Moments in boxing you will never forget, what are they?
Please add all yours too, no doubt the memories will come flooding back to us all!
One of my most vivid memories of boxing that sticks in miy mind was when was fifteen years ago when Nigel Benn fought Gerald McClellan.
It was almost over within the first few minutes and the ref was kind to Benn
Benn took a savage beating that night, but gave one out too..unforgettable stuff.
I know many people will have their opinions and memories too, but who can deny what we all saw that night was bravery above and beyond anything you could describe.

I remember listening to commentator Max Kellerman calling for referee Arthur Mercante Jr. to halt the fight between George Khalid Jones and Beethaven Scottland on the U.S.S. Intrepid in New York on June 26, 2001. As early as the fourth round, he said Scottland was taking “a brutal beating.” During the fifth round Scottland absorbed more than twenty consecutive punches to his head while trapped in a corner. “That’s it!” Kellerman shouted. “This is how guys get seriously hurt.” Then, during the seventh round, Kellerman told the ESPN television audience, “I don’t like the way he is getting hit…. Those are the cumulative punches that lead to things that you don’t want to hear about after the fight.” After that round, Kellerman said, “If you’re in Scottland’s corner you have to ask yourself, ‘Is it worth it, for the damage he is sustaining? Is it worth it for the kid’s life to stay in these final rounds?’ I would say no.” After Scottland finally collapsed with forty-five seconds remaining in the fight, Max Kellerman told the television audience, “I feel nauseated. I feel sick. Why does this ever have to happen?”
To watch this unravel in plain sight was nothing short of horrific. I remember at the time that I was up and screaming at the television set, “stop it, stop it for Christ Sakes!” There was nothing I could do; I was helpless. It was awful because I knew what was happening in there as much as Max did. What happened to Kid Paret happened with lightening speed and was almost mesmerizing. This was different; this was slow.

benn – mccellen is one night ill never forget for sure but wish i could forget. still angers me how many rabbit punches and head butts benn got away with in that fight.
frankie randall vs. chavez 1. what a night.that was. a good card as per usual back then for the showtime ppvs. 18-1 underdog randall beat the stuffing out of chavez the whole fight, completely schooled him and out fought him when he decided to trade. Then came the finishing touches in the 11th when the perfect 1-2 combo dumped chavez on his miserable ass. chavez fought dirty the whole fight, got docked 2 points for low blows, the judges tried their darndest rob frankie that night but frank got the split nod. they succeeded in robbery in the rematch though but thats a different story.
one other is prince charles williams vs. merqui sosa. i remember watching with my mouth open at the carnage i was watching. 2 guys just beating the piss out of each other and neither one backing down for a split second. still the only fight ive ever seen that was stopped by the ref between rounds out of fear of both fighters getting hurt more. i saw the rematch live at the philly convention center, it was just as brutal but wasn’t the same as the original.

I will never, ever forget the look on Dave Tiberi’s face when the decision was announced that he had lost to James Toney in their fight for the IBF Middleweight Title in Atlantic City on February 8, 1992. The scoring went like this:Judge Frank Brunette: 117-111, Judge William Lerch: 112-115, Judge Frank Garza: 112-115. A point was deducted from Tiberi for a low blow in round 6. Judge Brunette was the only one in the house not asleep that night. Tiberi smothered Toney against the ropes and kicked his butt throughout the fight. The utter disbelief which swept through the Taj Mahal that evening reverberated throughout the boxing world. The decision prompted an investigation into unjust decisions in boxing. Ultimately, this investigation, aided by Tiberi, led to the Boxing Safety Act in 1997. Because of the values, dignity and principals of Dave Tiberi, boxing is a much better sport today. Indeed, he retired after that fight in total disgust.
There is far more to this story and it warrants separate and in-depth treatment to even begin to give it its due. Suffice it to say the look of disgust and the look of astonishment on Dave and James’ faces, respectively, said it all. Plain and simple, it broke the spirit of a decent man of faith who had worked hard his entire adult life to achieve the pinnacle of his profession. I’ll never forget it as one one of the most shameful moments in boxing history.

My wife and I were at the Hall during the weekend of one of the Gatti-Ward fights and since the Turning Stone Hotel in Verona did not have cable, we checked into another, albeit sleezy motel in Oneida so we could view the fight. Hell, I was more that willing to pay for both rooms for the same night. But what really stayed with me was how all the boxing luminaries were also scrambling to watch the fight. The hell with the banquet; this was far more compelling. On that night they were all fight junkies just like the rest of us….Michael Spinks, Camacho, Hopkins, Frazier…..they all wanted to see these two guys go to war. No egos in play here…just plain interest. Some of these guys were asking me if they could come over to the motel room to watch the fight. It was fascinating…..and unforgettable.

Wow!
Pity the fool wanting to crash that party.
"Anytime you go thirty rounds with a guy, try to kill each other, and have the utmost respect for each other, no one understands that, but guys who have been to war understand it." - Micky Ward on Arturo Gatti.
The "Fan Man," James Miller, landed during the 1993 heavyweight fight
between Riddick Bowe and Evander Holyfield. When the lines of his paraglide
tangled, he hit the canvas, and one of his legs got caught in the top rope of the
ring. Fans dragged him down and gave him a beating. After his release from the
hospital, he was charged with dangerous flying and released on bail. As it turned
out, he was the only one who got knocked out, as Holyfield beat Bowe by a
majority descision.
In 1997, Oliver McCall suffered an emotional breakdown in his heavyweight
title fight with Lennox Lewis. This was altogether a chilling memory, but not
altogether unexpected.
Also in 1997, Mike Tyson was disqualified for twice biting Holyfield’s ears,
claiming he was retaliating because of head butting by Holyfield.
Now each of these incidents is a notable entry in my memory bank, but what
truly makes them memorable is that each was held in Las Vegas, each was for a
heavyweight title, and each was refereed by Mills Lane.

Buster ko-ing Tyson
A bunch of us cruised up to a pub in the Adelaide hills, missed the first 4 rounds but stood slackjawed, watching Tyson get beat up and knocked out by Buster Douglas. Never thought I’d see anyone do it. Cruised home in disbelief.

Benn Eubank 2
My best mate only went and got married on the night of the rematch between Benn&Eubank.
The reception was held in a hotel somewhere with no TV screens (no plasmas or LCD back then!!)
I found the janitor and bought him a few beers, next thing we were in his lock up watching the fight on a black and white portable TV, Word got out where I was and within minutes there wasn’t a bloke left on the dance floor, we were all crammed into this tiny room.
I seem to remember being about as popular as a fart in an astronaut suit with some of the other wives there…
Memories eh!
Mayweather v Hatton.
I went over to Vegas(first time)with a few mates.Disapointingly,hard as we tried,we could not get even one ticket,even though we had all been online trying(Ticketmaster),on different PC’s the very minute they went on sale.
Great atmosphere though with 30,000 Brits travelling over.We watched it in the MGM ballroom down the hall on 5 massive screens with about 5000 others.
Obviously it couldn’t make up for not being in the arena but it was a pretty damn good substutute.
I never want to hear ’There’s Only One Ricky Hatton’ ever again though :).
Next time i’ll go to see someone a bit less popular.
Yeah
i like Vegas.I reckon i will be heading back there more than once(when we get out of this bloody recession!)
I bet the Barrera v Morales fights in particular were great Phill.
Them’s the types of fights i’ll be going to in the future.Quality fights which you stand a chance of getting tickets to.
I have been to see Hatton in Manchester at the M.E.N but have yet to be to a live Vegas fight in the arena.
I will probably go through an agent next time as they and the casino’s seem to get most of the tickets.
I do like watching on tv though.It’s all about the atmosphere at a live fight isn’t it,unless you are ringside.Then you probably have the best of both.
The Wedding Wrecker
Lmao Phil – are they still together ?
Calzaghe – Lacy after all the prefight predictions
Quite a few of Benn’s fights
Leonard Hearns I
Lennox Lewis – Razor Ruddock
Tyson – Spinks where I bet on Spinks, told everyone I knew Boxing and Spinks would win and then stayed up all night for about 90 seconds of action. Mind you I did mind staying in bed the next day to avoid all those I’d been telling that Spinks would win !
OUUCH!!
Yeah, Calz Lacy. Someone on here was asking for top tunes for ring entrances, well Calzaghe came in to “smack my my bitch up” that night…….. perfect!!
Are you a Nathan Clevely fan then Phill?I honestly think he has the potential to rival Calzaghe’s achievements,though probably not the 46-0 record :).
Clevely
That high praise / expectations ! He’s good alright – think he’s now in the Ring Top 10 – so should make some headway over the next couple of years if he keeps on winning.
Oh yeah.Him and Kell Brook are my top prospects.Brook hasn’t had his chin tested yet though or been put under real pressure so i think Clev is slightly ahead the moment.
Brook is definitely talented but i think Clev could have more character and be a better all-rounder.He seems to be improving with every fight.
I have heard some stuff about Brook piling weight on between fights and his commitment has been questioned in the past.Hopefully thats behind him now and he will live up to his potential.I am expecting a big performance from him next w/end.
Cleverly is pretty much a sure thing for me.
Yeah i saw it.He mis-timed the count didn’t he but it looked like he would have probly got stopped anyway.Yeah,i like Oakey-Cokey.
Lad from the amateur club i used to train at is fighting for British Super Feather title on Sky tonight – Gary Sykes.
I was gonna go over to Hudds to watch it but gonna watch it on Sky instead.
He’s pretty good at domestic level.Was in a good eliminator fight with Anthony Crolla last year to get this shot.
He fought for England with Amir Khan in the amateurs,at the weight below Khan.
Hopefully he will bring our town our first British title home!
Soooo many
Hagler v Hearns;
Ali’s KO of George Foreman;
SRL over Hearns;
Tyson walloped by Buster Douglas;
Tyson’s ear-munch of Holyfield;
Calzaghe’s schooling of Jeff Lacy;
MacGuigan over Pedroza;
Eubank over Benn;
Watson over Benn;
Hearns KO of Duran;
Dave McCauley over Matjala.
I want a bigger juke-box.
Randy, Bonjour.
The McGuigan/Pedroza fight, wasnt that the one where the commentator (‘Arry, I think) says something like..“if only McGuigan could just land one big punch”……. and he does and decks Pedroza, cos if it was, I nearly included that one. Just couldn’t remember if I had the right fight.
I don't remember, sorry!
Barry was getting to him anyway and he might not have needed that KD to win. As usual, Carpenter was bleating like a girl watching a paricularly savage netball match. He had no business commentating on boxing. Rawling’s no better IMO.

Harry
I’ll always give Harry some credit for the way he carried on the postfight once the bottles and missiles started flying around after the Minter – Hagler fight
Hagler was awesome that night.
Minter wasn’t a bad fighter and had beaten Antuofermo for the title. Hagler was murderously accurate and hard-punching. From the first round I knew he was another class altogether. Hard as nails.

For me it has to be
Hatton’s brutal first round beating at the hands of Pacquiao. That fight was a thrilling and excellent display of one of the greatest fighters of all time absolutely destroying the apparently very tough challenger. The second round was pretty damn good too!

Gatti-Ward. Twice them boys had me scrambling to watch them. The first fight i knew was going to be a problem to watch all. At that time I was working security for the Macy’s distribution center in Lincoln Heights. Grave yard shift. I went in at midnight. I rarely work the weekends. But that weekend I did. I had the front desk and all the cameras to monitor. During the weekend the place is literally empty. Just you and another guard who’s posted in the other side. I knew the guy I was relieving that night Joe had a wife who didn’t drive. She got out of work at 11:45. So i knew he had to rush out as soon as I got there to pick her up. I never been much of a Ward fan. But I knew his rep. Tough muthafukka. With Boxing After Dark starting at 10:45 I knew the chances of watching the whole fight were non existence. So I’m getting dress and the fight is going like I expected. Gatti taking the first couple of rounds pretty easy. Ok. I won’t miss much if the fight continues the same. It’s already 11:35. But than Ward increases the pressure and Gatti goes into Gatti mode. And I’m like “damn” I can’t leave yet. Fights to damn good. The time has hit 12. The 8th round has just finished with Ward hurting Gatti badly to the body. He floors him to start the 9th. Gaiit looked done. So I call Joe and told him I’m at the gas station up the street putting gas. Just about there. Ward is close to finishing Gatti. Gatti starts his comeback and Emmanuel Stewart and Jim Lampley are going crazy. Joe asks what’s all that noise? I’m like it’s nothing. 2 guys acting stupid about to fight I think. I get to work around 12:30. Joe is like what happened? Did they fight? I was like hell yeah. One of the best fights I ever seen. Joe looks at me weird and leaves. 2 days later I see Joe at work. I’m like what’s up? How’s the wife? He’s like not to good. She got robbed Saturday night waiting for me. Joking he tells me “it’s your fault for being late”. I’m like nah. Blame Frank Cappuccino. He should of stopped the fight in the 9th. Than i wouldn’t of been that late.

I'd Agree
with many of the above.
Gatti v Ward Trilogy.
Holyfield v Bowe.(probably the fights that really sparked my interest in boxing).
Tyson v Holyfield 1+2.
Hopkins v Pavlik.
Hatton v Tszyu.(wanted to go but couldn’t get tickets).
Rumble In The Jungle.(though i wasn’t born when it happened).
Mike Tyson v Trevor Berbick.(first fight i remember watching live on tv).
You missed The Rumble???

The ref was kind to Benn?? Exactly how?
I know some Yankee cousins like to bleat about so-called rabbit punches from Benn but now we have the ref aiding him? The fight was a damn’ hard and well-fought, mostly clean rumble that McClellan was supposed to win easily. Darn, it didn’t work out that way. Benn outfought and out-gutted the G-man. And it ended in tragedy. Great fight. No apologies.

Randy
I don’t mean the rabbit punches.. Benn was almost helped back in the ring by the commentary guys and the ref! Some refs would have stopped it there and then. He gave him a chance where some wouldn’t. That said, you could say that stopping the fight earlier thus saving Benn from that huge shot at the start of the seventh (I think) would have also been kind!

Hmmm
Okay, maybe, on some techicallity, the fight could have been stopped in the G-man’s favour on the occasions you mention but, when you view the fight overall, Benn was never out and he gave McClellan the fight of his life and forced him to quit. I know the outcome and it was truly tragic and ghastly and it was obvious from even earlier than the last that McClellan was broken but it was a fight that Benn deserved to win IMO. He earned my total respect during that fight. Mclellan too for that matter. He had gone past the first round how few times? It was a great, great fight. Tragic but great.

I am a huge fan of Benn, I’m glad it wasn’t stopped (even though a first rd loss for Benn is nothing compared to the tragedy that would unfold). It was a mesmerising fight from start to finish.

The fight which actually stuck in my memory the most:
Was a fight I never saw but only heard talked about on the wireless – showing my age – was Patterson against Johanson (spelling?) and then the two against Liston. From the latter I thought that Liston was superman personified and was gutted when my (later) idol, Ali/Clay, unbelievably at the time gave him a hiding! That was truly astonishing at the time.

Once, while visiting the Hall of Fame, Johnny Tapia was busy signing autographs in the Museum when his publicist said, “Come on, Johhny, we’ll be late for the plane.” Johnny apologized to the other people who were waiting and then started to leave. All of a sudden, he spotted this young fellow in a wheel chair who wanted his photo taken with him. When Johhny went over to accommodate him, his publicist got shrill and said “dammit, we will miss our plane.” Johhny’s reply was “beep the plane. First things first.” I’ll never forget the look on that young fellow’s face. For that moment in time, he was the most important person alive. Wow!

Mondo Bizarro in DC -April 27,2007
I had recently interviewed former champ Mike Anchondo for an on-line boxing
site and was rooting for him against Darling Jimenez when they squared off in
Washington on April 27, 2007. Jimenez proved too fast and tough for Mike and
took him out with a devastating KO in the ESPN main event. The affable Mike
crashed to the deck face-first unconscious and was counted out by referee Joseph
Cooper at 2:05 of the third round. It was painful to witness but what was far
worse was that he was left on his stomach in a prone position and unattended for
about 30 seconds before he received medical attention. That was ugly and inexcusable.
In keeping with the bizarre events taking place that night, there was the issue
of the timekeeper. After Mike had been decked for the first time and Jimenez was
poised for the kill, the bell rang cheating Jimenez out of one full minute.
I also noted that the referee was wearing no gloves in the co-feature. Then, in
an under card, a fighter suffered a cut around the eye and the doctor in charge
checked out the cut from several feet away. "Is that incompetence or something
else?" Teddy Atlas asked during the televised fight

Just noticed your fan post Phil - here's my late contibution
The fights that will always stick with me – Benn / McCellen , Hatton/ Kostya , Watson / Eubank , Calzaghe /Lacy , Gatti/ Ward 1 , Tyson/ Douglas , Tyson /Bruno 1, Roy Jones / Vinney Paz , Roy Jones / Bhop 1 , Marco B/ Morales 1 , Marco B. / Hamed ( a personal joy )
Other things – Terry Marsh (allegedly) shooting wank Warren then getting away with it (but he didn’t do anything anyway , cough ) , Fan Man crashing the party , Tyson / Lewis press call punch up , any of Tyson’s mad , mad interviews , Don King waving flags and praising Benn in front of camera while his fighter (Gerald) lapses in coma (like the first class c**t King is ) Nigel "they only brought hin over here to bash me up " rant after the same fight – unknowing how much this fightt would haunt him and change him . Finally the Naz Hamed interview after Marco took him to school . From big mouth , egotisical , arrogant( beyond even Mayweather) champion to humilliated schoolboy – fking great . God I’d forgotten how much I hated Naz . Biggest wanker the sport has produced in my view .
A 20 stone Larry Holmes turning into superman and bounding over a car in a nightclub car park to brawl with Berbick was also a classic . Theres so much more but my fingers hurt now ……..nice one

I didn’t know about the Holmes/Berbick incident.
Totally agree about Naz ,LOL!
Roy v Paz was a great performance from Roy and a very painful looking one for Paz..
Paz was a blown up little guy but even so,i don’t think he won hardly a second of any round,from what i remember.
thanks matt

Enjoy .
That Burbick was mad as a brush .
Axe in the head dead was not a surprise ending to his story .

“A 20 stone Larry Holmes turning into superman and bounding over a car in a nightclub car park to brawl with Berbick was also a classic " gOOD ONE.

Sven f***ing Ottke / Robin Reid also sticks . I bet a small fortune Ried would expose Doctor Feather Fists . The ref . should of been shot and would of been if I’d been in Germany that night with a gun .
I will never forget the ref. docking a point from Reid for punching Sven in the face ! I will never forget my can of larger bouncing off my mates tv either .
Bastards .
I still have a big problem with Ottke – even now .

After the Reid fight no one was going to go to da farterland to fight him thats for sure .

Phil – Yes Paz broke his neck in a car crash I think- I remember watching him bench press with that scaffold on . Much was made of his toughness at the time . My mate ( a part time boxing fan) bet me a whack that Vinney would do Jones. I knew what would happen though. It was a slaughter . There was a round when Vinney failed to hit Roy once .
I liked Paz . Even when it got stopped he was telling the ref. " I’m OK " – He was not ok .

I was like a kid in a sweet shop!
Me n the missus were taliking to Richie Woodall and we spotted Roy Jones and got our pics taken with both of them. Me being a bit stupid was dying to walk up to Roy and ask him to … take a picture of me n the wife with Richie, but I thought that type of humour might have been lost on him. What do you reckon!!
I went to Cambridge United vs Sheffield Wednesday back in the day.....
Back when Wednesday were a Premiership team. They had Di Canio and Carbone on the field, and Carbone (I think) came off injured early. Then Di Canio got subbed late on, if I remember right. It may have been the other way round. Anyhow, Earl Barrett, (England left-back, no less….) was warming up in front of me, and I was right on the front row…..
So I call over Barrett, and wave my ticket at him with a pen….
He comes over, all smiles, and says, “Want me to sign your ticket for you, little man?”
I reply, “No, but you can take it to Di Canio, if you want, and get me his autograph…..”
He wasn’t best pleased…. but telling me to go fuck myself wasn’t very nice of him anyway….. lol
Some people are acting like Pacquiao should be expected to have just gone, "Yeah sure, let’s do something I’ve never done before because your dad made some dumbass baseless comment."

I found this;
It’s a youtube video of the match in question.
No sight of me getting told in no uncertain terms the depths of Earl Barrett’s disenchantment…..

Chaos,
They sound like scenes from Dennis Pennis from a few moons back.. Nice one!

I think I missed the Dennis Pennis thing.
Was he the ginger fella who did fake interviews? Sort of like a more conformist yet also much funnier Ali G?
I seem to remember something where he called Tom Cruise over at an awards do, and squirted him with ink or something?

here's one of my favorite moments
in a completely inconsequential fight jose hernandez threw down with jason litzao on HBO’s Boxing After Dark series. I hadn’t been into boxing for too long, and i wanted to watch as much boxing as possible so i tuned in to this fight. jason litzao was described by max to completely ignore defense, and boy did that end up being right on the spot. in between the rounds in the litzao corner the trainer was yelling, “YOU’RE ON FUCKING HBO, NOW LET’S GO DO THIS”. in the round right after that litzao proceeds to get KTFO by the little mexican dude. that was so goddamned hilarious, that i’ll never forget it

I can't remember who was in it...
But there was a fight on HBO, I’ll say between Fighter X and Fighter Y. At some point in the fight X hits Y in the nuts. The ref sees it, and calls time for Y to recover. Once he’s ready, he’s pissed and retaliates with not one, but TWO shots to the balls of X. X, of course, falls to the ground in pain. The ref either didn’t see the two obvious nut shots, or was just blind, starts to count and X does not get up, and Y wins.
The interview with Larry Merchant went something like this:
Larry: You were behind on all of the scorecards
Y: I wasn’t behind
Larry: All of the score cards had you behind
Y: I wasn’t behind
Larry: Ok, you weren’t behind
….
Then Larry asks him to go through the “KO”.
Y: (speaking of the two blatant nut shots being replayed) There’s a body shot. And there’s another body shot.
I was lauging my ass off. Best fight ever.
That sounds brilliant!! :)
If you can remember who that was, I’d love to watch that. Any clues?

That's it!
Here’s a better summary of what happened. Apparently even more crazy shit happened then I rememberd. I could of sworn that Larry told Gainer he was behind on the cards, but the link shows that he was ahead. This was about 10 years ago so my memory is a bit fuzzy on it. Still, a hilarious fight nonetheless.
Speaking of Larry M.
Anyone see him interviewing Zaragosa, and a fan hijacks the interview, Merchant starts to hit the opposing fan.. !! Unreal.

Smith - Dobson
Meant to ask you earlier Phil – did you catch the Smith – Dobson bloodfest last Friday ? Good fight – though I’m not too sure how much further Smith can go.
Alrite Bristol
Yep, I saw it. Thought that the cuts would stop that as soon as they happened (or pretty soon)… But, Mick Williamson, say no more. I thought Smith actually looked in better nick at the end too. I remember his last fight v Quigly was an untidy/scrappy kind of affair as well. So, no, I don’t know how far he’ll go either, he’s not in the same catagory as previous British MW champs ie Benn Eubank Collins, can’t see them having such a tough fight. Who knows?
