes big bickies beating up B and C grade fighters on Aussie pay per view so I suppose I cant blame him. Since he’s dropped down to 160 hes lost a lot of power and at his age hes not getting any quicker .

3 Fighters I never want to see in the ring again....
Simple. Erik Morales; if you ask me what is done is done. He only got beat by the best, but not only that, he beat the best. He has nothing to prove and will always be one of the greatest fighters of our times.
Israel Vazquez and Rafeal Marquez should NOT fight in May. 3 of the best fights I have ever seen in my life on both halfs of the fighters, but I do not think either one needs to prove anything to us from the thrashing they dished out in previous meet ups. Yes, Vazquez came out on top with two victories, but in the trilogy as a whole, there were no winners or losers. Both fighters came out heroes and set an example to boxers who ain’t got a heart in the ring that if you wanna be part of the best, it doesn’t matter if your quick, fast, strong…you gotta be throwing them punches from the heart aswell as showing up most respect for your opponent.
Peace and Love,
Shnizz x
P.S. Ricky Hatton should also stay the f**k away from the ring! It is definitely for the best. He also has nothing to prove, he got beat by the two best fighters in recent times.
Shnizz, goos stuff and welcome aboard, mate.

I’m not sure I agree that Hatton should retire. That was a brutal icing that Pacquiao dished out on him, but if he wants one or two final duels at 140 I don’t see any reason he can’t do it. A couple of crownings doesn’t necessarily make a guy shot.
I’m not even sure Jermaine Taylor should quit fighting. As far as I can see it, neither of these guys will ever win a title again, but there are top guys out there who are in much more danger of being seriously hurt. A big puncher will always beat Taylor, but he would provide a stiff test for up and coming prospects if he wants to play that role.
"I fought Sugar Ray so much, I’m surprised I’m not diabetic."

I was with you on Taylor until DiBella said (when Jermain pulled out of the Super Six) that he still doesn’t remember the last round of the Abraham fight. That’s bad news.
I’m not sure about Hatton either, but he might have to fight at 147, where he’s not particularly good, because the older he gets the harder it’s going to be to boil to 140.

He must fight guys like Ouma, though. Win two and then retire. As for Hatton, I have to disagree based on his changes in weight. Man, that’s stuff can catch up with you insidiously. Stiil a rematch with Paulie might be nice or a fight with Juan Diaz (who I think might be shot).

Hatton wrecked Paulie and would do so again. It was fun to watch Hatton actually jab in that fight – and he was beating Paulie with his jab!!! He would do so again.
If Hatton can still get down to 140, I’d have him even money with Diaz. I have my doubts that Hatton can ever take a shot from a big puncher again, but against light punchers like Paulie and Juan he can still dish out some punishment
"I fought Sugar Ray so much, I’m surprised I’m not diabetic."

Agreed. His fight against Paulie was a remarkable effort on his part. He did everything right that night. It was like the old Hatton had come back for one last beat down. Loved it!

If he is truly done, Taylor had one of the most gruesome schedules I’ve seen towards the tail-end of his career. Three big, stalking punchers with hard chins had their way with him. Pavlik, Froch and Abraham are nothing to be ashamed of. All three are or were determined, cold-blooded killers.

Underrated resume.
Taylor actually has one of the best resumes in boxing yet gets bugger all credit for it . Hopkins twice , Winky Wright , Corey Spinks , Pavlik twice , Froch and Abraham .
"I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me. " Hunter S Thompson.
And he also gave them all tougher fights then people give him credit for two. Had Pavlik down in the first one, fought him tooth and nail in the second one, had iron-chinned Froch down and a mile back on the cards and almost went the distance with both him and Abraham. These are all good things.

A few Aussie Fighters that should Hang Em Up
Shannon Taylor , John Hopoate , Bob Mirovic and Nader Hamden. I was just sussing out the actual official ANF ratings and theres no sign of Green , Mundine , Bika or Darchynian . I dont know what thats about , perhaps if you are world rated you dont get an Aussie ranking . Im in the dark on that one .

Rugby League back in the 70s in the only sport Ive seen that is nearly as dangerous as boxing . Biting , king hits , eye gouging , kicking etc etc Makes Ice Hockey and Gridiron look like cricket . They cleaned it up in the 80s as the only blokes that would play it were border line psychopaths . Hoppa should have been a 70s player he was too old school for the modern era . Maybe it’s time for Concrete to hang em up. He’s lost 7 of his last 8, 4 by TKO, one of em against a guy with a 5-8-1 record . Lost his last fight by TKO1 over in Germany. Forgot about Konkrete. That’s far beyond a maybe. I sometimes miss George. Some of his banter with Merchant was entertaining, and occasionally he would say something that was so weird or funny that it made me smile. Lennox on the other hand has such a steady stream of weirdness flowing out of him that it sort of blends into the background. It doesn’t really add anything, and it’s not really interesting and sometimes it’s downright scary.
Most of all though, I just wish that all commentary had an off button, similar to the dump button TV studios use to edit out curses except on your remote control like the SAP button. I love the hearing the sounds of a fight, especially the crowd and the sound of big punches connecting, and there are times it is just absolutely ruined by non-stop blathering. I know for sure the technology exists for this, and I also know that there are other sports and commentators that it would be rigorously applied on.
"I fought Sugar Ray so much, I’m surprised I’m not diabetic."

Isn't that funny?
When Shannon cleans up his act, he is actually enjoyable to listen to and give sharp analysis. It’s amazing, very Jekyll and Hyde. Get him in a different room and he turns into a disgusting moron.
But as far as his career in the ring goes, he is done. He looked immobile against Iggy, and just unable to compete at the top level. It is a sign of the times in American heavyweight boxing that there are still a few people curious to see Briggs-Klitschko here in 2010. It would be a horribly one-sided Klitschko victory, and just tawdry in terms of who gets to jump into a shot and why. Briggs has had 3 fights in four years, and really during the last eight years of his career his best win was probably over an ancient Mercer and china-chinned Liakovich.
"I fought Sugar Ray so much, I’m surprised I’m not diabetic."
-- Jake LaMotta
And beside which, he is just getting done with a (worthless, pointless) NYSAC suspension for testing dirty in his last for an unnamed substance. Shannon’s manager is claiming it was something in his asthma medication, which Briggs has used as a catchall for past disappointments so I’m not necessarily buying it. Anyway the fight was in December and NYSAC gave him three months and buried the name of the substance in their vault. Three months for a fighter who fights once a year at best. They are as corrupt as they ever were under Ron Stevens, it is a shame.

Shannon Briggs has
“entertained” me with some of the worst fights I’ve seen.
Watched Manny/Clottey again and I must say that Manny Steward runs the steadiest stream of shit out there—and also doubles back and contradicts himself now and again. George Foreman was from another planet, Manny has some sort of attention-deficit disorder.
Big George: Never follow a puncher around the ring.
When Oscar gets his jab going and is up on his toes. …
I’ve grown to like Manny as a commentator, actually. Mostly because of the silliness. He kinda reminds me of Cleveland. Plus when he gets mad, he REALLY gets mad. His shaking anger over the Soto-Lorenzo DQ was great stuff.

That "first 15 seconds"
comment is right on the money. However you could mark out two minute intervals over the course of a fight and at each juncture he’d probably be recalling the fight in another way.
That’s an exaggeration, but the man has the directional attitudes of a politician.
Yeah, this is the one thing that would always bug me about Manny’s shtick. He could never be wrong. Everything he said about fight or fighter was unfalsifiable because every time the tables turned he’d pretended that he predicted it all along. “See just like I was sayin’…”
We all know guys like this and it’s always grating.

He was a little testy with Lampley and Kellerman the other night.
I don’t want to hang out with any of these guys, but I’m sure they don’t mind.
Isn’t “Lamps” another girlfriend slugger?
And Max likes himself enough that he doesn’t need anyone else liking him.
He'd

Where would your future in television lie then?
Probably, the same place it lies no lmao.
I think Lamps is probably a nastier drunk. Lampley would get red in the face, start a screaming argument about some petty bullshit. I can picture myself having to sock Lamps, but not Merchant. Jesus, Larry looks like he is rapidly be approaching 100 years old. He would probably disintegrate like a mummy if I uncorked on him.

You made me laugh about Lampley: He does have one of those faces that I can imagine getting all red and huffy. He might think too highly of his hair to chance getting it mussed, though. Max would fight you. Throw a jab and jump over the bar. Call Teddy on his cell.
