Bad Left Hook Live Boxing Results and Commentary: Arthur Abraham v. Andre Dirrell

Tonight at 10:30pm EDT, the Super Six World Boxing Classic returns and hopefully regains some lost momentum when Arthur Abraham travels to Detroit to face Flint, Michigan's Andre Dirrell. In Stage One, Abraham knocked out Jermain Taylor, and Dirrell lost an ugly, controversial decision in Nottingham to Carl Froch. Abraham currently leads the tournament's early standings with three points. Andre Ward and Carl Froch both have two.

For those who are not Showtime subscribers, check your channels tonight, because Showtime is on its free preview weekend. Not all carriers pick these things up anymore, but it's worth taking a look.

Comcast still doesn't have the channel on free preview

Not that it matters for me….it’s tape delayed to the West.

anyone going to be watching HBO instead?

If you are and want to RBR at least Funeka-Guzman (if Abraham-Dirrell ends early enough, I may be able to get to Maidana-Cayo), I’ll throw up a post for that too.

Main event starting....

when? I think there are something like 3 fights on the undercard and it all kicks off at 10:30 eastern on Showtime. So when do you predict AA vs. Dirrell will come on?

by Vartanyan on Mar 27, 2010 3:43 PM EDT reply actions

There are no undercard fights being televised. Abraham-Dirrell is the only fight on Showtime.

Did Dirrell do any stupid per-fight trash talking like he did with Froch? I hope the kid is growing up. He will have to grow up quickly, cause he is going to fight a man tonight. Dirrell can win a decision by fighting smart, but if he lets up even for a second, AA can take him out. My prediction: 80% chance Dirrell learns from the Froch fight and punches without excessive running, 20% chance AA catches him and it’s lights out.

Thompson Boxing Promotions lightweight Danny "El Travieso" Hernandez (10-0, 6 KOs) was shot in the head last night. Southgate, California’s Hernandez was left by an anonymous person at a clinic at 4AM this morning. He’s been in surgery since 7AM. Doctors don’t know what will happen. The bullet didn’t enter the brain, but he suffered major trauma. Hernandez is at St. Francis Hospital in Lynwood, California. Nobody knows who did it. Promoter Ken Thompson is asking for your prayers and your thoughts for Daniel Hernandez.

When Ahmet Oner's the promoter

Anything’s possible.

I can’t say he’s actually doing anything, but there is no promoter who I am more convinced fixes fights than Oner. Heck, when Airich-Williams wasn’t going his way, he nearly ‘fixed’ the bout on the fly. But even with Solis and Gamboa coming up, there were a lot of REALLY sketchy fights.

It's the old curse

The apple always falls very far from the tree. It is very hard to think of a son who remotely measured up to a great father. Layla Ali is probably the closest a kid has come to matching pappa’s success. Mostly, I think they just come up softer, so it’s natural.

Only 0.001% of fighters are going to be “great”. I’d bet that the sons of greats have a better chance of being “great” than the average joe on the street, but the chances of it happening is so slim, and there are so few greats to have kids, that it just doesn’t happen too much.

Abraham-Dirrell R1

Body shot by Dirrell to start. Another body shot. Remember, Arthur almost always starts slow. Another left to the body. Arthur is starting like he always does, with his peek-a-boo up and not much coming back at the other guy. Dirrell got a nice right hook in, too, and it has marked Abraham with some redness. Hook to the body by Andre. Arthur isn’t doing much at all. Nothing new. Most of Dirrell’s shots are being easily blocked, but he is landing some to the body, which is a good idea, and he’s easily winning the round.

Abraham-Dirrell R2

Abraham throws a right, but it’s just off the mark. Dirrell doing what he did in the first round, and as Bernstein says (and was said by everyone leading up), he’s looping his shots to try to get around the guard, which is very smart. Dirrell steps back and makes a right come just short. Dirrell is doing very well so far. Again, nothing new for Arthur Abraham, but you can’t ignore what Andre’s doing just because Abraham is as advertised.

Abraham with a shot, but Dirrell fires back in bunches. And there’s another combination from Andre. Another Dirrell round, punctuated by two nice stiff lefts down the pipe at the bell.

Andre starting to get a little more flashy this round, looking more confident. Abraham is starting to stalk with more purpose, it seems. Dirrell is so much busier that he’s easily winning so far. It’s always “so far” with Arthur. But again, Andre’s work has been pretty terrific. BIG right hand by Abraham, but Andre takes it well. Abraham storming now! Another right lands! Left uppercut lands! Huge late round turnaround from Abraham! We’ll see how Andre responds in the fourth. Arthur is ready to roll.

Dirrell takes this one by largely dominating the first two and a half minutes.

Abraham misses a big left hook. He’s been a little wild, and Andre’s been able to make him miss plenty. Andre controls the rest of the majority of the round, just as he has all night so far. He’s really piling up rounds, and Abraham might need something special.

Abraham-Dirrell R6

Low blow by Dirrell, but Cole apparently didn’t see it. Clearly low, too. Abraham is missing badly when he opens up, and just not landing enough or throwing. Abraham responds to another borderline low shot, but there’s no stop in action. Dirrell is, basically, showing everything I thought he could do all those times I tried to be a big supporter of him. His talent is shining tonight. It’s a great style matchup for him, but having it and doing something with it are two different things. He’s doing something with it.

Abraham-Dirrell R7

Dirrell slips on a logo. Can we learn to make a non-slippery logo already? Jesus Christ, we have the internet, hybrid cars and we’ve been to the moon. A logo that isn’t slippery shouldn’t be really hard.

First half of the round is a bit more of the Dirrell running than the rest of the fight, but not horribly. Now Dirrell falls down when they get tangled up, and it looked like Abe rabbit punched him pretty good there. Abraham bleeding. Abraham has a bad cut on his right eye.

LEFT HAND BY ABRAHAM, BUT ABE FALLS — no knockdown! Terrible call by Cole. That was a knockdown.

Abraham-Dirrell R8

Abe’s corner tells him he needs the big shots, or he “doesn’t have a chance anymore.”

Abraham is letting his hands go big with 1:40 left, but not landing anything big. Still, Andre is trapped in the corner. Oh boy, he could be in trouble. He’s not getting hit clean, but it’s a TERRIBLE idea. Cole stops the action. Great.

Left by Andre. Abraham is really chasing him this round, but Dirrell is standing up to him. It might not be smart, but he seems determined to prove himself. First round I give to Abraham.

Abraham-Dirrell R9

Dirrell gets back in the groove in the opening minute of the ninth round. And that cut is opening up pretty good again. Abraham shaken just a bit on a clipping shot. Right hand to the ribs by Dirrell. BIG LEFT BY DIRRELL! Great counter-shot! Abraham’s getting busted up.

Cole’s going to have them look at the cut, which is flowing very well.

And the fight will go on. Pretty long break there.

Arthur, if he wants to win, better get going. ABRAHAM STOPS FIGHTING ON A LOW BLOW, and Andre is charging on him! There was no break by Cole. Abraham is maybe too used to being in Germany.

Abraham gets him in the corner, and Dirrell this time gets the fuck out of there ASAP. Big right by Abraham, but not a ton of zip there. Left hook behind it doesn’t do much either.

Dirrell again flops to the floor when he gets in any sort of trouble. This is quite a performance by Andre, but he flops more than Vlade Divac for God’s sake.

Right hand by Abraham clips Dirrell, but then Dirrell goes down — on a solid punch that landed, and Cole just called no knockdown. I’ll wait for the replay, though. But on first look that was another terrible call by Cole.

Dirrell is in trouble here. Abraham is charging at him. Dirrell is not in a good way now, and he holds on when it gets to the corner. Abraham letting loose now. Body and head. Big right by Abraham! Dirrell is going to have to survive the rest of this fight if he’s to win.
