Quotes: Schaefer calls for three million buys, Mosley calls for a win, Mayweather likes money

Shane Mosley and Floyd Mayweather Jr. were in New York City to pretend to have an on-stage scuffle and give some quotes to everyone. Here are the quotes. Above is a bit of the scuffle, which looks simply thrilling.

Floyd Mayweather Jr.

"It takes two to make a mega fight.  Shane Mosley is one of the best welterweights of our era and I want to fight the best and continue to fight the best.

"I am not only in the fight business; I am in the check cashing business."

"When it comes to performance enhancement drugs, I stepped up the plate. I want to show the world that my sport is clean."

"I am able to generate millions of dollars.  They say Shane is the WBA Champion, but we all know that belts do nothing but collect dust."

"You can hate it or love it, but this is a God given ability.  I am taking these skills and showing the world that I am going to entertain."

"There's always an excuse.  If I beat someone, they say he's over the hill.  If I beat someone else, they say he is too slow.  I can just be me and be the best."

"There is nothing cool about taking punishment.  There is nothing cool about getting hit in the head."

"There is no blue print to beat me, and that is all that matters."

"You can't judge a person before you know a person.  I am just like every body else.  I go home, I love my children, I love my mother, but I also have a gift."

Shane Mosley

"May 1 symbolizes something.  After this fight, it is going to be clear.  It is going to be the date of Mayweather's first loss."

"It has been a long time since I have had a chance to show the world that I am the best fighter.  I have wanted to be the best and have people understand that I am the best."

"I just want to say I am going to take my hat off to Mayweather.  For a minute I wasn't going to get a fight from any of these top fighters and now I will.  I would like to say that it is going down May 1 and it is going to be me and Money Mayweather."

"After this fight there won't be anything else to pick."

"It is going to be clear that there is an ass whooping and I am about to give it to him!"

Naazim Richardson, Mosley's trainer

"You can't really say one is better than the other.  At this level they are both special.  It's proven."

"This will be one of the great ones.  One-hundred-forty-seven pounds is a premiere weight class.  May 1, Shane will matchup against one of the best athletes in the sport."

"Picking a fighter is a lot like picking a partner to dance.  You ask a young lady to dance.  If she says "No" you move on to the next lady.  Shane's eagerness to fight sometimes hurts his negotiations.  He is always so eager. 'I'll take the test.'  'I'll fight with one hand, you fight with two.'  Floyd accepted the challenge."

Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather Promotions

"Shane knows what's coming.  He just doesn't want to admit it, but he knows. Floyd "Money" Mayweather is ready."

"This fight has been in the making for ten years.  It's going to be a hot, hot fight."

"There is a difference when you are talking about Floyd.  Once you get your ass up in there, it is a whole different ball game."

Oscar de la Hoya, Golden Boy Promotions

"We are here in a big mega fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Sugar Shane Mosley.  This fight reminds me of Sugar Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns, the classic fights we used to watch on TV."

"It's like watching the Super Bowl or the NBA Championship.  It's boxing's version of the World Series.  It is the fight to watch for this year because not only are you going to get a great event, but you are going to get a great fight."

"I fought both fighters and I know what is going to happen.  Do you want to know what I think?  I know there is going to be a knock-out and it ain't going to be pretty!"

Richard Schaefer, Golden Boy Promotions

"We can pick the fans as winners already.  This is one of the best fights, one of the biggest in the history of boxing."

"I wasn't kidding when I said we would make one million homes for Mayweather vs. Marquez.  I wasn't kidding.  We did.  This fight is going to break many, many records."

"This is the fight where one plus one equals three...the three stands for three million homes.  We will break all PPV records with this fight!"

I’m gonna put my money down that this doesn’t get 3 million buys. But it’s nice to dream.

There is, like, no chance they hit 3 million. Schaefer has gone Arum on that one.

Could you imagine if they did, though? You know people are going to pay just because they want to see Mosley knock Mayweather out. And hate-money is still money-money.

The problem in achieving a record-breaking number here is the fact that Mosley really has no audience and never has. Mosley’s one of my favorite fighters and I’m damn glad he’s getting this chance, and if the world were fair he’d have been a massive star instead of “just” a big star within boxing, but the world isn’t fair, and Mosley has never been a major draw. Mayweather and Pacquiao really might be able to do 3 mil together. It’s an astronomical, insane number of people buying a fight on PPV.

My (very) early guesstimate is 1.4 million, which would make it the biggest boxing PPV since Oscar-Floyd. Floyd’s a genuine star.

I think it’ll actually do a tad more than 1.5 million. I’d say somewhere in the 1.7-1.8 range. That is, of course, if promoted correctly.

Well put... :)

Some people are acting like Pacquiao should be expected to have just gone, "Yeah sure, let’s do something I’ve never done before because your dad made some dumbass baseless comment."

Gah!

Already cheap seats sold out. If anyone has the hook-up shoot me an email, that would be awesome.

Also I think 2 million might be attainable but 3 seems a little far off. Gonna need to have a really good undercard to get 2 million as well.

by waldo47 on Mar 3, 2010 1:10 AM EST reply actions

Undercard won’t matter. Oscar-Floyd and Oscar-Manny had putrid undercards, and so did Pacquiao-Cotto. The truth is nobody but people like us give a crap about the undercard, which saddens me greatly and I still think is no reason to not put on good stuff like the Mayweather-JMM card, which didn’t turn out great, but was a good attempt anyway.

I hope they finally give Saul Alvarez some burn.

They should move Victor Ortiz-Campbell to the ppv too. But I’m okay with that on WCB

99% it will be Alvarez-Matthew Hatton

Which should at least be an entertaining fight, if not a competitive one.

This really is going to be a good fight

I went to youTube and watched Shane’s last fight against Marg and honestly that’s not a good reference to this fight. I know a lot of you trembled at the name of Margarito but I always felt like he was a slow target for the likes of Mayweather and Shane proved it. A better fight is the Cotto fight. Watch that and you will get a true assessment of his strengths and weaknesses.

But even with the Cotto fight, it’s still a little hard to gauge what he will do against May. Floyd will NOT come in with his head like Cotto. He will pick when to stand in the center of the ring and exchange and the exchange will be on his terms and then he will move. If Mosely misses with those hard right hooks that he throws, he will be vulnerable as hell for that lunging left hook that Floyd loves to throw. Man, it’s like a chess match. It will be good.

De La Hoya's quote

there’s gna be a knockout and it aint gna be pretty….. is that a dig at floyyd???

by Sweet science on Mar 3, 2010 8:16 AM EST reply actions

Definitely

I liked when Shane talked about the significance of May 1st. Floyd is probably kicking himself for not catching that during negotiations.

And if Mayweather wins

Does that make it Money May Day?

Somethings wrong with Mayweather

how is he going to ask for Mosley to fight with one arm and Mosley accepted!!!? :P

Oscar also said:

""It takes two to make a mega fight. Shane Mosley is one of the best welterweights of our era and I want to fight the best and continue to fight the best." (Floyd Mayweather)

Anyone else remember the Brian Kenny interview? The one where Floyd keeps on about Mosley having 5 losses, about Mosley beating Margarito who beat Cotto who beat Mosley? “All these guys beating each other and no-one ever beat Floyd Mayweather”….

Seems like Floyd has taken a leaf out of Mr Arum’s book after all…..

Oh come now.

The fight is on. At this point you shouldn’t care who said what or who shot John. What’s the point? Really? They all do it. All of them. Roach is the worst. But they had their chance. Now it’s about May and Mosely.

Yeah, I don’t know why Roach gets a pass so easily. He spends entire promotions telling you why the other guy sucks. Oscar was shot, Hatton was no good, Cotto was too slow. Then they wonder why people always say, “Oscar was shot” or “Hatton was overrated” or “Cotto was too slow.”
