Almost boxing related

But Sky Sports boxing announcer Ian Darke is one of the play-by-play announcers for the FIFA World Cup on ESPN. He’s awesome on soccer like he is on boxing. And Darke will also call Pacquiao/Clottey next week for Sky in Arlington.

I’ve seen just a little footage of him on YouTube. He seems exciting but the guys he was fighting were generally awful, except Gary St. Clair, who mostly just didn’t engage him.

Hard to tell. He’s got an OK KO rate but again, those guys sucked. He didn’t look particularly powerful, but he’s certainly not feather-fisted.

He could surely KO Angulo.

10-9 Alexander

Alexander-Urango R1

Devon with three jabs and a right hook to start. Urango with a right hook. Alexander snapping the jab. Alexander with a right uppercut. Urango rushing in, not finding anything. There are 11 people starting an “ole” chant for Urango. Or because they’re drunk.

Alexander pretty easily outboxing Urango for the first two minutes. Exactly how you’d expect this first round to look. Chopping left from Alexander. Urango has his own plan going, though. I mean we know he’s not outboxing anyone. He’s just trying to lull Alexander a bit, it seems. Urango lands a good right hook.

Alexander-Urango R2

Every time DKP has those vertical DONKING turnbuckles for a fight I read it as one word. Then I get “Put a Donk On It” stuck in my head.

First half of the round is more of the same. Alexander is a loud guy. He grunted on a feint. That’s dedication to keeping your grunts believable. Urango is really, really slow. (In other news, he’s Colombian.)

Good right uppercut again by Alexander snaps Urango’s head back. Really pretty punch. Urango is going to have to hope that Brick’s concerns about Alexander’s stamina are well-founded. He doesn’t look like he has much of a shot otherwise.

Right hand lands hard again for Alexander. And another right hand counter stings Urango. When Devon flashes his speed he’s really impressive.

But now Urango is starting to find some success in the latter half of the round. Closest round of the fight so far, but I still go with Devon. Urango did get some shots in late in the round.

Now Kevin Cunningham is going to scream at Devon Alexander and talk like Nelly.

Exactly the fight I expected. I’m finding it difficult to find much to say. Alexander is whipping his ass because he’s much better than him. There’s the chance that Urango finds him and stops him, but that’s all that Urango has. He’s hitting Urango clean a lot, Urango not getting a ton back. And his pressure really isn’t much. Alexander has easily neutralized everything Urango does well. Urango is landing his hook here and there, but never too flush, and for the most part it’s been a hand-speed and boxing display from Devon Alexander.

Urango trying to pressure a bit more, and he’s swinging plenty. Now the pressure might be getting to Devon just a hair. Alexander throwing back and landing, though, so while Urango might be getting the rises out of the crowd, it’s Devon winning what Lennox Lewis is calling “an exciting fight.” But then Lennox Lewis said Andre Dirrell was like Muhammad Ali against Curtis Stevens so whatever.

Urango starting to really let his hands go when they get close, and putting in more effort this round than he really ever does. Alexander might need to switch it up just a little bit, but he’s still pitching a shutout I think.

Harold’s got a frog in his throat. OKBOB!

Aw fuck, Lennox used the frog in his throat line too.

This is starting to get more interesting. Urango is landing, but then there’s a huge counter shot from Devon, and most of the round is Devon picking and pecking at him. To get rounds in his favor, Urango has to rely on judges being impressed mostly by his pressure. He’s really not landing clean very much at all. But he’s getting more and more good shots in, including a right to the body there. And Alexander is more picking and pecking than the beating he was putting on Urango earlier in the bout.

Honestly, you could have this 4-3 for Devon right now and it’s totally understandable. 3rd, 6th and this round are all arguable for Urango.

Darchinyan-Guerrero Rd 1

Both guys come out a bit tentative to start the fight. Guerrero looks like a boxer and not a brawler, but he looks like the smaller guy in the ring. Darchinyan walking forward behind his jab, doesn’t really get anywhere with it. Guerrero lands a couple of big lead right hands. Darchinyan is backed up into the ropes and the two guys are just brawling now. Both guys clip each other pretty good at the end of that exchange.

Darchinyan still moving forward behind the jab. Guerrero with a couple of 1-2 combinations. Guerrero really showing no fear, and he’s leaving his chin a little too wide open for his own good. Darchinyan comes forward with a couple of straight lefts that land, and Guerrero counters with a left hook of his own. Darchinyan takes the round narrowly, but Guerrero actually made quite a good showing that round.

Guerrero with a nice counter after Vic lands another lead left combo. Guerrero comes forward behind a combo, but misses pretty badly with all of it.

Vic finding the range with the jab now and landing it pretty much at will. Guerrero is trying to stay in punching range. Guerrero with a couple of big, digging body shots to Vic. Vic with a couple more big lead lefts to close out the round.

Vic with a huge left hook that pushes back Guerrero. Twice in a row Vic lands a good lead left, and Guerrero lands a nice counter in return. The two circle quite a bit and do some posing.

Guerrero with a good left hook to the body. Vic just being a lot more aggressive than Guerrero right now, though Guerrero’s landing a lot of what he’s throwing. Now he badly misses a left uppercut. Vic badly misses a big straight left. Vic is “crabbing” a lot less in this fight than he has recently, and isn’t really telegraphing his punches so much. Both guys land jabs at the same time, but Vic’s has a lot more pop behind it. Guerrero seems to be tuckering out a bit.

Guerrero with a nice 1-2 combo. He slips a right hook from Vic and lands a couple of nice body shots. Vic with a wild right hook that connects on Guerrero’s chin, and Guerrero fires back two punches to the body. Vic starting to telegraph his punches a bit more, and lining up lots of shots to the body.

guerrero with a few jabs that fall short. Guerrero with a cut that’s caused by a punch. Guerrero is landing a lot of nice shots, but they’re not deterring Vic. Vic with about 6 punches in a row to Guerrero’s head which push him back. Neither guy can really miss right now – it seems like neither one is afraid of the other’s power, but to win these rounds, Guerrero needs to learn how to block Vic’s punches.

Vic looks like he’s almost toying with Guerrero now. Guerrero keeps coming forward, and occasionally Vic will fire off a big power shot that lands. Guerrero comes forward behind a max effort combination, but he’s just not having any effect, and Darchinyan is countering the hell out of him.

Guerrero’s corner should think about whether it’s time to stop this one. I’m not sure going any further gives him more positive than negative.

89-82 Darchinyan

well needless to say

However this turns out it was a way better fight than most of us expected. This kid can really fight.

I want to see him again

He’s just way too green to fight at this level yet, but he has talent.

Darchinyan-Guerrero Rd 10

Fernando Angulo has spent the last two rounds text messaging someone.

Darchinyan is fighting backwards, throwing a lot of jabs, while Guerrero keeps moving forward but Vic has been successful at keeping him at a distance. Guerrero can’t throw punches that have anything behind them anymore. Darchinyan making Guerrero eat jabs like Wimpy eats hamburgers.

Guerrero times Vic with a nice right hand at the end, but it’s just not enough, and Vic isn;t even really taking the fight seriously anymore.

Darchinyan 99-91

Darchinyan-Guerrero Rd 11

Guerrero comes forward witha couple of hooks and uppercuts, but Vic throws a few max effort shots, a couple of which land clean to Guerrero’s beard. Guerrero just doesn’t have the strength left to pull off the upset, and for that reason I really wouldn’t mind if the ref stopped the fight.

guerrero still keeps moving forward. Guerrero has switched southpaw again, and he’s done a decent job of switch hitting tonight. Vic with a straight left that clips Guerrero on the chin. Vic with another headbutt, but Guerrero comes out and tries to maul Vic at the end of that round.

Guerrero’s corner comes out to the middle of the ring to bitch out the ref.

Darchinyan 109-100

Vic-Rod Rd 12

guerrero coming out aggressively to start the round, and vic is wrestling him to keep him from getting into any kind of rhythm. Ref warns Vic for holding. Guerrero is literally putting every ounce of strength he has into this round. He’s coming forward, and he’s trying to throw hard combinations, but his muscles just aren’t letting him do it. the crowd is in a full throttle cheer behind Rodrigo now. A tremendous display of chin and heart by Guerrero, but just not enough skill quite yet to do what he’s needed to so. At this point, Guerrero is kind of measuring Darchinyan up, while Darchinyan is trying to throw a couple of 1-2 punches.

Darchinyan with 5 or 6 shots that connect straight on Guerrero’s jaw with about 20 seconds left. Guerrero makes it to the end, but one has to wonder if this is a Pyrrhic victory.

Not in terms of his chances of getting another TV spot on Showtime.
